Quaife vs OBX Differential - Is OBX Any Good in 2023?

I bought a bootleg diff to see if it's worth running.
The OBX seems to be a complete replica of the Quaife ATB Helical LSD.

Great video. It goes to show you buy cheap you will buy twice. We have over 30 years experience manufacturing our ATB differentials and though our work with large OEM's such as Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Lotus etc we have proven our differentials for the life of the vehicles.

I have over 50k miles on my box of hard driving. Has done me well. Not to say your product isn’t better, just saying, sometimes cheaper can pan out. Just have to know what you’re doing. For instance the cheap washers pointed out in this video. Replace them, set proper pre load and this diff isn’t terrible for the money if someone can’t find another diff or afford it. I've been running and servicing Quaife diffs in 450-550 hp road race cars for nearly twenty years, and I can tell you for certain that OBX abortion is totally f*cked. I wouldn't even use it as a paperweight. The Quaife is an excellent product, however, and with a few parts will function just as well as intended. Good luck!

For the f35 case in my 9-5 the OBX lsd works well, but required clearancing in the case. If you compare the obx and quaife from a side profile, the obx has one less angled radial cut from the quaife. Ideally I would have adapted the lsd housing itself, but whatever :/

Is there an update yet? I'm looking at purchasing an MHP LSD that I suspect is a clone of the OBX that is a clone of an OBX which I can no longer find for my Nissan R200. After changing out the belleville washer and bolts, then cleaning up the burs, did it work?

It worked after cleaning it up, but it's not strong enough for 315 slicks like I run. Hard corner exits caused it to behave like an open diff. After a couple hundred laps the gears inside had messed up teeth. So I moved on to another option.

obx looks like a cheap copy of quaife. surely they dont know what they are doing. super bad machining i can see inside.

Just going off the finish: yes the obx is trash, but as a senior in mechanical engineering and a 4yr ase mechanic, it comes down to material, if the obx is a high quality chromoly steel, it will wear itself into a good unit, will just need frequent oil changes at first, for $300 vs $1500, something that performs like a top brand in lsd even if it doesn’t last as long could be the perfect option for a budget build ($2500 is350 for weekend warrior drag racing… why buy a quaife for the price?) a person able to replace a diff will have the knowledge and equipment to go in and take a file and emery cloth to the obx diff and put some good hardware in there and rest easy knowing they essentially saved 1200 in labor doing all the finishing and proper assembly themselves

OBX producing crappy headers, fine, whatever. But they have no business making precision machined parts.
