Since quran is divided between Makkiyyah and Madaniyyah, we can easily divide the quran between: 1. What was copied or modified from the earliest Arabic Gospel of Christianity 2. What was the event told during Muhammad's life - e.g when he created a quranic verse to allow him to marry his adopted son's ex wife, the seven sleepers, etc.

Vellum and other materials were too valuable to leave too long unused, which is why palimpsests are so common: parchment was so hard to find that older manuscripts were scraped or bleached 'clean' and reused. The main issue is calibrating the radio-Carbon dating results from animal skins from the Arabian peninsula, which typically produce dates 50-100 years earlier than is really the case.

If the Qur'an wasn't canonised until the mid-7th to 8th Centuries, then it would be necessary to assume that parchments had been lying around for centuries. This is extremely unlikely.

What would be interesting would be to test how well the theorized dates of the earliest biblical manuscripts align with their radiocarbon dates as a comparison with Islamic manuscripts and their radiocarbon dates.

This issue on the carbon-dating of the manuscripts of the Qur'an is just a smokescreen to cover up the carbon-dating of the manuscripts of the Bible which are carbon-dated to the 9th century. This is the way of Jay Smith and his cohorts for face-saving inasmuch as they have nothing to boast about with regards to the carbon-dating of the manuscripts of the Bible. Since these manuscripts are carbon-dated to the 9th century, this would mean that the Bible was written two centuries after the Qur'an. This would mean that the Bible writers copied the stories in the Bible from the Qur'an. -03-09-24

Has any work been done on the non-Quranic fragments found with the Sanaa text? With such a major focus on the origins of the Quran, there could be gems of info found among the fragments. Anything from giving hints about how to translate certain words correctly to the historical information about the region. It seems to be much closer to Mecca than any other city.

Gents, despite being a keen supporter of your analysis into Islamic origins, I hate to be the one to point out to you that the lines on the graph (at 3:45) do NOT MATCH the scale on the axis. For instance, Sanaa B Lyon is supposed to represent 595-658CE, but the graph line only covers 500-550CE. The only one which seems to relate correctly to the axis is Sanaa A Lyon. Have I missed something or is the graph incorrect?

My running theory is that he got those verses from christians he met on his way to Syria during his caravans. The word quran itself is linked to 'qeeraana', the syriac word for 'to read'. He was probably inspired by ebionite manuscripts as well as infancy gospels.

Interesting. If they pre-date Mohammad's life then they are not of divine origin. The only conclusion I can draw is that these manuscripts were possibly used to teach the young Mohammad what he would later tell his followers. But their bishops maintained the name of their religion as Christianity since they are using Prophet jESUs (pbuh) as their god. It is for this reason that no Jew in Israel, a place where he came from, did not recognize him as some kind of a divine being. Thus, the Jews maintained their religion as Judaism. Hi Jay. This is al bm. Call me Sam. LYON's 388CE is correct. Refer Sura 18 verses 9 to 22. This is the story about the sleepers in the cave (Al Kahfi). Which is actually the Sleepers of Ephesus from the post biblical Christian narrative (3rd to 4th century CE). Here is Sura 18:22 "Some would say, "They were three; their dog being the fourth," while others would say, "Five; the sixth being their dog," as they guessed. Others said, "Seven," and the eighth was their dog. Say, "My Lord is the best knower of their number." Only a few knew the correct number. Therefore, do not argue with them; just go along with them. You need not consult anyone about this." The verse is addressed to 'Muhammad'. It is in the present tense. "Do not argue with them" refers the people of Ephesus who were arguing about the story of the boys in the cave (in Ephesus or whatever was the real location). Muhammad was there among them somewhere between the 3rd to 4th century CE, listening to their arguments about the seven sleepers of Ephesus. The sleepers of Ephesus occurred around 250CE to after 300CE though it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date. The location of the real Ephesus is also not known accurately. But if we refer the Quran (18:22 above) it must be an Arab speaking neighborhood. Please look up the Lakhmids and Ghassanids who were Arab speaking christians around Syria and northern Arabia who were embroiled in the "divinity of Jesus" controversies among early christians of the 3rd to 5th centuries CE. The Ghassanid Arab christians agreed with Rome about the divinity of Christ. The Lakhmid Arabs were Nestorian christians who rejected the divinity of christ. Muhammad was possibly a Lakhmid Nestorian christian. Hence the never ending repetition 'do not say Jesus was son of god' in the Quran. And which is repeated many times on the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem 'do not say Jesus was son of god'. Lyon carbon dating the Sanaa manuscript to the 4th century is correct.
