I had a supervisor who reminded me of Dietmar. I mean they could have been brothers! He was always coming on to me, which was illegal & he made me sick. I always thought "I do have principles" & never went any further. I am so glad i never gave in, as I could see thru his outside looks & his inside appearance was just as bad, even worse. Ich muss sagen: Sehr gut umgesetzt. Jede einzelne Szene hat mich gefesselt und gleichzeitig sehr zum Nachdenken bewegt. Ich selbst war auch schon in so einer ähnlichen Situation und kann die Gedanken und Gefühle von Jan voll und ganz nachvollziehen. Ich habe mich in meine Situation zurückversetzt gefühlt und habe während des Films diese noch einmal durchlebt. Schön ist es nicht! Und ich kann jedem, der über so ein "Angebot" nachdenkt nur raten, sehr, sehr vorsichtig und behutsam vorzugehen. Oder es lieber gleich sein zu lassen. Vor allem, wenn man sich nicht zu 100% sicher ist, dass man dies tun will. Ich selbst habe aus der Erfahrung meine Konsequenzen gezogen und weiß, dass das ein einmaliger Fehler war, den ich nie wiederholen werde. Aber nochmal ein ganz großes Lob an die gesamte Besetzung bzw. das Team.

Die Gründe, warum Jemand das macht, sind wohl verschieden; Aber wenn es aus so einer großen Not geschieht, ist es nicht gut. Es gibt welche, die machen solche Sachen sogar aus Spass oder verdienen sich als Student ein paar Euros dazu. Oder machen das, weil sie keine Lust auf Minijobs etc haben.

Thank you, queerblick; "Lonely Dietermar" is a very well done film. The lonelyness is the subject. And it can atacs any people in any era; like the misery or other sadness. But the humanity also knows ways to soften it.

The film is called "Lonely Dietmar" but most of the comments here are very judgemental and condemn Dietmar, whilst casting Jan as a victim. As well as the exploitation of youth, the film should also provoke questions about loneliness and the fact that being unattractive (and older?) too often means being cast aside as worthless. Older unattractive guys who are lonely may still yearn for intimacy, and perhaps paying is the only option. Depressing that so many see Dietmar as a baddie rather than a saddie.

Ein toller Film, vor allem in der Umsetzung. Der Ton ist super, vor allem die Musik und die Hintergrundgeräusche lassen den Film wie in der Realität wirken. Das Klischee vom dicken, etwas ungepflegten Mann hätte so nicht sein müssen.Ein schwieriges Thema, aber Top umgesetzt. Bravo für diesen leisen, aber guten Film!

There are two things that I got from this short flick: 1- In families/communities where young men (or women) are not safe to come out in the LGBTQIA+ community, so they put themselves at risk by finding that 'connection' in very unsafe and unemotional areas. 2- My personal thought that he left the money was that he wasn't there to be a Rent-Boy but rather out of his own desire and experimentation. He took what was available to either confirm or deny his sexuality. All of that stems from his mother and it's sad that there isn't more family counseling available in all areas.

Wow das sitzt tief! Ich bin bei sowas sehr empfindlich muss das erstmal gut verpacken jetzt. Vorab: Ein super tolles Lob an die komplette Besetzung. Auch den Mut sich selbst solche Rollen anzunehmen! So many young hustlers only feel worthy and validated by the desire of repulsive old or young men; the money is nice but secondary.

It was hardly like he was preying (certainly not praying). He offered and the youth decided to take the offer. Older white gay guys also aren't "always" pr[e]ying on younger guys sending them money. When it does happen it is for sex (I would have thought that was obvious though). It is called "the oldest profession" for a reason-it has gone on from time immemorial. Men with money often pay for sex that is simply a feature of our species.

Hi I Just recently re-discovered this short film and I have a question. Please no hate. I noticed Lonely Dietmar is the title but the POV is of Jan's. Any reason or any explanation for this?

Yes, because we wanted to balance both perspectives. Both can be seen as victims: A men who grew up in a time when being gay was a crime in Germany and who is lonely now instead of being married to another man. On the other hand there is Jan, who is also a victim, but who decides in the last minute to be none. By leaving the money, he restores his dignity.

@@queerblick I appreciate your response. That's wonderfully explained and appreciate that the film gives a balance to both. Pardon my ignorance as I didn't know there was a time that being gay was a crime in Germany. I am from the Philippines and I have often thought it was generally better there than in my country where gay men are seen as jesters, comic relief, as well as caregivers to aging parents. I Truly appreciate your response.

@headsetjockey4283 Thank you for your nice words. No worries, even younger and also elderly people in Germany do sometimes not know (for elderly because no one talked about it). But as a matter of fact, Hitler killed gay and bisexual men systematically. About 50.000 were killed in concentration and work camps. And after Hitler was dead, West Germany still has put gay and bisexual men into prison until 1994. In some year it was up to nearly 4000 men per year. It is a very sad, tragic, inhumane and shamefull part of German history.
