You really glossed over the fact that even prior to all this conspiracy beliefs, Coleman was already a religious zealot who had some fairly odd beliefs. While he did not necessarily exhibit violent or even confrontational behavior, there were some telltale signs that he already had some deep seated issues, most notably magical thinking. The biggest red flag should have been Coleman basically declaring his daughter was going to be some sort of messiah. It seems like Coleman was already disconnected from reality, but because he kept up his outward image as "good Christian dad", people around him either dismissed or ignored some of these signs. This aspect is very similar to the Daybell case in that regard.

He brought it up and his thought on his daughter. Maybe his monotone made it seem he didn’t express its significance but he did. It’s up to you to take in his fact giving as important or not but it helps with not show bias by just saying the facts and not dissecting what’s more important as far as actions that predict behavior. He believes mindset & psychological disorders can be dangerous but we don’t have the power minority report type predictions based on psychology disorders

I grew up with Matt and he kept that stuff to himself and a close group of a few people. I was in Christian surfers with him in junior high and high school and would see him surfing in town once in a while until this. I never had a clue how warped his beliefs were. I mean, even if I did believe what he did I would have taken the family off grid somewhere before doing this. I never knew his wife but I don't think she was good for him.

It may have come on slowly and she was clearly concerned because she did call the cops. Then probably thought “ok he has some weird ideas, but mostly he’s normal” because weirdness sometimes takes either awhile to kick in, or it kicks in super fast. Meanwhile something in him suddenly snapped. Idk it’s really weird. Like this doesn’t seem to me like a Chris watts situation. That guy just wanted his family out of the way so he could get a new life. This guy snapped because the craziness just got too heavy.

@@JustDr.S Agree. This goes beyond any conspiracy theory or mental illness. People can have troubled minds, mental health issues, having a low IQ, brain damages of what ever, but killing your own flesh and blood goes against everything we are as human beeings, it's in our DNA to protect our children no matter what, with our own lifes if required and without a second thought. This man did the opposite. Most people with mental disorders do not kill anyone. Something must have clicked in his brain. Those few you read about from time to time, killing their own children for samaritan reasons, if their children are severly ill, suffering very badly and so on, often kill their selves directly after.

The testimonials of the surf school students reminds me of the reactions of the people in a comic community I was a part of. A guy in it was sent to prison for possessing child porn. Members of the community reacted with words like "I had no idea" and "didn't see this coming" while I sat there remembering how I wrote a letter to the comic editor a few years prior about how one of the comics he drew was very awkward and icky and uncomfortable for me to read. It was just an opinion of mine but I'm not usually driven to share it. I felt like this comic author would be someone I would not want to get to know. So hearing everyone say "I didn't see this coming" was baffling.

i have a friend who got deep into conspiracy theories a few years ago. they have mild-moderate psychotic symptoms. we had to stop talking because their speech was becoming so erratic and troublesome. i've tried reasoning with them on many occasions but they won't hear it. my worst fear is that something like this may happen one day. the one shred of hope i have is that the CTs don't completely consume their life, they have other outlets such as music and art. i don't know what i can do to help pull them out of this highly fortified web of self-reinforcing delusional beliefs; as you said, the delusions themselves block their willingness to be treated. i can only hope they find peace and don't hurt themself or others.

I have no dog in this fight, I live in a parliamentary, not presidential democracy, with over 60 political parties, of course, most of them are either small or strictly regional, but usually a government is made of some 3-6 parties and there is never a monopoly on power, thus people have to learn to negotiate and make deals, to get into power, to get to money and to make things done. Could you do a video about the relationship between conspiracy theories and mental health? I wonder whether exposure to conspiracy theories, especially ending up in a social media bubble with a lot of Qanon content, could be an environmental factor which contributes to a person developing paranoia, delusions, or psychosis. I wouldn't expect exposure to conspiracy theories alone to trigger a mental illness, but if a person already had a high level of environmental and genetic risk, intense exposure to conspiracy theories might also contribute. Another hypothesis might be that we know people in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia sometimes have an increased interest in religion. Maybe some people in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia might be drawn to conspiracy theories for similar reasons. So we might see a correlation between interest in conspiracy theories followed by onset of schizophrenia, but the causal link would be the other way around.

Whoa, that's insane! If you have any contact with his wife please tell her I am so, so sorry. I know what its like to lose a young child, not in this brutal, awful manner, but my heart hurts for her and her babies that were taken away from her💔

I wonder how many of the crazy comments and rants in comment sections and forums are actually mentally ill people that just have place to spew their insane beliefs

You don't have to be mentally ill to be indoctrinated by devious people. It's usually lonely people who feel isolated that are the easiest victims. So no, don't blame mental illness.

@@queermelancholy1562 You also have to be gullible and, frankly, pretty stupid to fall for the Q-Anon conspiracy in particular. As for a secret cabal of human beings that act to control society, well, that at least is plausible.

@@gregbors8364 look how many people believe in religions, this man himself was a fervent Christian religious (I pretend to be shocked 😲). Please explain to me where is the difference of believing in a supreme God, angels, demons, heaven, hell etc etc rather than believing in lizard men , extraterrestrial possessions, demonic secret societies and other crazy things like this? I will answer this question for you ... there is no difference! They both firmly believe in unreal things. The world is full of such naive and gullible people, take into consideration how many millions of religious believers there are in the world who believe any unreal nonsense that is told to them🤷

As soon as I saw the words “Alien Lizard People” and “Dr Grande” I knew I was in for a treat with more great deadpan one liners about lizards. You did not disappoint. But the story itself was so horrible. The poor mother. My heart breaks for her. She will always wonder if she missed something in his behavior. I look forward to the trial and the mental health workers assessments of him (both for prosecution and defence). Maybe you could do a follow up?

One thing that also stands out in this case is that they on FB and Instagram has the “picture perfect” life - those are often the worst. Look at Chris’s Watts.

This sounds very familiar to the Chad and Lori Vallow cases where they murdered family members, including two children thinking they were turning into zombies.
