Cube Logistics had recently acquired 6 new locomotives from Chinese maker CSR in 2015. In this rare move , a quartet of the new units, including class leader , QBX01 , depart the yard at Junee , in August 2016.

Awesome photography Gregg. Wonderful angles and the compression of long focal lengths without zooming is spot on 👍🏻

Thanks very much Lance! I learnt years ago that zoom shots are best done as static moves , in most cases anyway. Glad you enjoyed the clip. Cheers Gregg.

The bowed roofs remined me of class 80 and 85s. Those MTU engines max out at 1800rpm, the 12 and 16 cylinder versions are popular locomotive engines.

Hi Robin, The MTU's are not proving to be that reliable down here? At 1800 rpm , they are double that of EMD and General Electric prime movers that run at around 950 rpm., so work a lot harder. They don't seem to like the heat and compared to the UK and EU , we pull big trains under harsh conditions. MTU's are indeed good engines, but not suited to our rail environment it seems? Even Caterpillar failed to make a reliable locomotive engine ..which says something about the unique design of the EMD's and GE power plants? Thanks for watching. Gregg.

Very nice, I have heard they don’t age very well. It looked like a very long train. Reminds me of PSR here in North America. Hopefully it’s getting cooler down there. Summer is starting to get some traction here. Cheers from Terry in Nebraska.

Thanks Terry! Time will tell I guess? Not many options if you're after a new loco on a tight budget. Cheers Gregg.

I wonder why Australia imports locomotives from China. I thought Australia already had a manufacturing base for locomotives.

Back when these were built, QUBE were running a bit low on cash from using old Dinosaurs, So they had gone to CSR Ziyang for the one batch of these and never returned. Although plenty of Wagons at QUBE are imported from CRRC (CSR with a Fresh name), SCT Logistics on the other hand has two batches. Time will tell if they'll go for a third.

I suspect that China offered good financial terms as they try and get a foothold in the locomotive market. A question I have with the MTU diesel engines is the pricing of repair/replacement parts when they wear out or break. Both Cat and Cummins have tried and failed to break in to the North American locomotive market. Locomotives equipped with either engines struggle when it comes to repair parts and downtime. In the US Soo Line RR had 10 old locomotives repowered with Cat 3512 or 3516 diesel engine. When a problem occurred the locomotive had to be hauled dead to a side track alongside the local Cat dealer with repairs taking a week or more. They lasted until the time came for their complete overhaul. When the Chief Mechanical Officer got an estimate from the local Cat dealer, he broke out laughing. As each locomotive hit its engine hours, they were towed to the scrap yard.

In terms of horsepower what are they comparable to a American locomotive?
@johnleonard2202
@johnleonard2202 Жыл бұрын
New US locos tend to be in the 4000-4400hp range, so this is comparable. Tractive Effort however is only 520kN (120,000lbf) compared to 890kN (200,000lbf) for an ET44AC. A large part of this difference would be the weight - 134t (295,500lbs) for the QBX compared to 196t (432,000lbs) for the ET44AC.

They say they are 4250 HP , so comparable to a Dash8 or SD70 Mac. But seeing them on trains through the Adelaide Hills, I think they are down on traction compared to the US iron! Plus the "High speed" engine is working a lot harder than EMDor GE prime movers. Gregg 🙂

@@johnleonard2202 Yes John , weight is the key for sure! Though seeing these "rice burners" in the Hills, they seem to be working harder than the older US Iron? Time will tell I guess, but running at 1500 rpm compared to 900 , makes you wonder? Gregg.
