You really glossed over the fact that even prior to all this conspiracy beliefs, Coleman was already a religious zealot who had some fairly odd beliefs. While he did not necessarily exhibit violent or even confrontational behavior, there were some telltale signs that he already had some deep seated issues, most notably magical thinking. The biggest red flag should have been Coleman basically declaring his daughter was going to be some sort of messiah. It seems like Coleman was already disconnected from reality, but because he kept up his outward image as "good Christian dad", people around him either dismissed or ignored some of these signs. This aspect is very similar to the Daybell case in that regard.

People can have troubled minds, mental health issues, having a low IQ, brain damages of what ever, but killing your own flesh and blood goes against everything we are as human beeings, it's in our DNA to protect our children no matter what, with our own lifes if required and without a second thought. This man did the opposite. Most people with mental disorders do not kill anyone. Something must have clicked in his brain. Those few you read about from time to time, killing their own children for samaritan reasons, if their children are severly ill, suffering very badly and so on, often kill their selves directly after.

The testimonials of the surf school students reminds me of the reactions of the people in a comic community I was a part of. A guy in it was sent to prison for possessing child porn. Members of the community reacted with words like "I had no idea" and "didn't see this coming" while I sat there remembering how I wrote a letter to the comic editor a few years prior about how one of the comics he drew was very awkward and icky and uncomfortable for me to read. It was just an opinion of mine but I'm not usually driven to share it. I felt like this comic author would be someone I would not want to get to know. I'm guessing the large Christian groups do not want to be blamed. But reporters need to ask them some hard questions. Matt was popular in church groups. Who else in his circle shared the same beliefs and are their children in danger?? It seems like there is a gag order in Santa Barbara. Zero news on their funerals. While it is more common to develop symptoms of schizophrenia in your teens/20s, late onset schizophrenia is not unheard of with about 20% of patients developing symptoms in their 40s. At least that's the percentage given by the NCBI-NIH, so not common but not out of the realm of possibility.

I think he's just delusional and got radicalized by conspiracy theorists, so nothing genetic like schizophrenia. Spectacular analysis, thank you Dr Grande for taking requests!! You never fail to make an incredibly logical analysis at things that are usually only discussed from a highly emotional point of view which tends to keep a lot of important information from being known. I think society really needs to take these conspiracy theories, and the people who believe in them, more seriously instead of just mocking them. I know several people who believe in conspiracy theories like these. They are all perfectly nice, law-abiding citizens. But so was this man, until he wasn't. Could you do a video about the relationship between conspiracy theories and mental health? I wonder whether exposure to conspiracy theories, especially ending up in a social media bubble with a lot of Qanon content, could be an environmental factor which contributes to a person developing paranoia, delusions, or psychosis. I wouldn't expect exposure to conspiracy theories alone to trigger a mental illness, but if a person already had a high level of environmental and genetic risk, intense exposure to conspiracy theories might also contribute. Another hypothesis might be that we know people in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia sometimes have an increased interest in religion. Maybe some people in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia might be drawn to conspiracy theories for similar reasons. So we might see a correlation between interest in conspiracy theories followed by onset of schizophrenia, but the causal link would be the other way around.
