Learn a mind-body approach to treating anxiety in my FREE course Grounding Skills for Anxiety, Stress and PTSD: courses.therapyinanutshell.co...
An anxiety disorder diagnosis does not mean that you are defective, nor that it’s your fault, you’re not broken. The disorder is treatable. It doesn’t have to be permanent! Anxiety is a real and challenging condition where our physiology, our mind, and our experiences get caught up in a cycle of increasing worries and physical symptoms. But that cycle can be turned around with the right knowledge, skills and practice. It may be difficult to break the pattern on your own, but with the right support and resources you can overcome an anxiety disorder!
In this video learn 10 ways you can treat anxiety, decrease stress and become healthier and happier.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

I don't think I have anxiety but I have been struggling with insomnia, intrusive thoughts, and overthinking for a few months now. Your videos have been helping me so much in learning how to manage these thoughts, avoid an anxiety cycle, and take better care of myself. I haven't resolved these issues completely, but it has gotten a lot better since it started. Since my semester in uni is coming to a close and I'll be starting a new job soon, I know that having these tools will be extremely valuable in the days to come. Just wanted to extend a big thank you for making such organized, clear, and easy-to-follow videos on these topics

I disagree. Not saying that’s not a thing. My anxiety is from being social. Which would be fine since I don’t have friends. But I’ve started freezing in situations where I’m the center of attention. Like at work. If it’s someone I haven’t spoken to a lot and they ask me simple questions. I freeze. Stutter, start word vomiting as fast as I can. I went for an interview for a higher position and I completely shut down. Then after I think about it over and over about how I ruined that situation because I couldn’t just chill until it’s literally 3 days later and I’m still obsessing over it and worrying myself sick over it. I’ve always had a touch of anxiety, but it’s starting to spiral ruin my sleep, job, and who I am. Which is why I’m at this video now. If anyone knows any other good videos let me know. I’ve already gone to a doctor and they literally told me just to deal with it. In nicer words of course. Therapists cost too much in my area.

Love how bitesize this video is! Learning about our chimp brain is the most helpful thing to me. 🧠 When you have anxiety for many years it’s easy to forget some obvious and core support ideas, some other things that help me that you could try are - having a note page on your phone full of sayings and thought that you know soothes you. - ASMR videos - knowing you can’t thing positively whilst anxious, ‘it’s like trying to think positively whilst running from a tiger’ relax from the anxiety first then you can slowly start trying to feel positive.

How wonderful. Thank you for this beautiful session Emma. I found your knowledge and explanations so sensitive and soft and warm. When there is a willingness to connect with others, anxiety can be explored, with awareness in order to reduce it's impact. Patience, showing up and being kind to ourselves when we fall is like retraining the amygdala in the present moment. With awareness, this becomes our super power to being with the anxiety that comes and managing it better. Waving to you with love, Marie-Louise from Cornwall, UK ❤

I was raised in a extremely angry and confrontational family. I was always living in fear of what was coming next. It hasn't really gone away even with medication. I apologize to people even when I did nothing wrong. I have a therapist that is great but sometimes I feel like my issues are being dismissed. Our mom was great at making us feel like what we are feeling is not important. If your mom treats you like that it's going to stick with you the rest of your life.

Am half jealous of ppl who have supportive,loving and fun families 😅.I wouldnt have generalized anxiety disorder had my family shown some emotional support during the set backs I faced in my life.Just a visit ,a loving ph call would have helped me.I got judgement,criticism, invalidation till I got panic attacks but ofcourse no one understood even then.Now I rely on meds if its really bad and counsellors.I never expect emotional support from friends and family anymore.

You don't know how thankful I am for this. It's been a pretty rough week for me, I've been applying for jobs to help my family because they're struggling financially and everytime I get a call for an interview I either stare at my phone until it stops ringing, or hang up in the middle of the call because of my anxiety. As a result of this, I've been feeling very guilty and overwhelmed, and have not been sleeping or eating well. I know this isn't healthy and doesn't help me achieve what I'm pursuing (which is to endure the interviews in order to slowly teach my brain that it's safe to try these things), but your video has made me aware of all the tools available to me, and how taking one step at a time will help me more than trying it all at once. So, to anyone reading this: hang in there, be patient and gentle to yourself. You'll get through this.

I'm retired now, but I had to interview probably several hundred people as a former manager and I also had many interviews after being laid off later in my career. It's important to just be professional, be very prepared and organized, be yourself, relax, be positive, focus on what skills you can offer the company, and use the interview as a learning process. It's like doing sports. You just keep trying no matter what. And don't take a rejection personally. Not getting the job may be the best thing for your life in the long run. You are still a person of value whether you get the job or not.

And the key here is the everydayness of it. Do it especially on those good days. Some recommend to do one session in the morning and one in the night. You can search on KZbin with words mindfulness and depression. There's research on it that just like good therapy causes actual change in your brain, regular mindfulness meditation with or without added loving kindness meditation also causes slowly, with time, positive physical changes in your brain.

Thank you for this. I really needed a guide on how to deal with things happening all around me and this video literally uploaded just a few minutes ago. I have been avoiding the things I need to do and in the process makes me feel bad for not being responsible. I overthink and blame it on my circumstances as if I am the victim, that in effect makes me feel relieved and justified on doing things that increase my happiness yet not necessarily address the issues. I feel bad for procrastinating yet I feel no motivation on what to do about it and try to do something else, and my mind is exhausted as with my physical body, it manifests. Thank you for the videos, I honestly needed to hear that there is hope, even for someone like me, that I am not the only one feeling like this and I not suffer it alone or in silence. Dear Emma, you have helped me SO much with all your video’s!! I really got to understand more about how anxiety works, that I’m not broken was a really helpful thought and how avoidance makes things worse was an uncomfortable but very useful and stimulating insight. I walk every day with our lovely dog, I spend much time in nature, gardening etc. But since February, I picked up tapdancing too. And by now, I think I’ve made it to intermediate level, yeehah!! I can do some steps without holding on to a chair for dear life! 😂 But what it also literally does for me, it helps me develop fysical balance, because you NEED that if you want to tapdance and it is the most fun way to do that. Now, some weeks ago I could be scared to walk through my own home without clinging onto something. Since about a week or so, that sensationis completely over. I’m so happy!!!! And yes, I quit caffeine about 4 weeks ago. I still drink coffee, but the decaffeinated one. I feel like I’ve gotten my life back after so many years of struggle and I am forever grateful for you, helping me to understand myself and giving me the tools to know what to do and what not to do. I wish I could give you a big hug, but since that is impossible now, please accept my greatfulness. You are very lovable and clear about your messages for this world. ❤️

Monosodium Glutamate gave me anxiety until I realized it was triggering me. I was deficient in lysine and arginine (amino acids). Exercise and meditation absolutely help, but for me it's my diet that can knock me off 'center'. If I feed my body right, the other tricks like mindfulness and cognitive thinking are needed a LOT less. Meditation and mindfulness is basically good because it turns of the default-mode-network (the racing mind). New studies say that's also what happens in micro-dose therapy. It all comes down to the chemistry of your brain-soup.

Hi Emma, I just found your channel and have been binge watching your videos 😊 I actually have a request for a topic. (If you already have a video for this please let me know…I looked but didn’t see one.) My question/request: What happens to your body during fight-or-flight, and how can you calm yourself down to better handle the situation. For example, let’s say you’re caught in an active shooter situation; in order to survive you need to keep your wits to make smart decision and avoid danger. I’m terrified of this exact situation, have been avoiding all public places & have severe anxiety over this fear. Any advice/help on what to do in this situation would be extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment. Take care! 😁 -Chase

This is kind of a off topic question but I have a severe anxiety disorder and have most of my life. I’ve been to a lot of doctors and I’ve never been prescribed any actual anti anxiety medication. Is that normal? I have no history of drug use and I’ve been prescribed every SSRI imaginable and a few other ones and I’ve only gotten relief for a short time. I have frequent panic attacks and have since I was a child. I find it odd I’ve never been prescribed anything for panic attacks and I keep getting put on new medications with crazy side effects and nothing to help the panic. Ive tried to tell doctors I am not depressed and depression medication makes me feel crazy but they don’t listen

Regarding the first point... "See a doc' to rule out physical medical conditions." It's worth a mention that in Harvard Medical School (among others) they needed a way to initiate anxiety for psychological studies... AND they found that decreasing the general oxygen in the atmosphere of a room just a LITTLE bit, could do exactly that... on cue... consistently. It's also worth note that for about $10 (US) an Oxymeter (or combo' oxygen pulse meter) can be had, so you can CHECK anytime... If you feel anxious, just clip the thing on your finger and see what your blood O2 saturation is... If it's well below 98% or so, there might be an issue... and your heart rate is monitored in real time... SO you can even take notes about the "physical symptoms" of your anxiety episodes... Whether or not it's medically (physically) relevant or helpful, it can be helpful for your therapist to gauge just how severe your condition is... Hyperventilating and rapid heart rate can also contribute to inefficiencies at getting oxygen to the blood... so there is that... BUT there's also the case that it CAN demonstrate to the MD's that you have a real physical symptomology, and they may not be able to replicate it in the office... even to figure it out. Sometimes, doc's are dismissive, or at least SEEM dismissive, because they don't have all the information to study. It's harder to diagnose and treat "by long distance", so if you only deal with anxiety episodes at home in the quiet (regardless of why) they can't just psychically figure it out... AND there may be questions like "What were you doing just before this episode came on?" or "Did you eat/drink anything when this happened?"... It might only be helpful to a psych' professional, but I'd just rather have more than enough information than not nearly enough information... Anyways... It just seems like it might be worth checking out. ;o)

@FetDiB
@FetDiB Жыл бұрын
@@jenmarie2030 @Jen Marie oh so sorry I didn't check for your reply earlier. So what you do is if you have made an appointment with a psychiatrist and you're a woman you can ask what you can do to check for those probable causes. And the reason I said "if you're a woman" is because women tend to have anemia sometimes just constitutionally, meaning that's how their body works. For example they might be having a heavy flow period but they don't recognize it as heavy because that^s how it's been from the first years their period got regulated. So that's normal for them. And also most women's period is similar to their mother's. Meaning their mother also has too much blood on their periods and it also lasts for 7 days. Which mis normal but again if they don't take in enough red meat or quality vegan food that provides them with enough iron then they might be slightly anemic but they don't know it before it causes them extreme fatigue and mental fuzzıness or fog. Then the other thing about women is that they might be having a thyroid problem. And this again has to do with hereditary factors. Women do get their thyroid problems from their moms. This is not to say that the mother is the one to always passes on those conditions to their daughters but women who have a mother or a grandmother or an aunt from their mother's side that has dealt with thyroidal issues are more likely to have not the same but some kind of thyroidal issue in the future. So they need to know that these conditions might manifest for themselves too. But I only recommend to check about thyroıdal blood tests if they know about some elderly woman in their family that has been diagnosed and I don't recommend any type of imaging because if you look for it in imaging tests you are most likely to find a nodule or something that might be there as many people have but it's most likely that it won't manifest at that moment as a disease. Those echo patterns they don't serve you if your blood tests to be normal. So for the thyroid you don't need to do much but if you feel a lump in your throat when you touch the frontal area of your neck or you're not too thin but your Adam's apple is too obvious when you look from afar then you should go to an internalist and just say that you observed this and they will know what to do (just to claify: women don't have what is called Adam's apple. But I chose this terminology as that area is more likely to be understood by people who aren't familiar with anatomical terminology) If it's too obvious they will have it checked anyway because as doctors we are alert about the things we see on your bodies. So to summarize all, you should have your iron levels tested and you can ask for it from an internalist but for the thyroid functions you don't really need to do much because only if you have certain symptoms they're going to treat it. And believe me those symptoms really show themselves as extreme anger and axiety and agility and extreme sweating all together at once or if you have hypothyroidism you'll constantly feel and look very tired and sleepy and have very dry skin and hair again all at once. So you'll really will be able to tell you aren't well. I hope this has been a bit explanatory :)
@FetDiB
@FetDiB Жыл бұрын
And for the men I'd say typically men don't get anemia if they're young and healthy. So they don't really have to worry about it. They typically have anemia if they have a chronic disease which if it's manifested is going to be dealt anyway because blood parameters test chart is the first thing a doctor always order. And thyroid issues aren't that prevelant with men either. So only if they have really obvious symptoms doctors are going to investigate them by ordering hormone level tests and if it's needed imaging.
