It's basically Carthage (the gigantic horseshoe-shaped harbor, the general aesthetic of the place, the maritime focus, the name) meets Constantinople (gateway between East and West, "greatest city in the world" reputation, vestige of a once much larger civilization, the massive triple walls)

On the contray, i think its spot on. The Valyrians and the Ghiscari are known to be fierce rivals of one another, and its not really a secret that the Valyrians are an asoiaf embodiement of the Romans, in that retrospect its easy to come to the conlusion that the Ghiscari where inspired by the Carthagenians. Its historically accurate and it makes sense.
