That boyfriend who "joked" about "losing" the key is a complete piece of garbage! My ex fiance did similar crap all the time after we had been together for a while and it took me having a mental breakdown and leaving for me to realize how bad things had gotten with him and that he was emotionally abusing me. I'm still recovering emotionally. I constantly second guess myself and apologize for things that aren't my fault. OP needs to get out of that situation immediately.

I don't know that I would call your mother an Ahole. I would just call her a thief! That she stole the money that had been designated as her children's college funds and then wasted it is reprehensible. I hope there is some way you can at least collect from her the $300 it took to clean your dress. Throwing wine on your dress? Really? What are you, Mom? Four? That is the sort of temper tantrum a CHILD might throw. I disagree with the people who say if you want to help your siblings with their college you should give the money directly to them. No, no, no, no, no, no, no! If you want to help them with their college send a check directly to their college. I think it would be much too easy for your mom to guilt them into giving that money to her if it passed into their hands then the money would be gone and they still wouldn't have their college paid for. If daughter is unhappy about her parents supplying their grandchild (who lives with them, and is being raised by them) with a college fund, the grandparents should demand that the daughter should be supplying the money for her own child. Since daughter is not, the grandparents have taken up the financial burden. It is the responsibility of the parent to financially support their child.

I might have played a joke on my gf with a house key like the one in the second story...except that I would have ended it in 2 or maybe 2.5 seconds. Just long enough to see her eyebrows to shoot up as she tried to remember the last time she saw the key, but before that shot of adrenaline caused the feeling of dread to wash over her. And that is how I, a born asshole who loves to mess with the people I love, and to be messed with by those people, explain the difference between a "joke" and "abuse": you don't gaslight somebody so long that you cause them genuine fear and anxiety. A bit of frustration or confusion is fine, that's the point of the joke, but the minute you see that genuine stress reaction coming on, you shut it all down and come clean. This is the only way to be able to honestly claim that a joke was just that and not intended to hurt; people have enough stress in their lives without so-called loved ones adding to that for no reason other than to satiate their own sadism. And that is what it is when someone keeps a "joke" going into the territory of genuine fear and stress.

Dad is NTA. He is just forcing his son to put his money where his mouth is. It's easy for young people to be very sanctimonious about how evil affluence is and to say that Dad ought to pay more taxes and the rich ought to give more to the poor, etc. etc. but when you say, "Okay, let's take some of YOUR money and give to the poor" you would think Dad was threatening to kill his puppy and it becomes panic time. But I don't think this should just be a threat on Dad's part. I think he should do it. He should seriously reduce the amount he had earmarked for entitled son's education and point out to him that many young people TOTALLY pay their own way through school (with no adverse effects) and he actually is quite lucky that he is only having to provide a portion of the expenses himself. Perhaps if he has to work he will not have time to hang out on the street corner with others of his ilk carrying nasty signs and screaming about the evils of capitalism. BTW, when I started college (admittedly about 347 years ago) my parents gave me all the money they could spare which was SEVEN DOLLARS! As I was being driven to the college by my older brother who was home from the Air Force he asked me how much money I had and I told him I had $7. He told me he didn't think that was enough (he always was a master at understatement) and he gave me a ten dollar bill so with $17 I started college. I got temporary loans from my college which had to be repaid by the end of the quarter in order for me to enroll for the following quarter and I got a job working 40 hours a week and with no additional financial help from ANYONE, four years later I walked out with my degree. If my parents had said, "Here. We're going to give you 75% or 50% or even 25% and you can provide the rest" I would have been ecstatic! They did not do that. They gave me ZERO dollars in the next four years to help with my college. Not because they were not willing to help but because they absolutely did NOT have the money! Looking back on it, I strongly suspect that when they gave me the initial $7 they skipped a trip to the grocery store that week. (That was back in the days when you could actually get a couple of brown paper bags full of groceries for around $5.00. I told you it was about 347 years ago.) So, Mom and Dad, in case I never said it at the time, Thank you so much for your sacrifice. One day I was walking down the hall in my dorm and a girl was sitting on the edge her bed crying. I went in and asked her what was wrong and she said that "Daddy had run out of money" and he would not be able to send her the next quarter so she would have to lay out that quarter and she was worried that all her friends would somehow be ahead of her when she started back in two or three quarters. It absolutely did not enter her mind to say to Daddy, "Hey, how about I work for the next couple of quarters to give you a bit of a break". Nope. If Daddy couldn't 100% pay for her college she would go home and pout and cry until he was able to do so again. Entering college as I had with a grand total of $17 provided by my parents (and my brother) I can't even tell you how disgusted I was by her and how much contempt I had for her. Please, Dad, stick to your guns. Doing so just might turn your sniveling little boy into an actual man! When I see all the people who say you are the A-hole it just reminds me of how much the concept of "tough love" seems to scare some people and they tend to equate it with child abuse! I do not see that what you propose is punitive in any way. You are simply saying to this "little boy" "Son, it's time to put your money where your mouth is." Again, stick to your guns. It might make the difference in his becoming a man who will support himself in the future or remaining a child who will run to Daddy every time he wants something.

If I were the parent I’d say: I worked damn hard for everything I have and as I DON’T support your Marxist ideals so we’ll just donate ALL of your college money to some needy kid so that YOUR privilege of having your parents pay for it can now disappear. I feel like all the people that have a problem with the progressive college student losing his free ride are a bunch of hypocrites. They agree with the progressive kid, but refuse to suffer the consequences of shedding their "privilege." It's like demanding to split a pie, but refusing to take a smaller piece for yourself. 2nd story, OP is a bit of an A-hole, just for not recognizing the abuse. I've had friends go back to Abusive relationships. I had to walk away. Why would I call OP an A-hole? Because she'll complain, not listen to the warnings & go back. End up like my friend on drugs, with a baby, married to the jerk that treats her like shit, & trys to sleep with everyone including her friends! I will always love my friend, but I had to walk away! I'm a 5' 11 woman and I was incredibly self conscious of my height at 15. In heels I was taller than most of the boys and even my dad. I slouched and tried to make myself smaller and less noticed which did quite the number on my self confidence. It was my dad who told me that "a short woman may be beautiful but if I held my head up and walked proudly a tall woman will always look regal" (the man knew just what to say) and now I rock my expensive heel collection proudly. And all my male cousins that I'm taller that? They don't say a word because they were raised to equate manliness with things like kindness, loyalty and taking care of their family not their height

The story about the kids refusing to learn how to take are of themselves. Put a stop to it right now. Sit them both down and tell them you have had it. You are their mother not their servant or slave. They are old enough to take care of themselves now. You will no longer be cooking for them or doing their laundry or cleaning their rooms, etc. If they want you to teach them how to do it you will. You will give each two lessons and then they are on their own. You are on strike. Permanently. Don’t cook more than you need just for yourself or they will likely take the left overs. You could consider getting a mini refrigerator with a lock on it for your left overs though. They are spoiled, lazy brats.

Even if they did not want such differing specialty diets there is no way Mom should cook three different meals for three different people. Exactly. I was taught how to cook from the time I could safely reach the stove while standing on a chair. I was doing my own laundry by 12. I was expected to keep my own room clean *always* at *all ages* and had household chores from as early as I can remember. Kids are so f'ing spoiled these days.

Yup... this is what happens when children are not given responsibilities from a young age. By 14 I was cooking, cleaning, baking, and helping mom around the house. When I complained my mom would tell me I will not last forever and I would like to know that you can take care off yourself when I am gone. Ps... she also taught me how to strip paint of the wall, prime and paint it, do basic plumbing, house repairs and gardening.

I had often told my husband about how I had been bullied when I was in school and how my classmates had made my life miserable. I received an invitation to my 10 year high school reunion and I decided to go. I not only was prepared for them to attempt to bully me at the reunion, I was actually HOPING they would attempt to bully me. I, was no longer the 17 year old who could be bullied. I was a 27 year old woman and just let them bring it. I would give them an attitude adjustment real fast like. I was ready for them. I was so ready that my husband declined to go with me. He had actually graduated from the same high school, some years before I graduated, but knowing that I was spoiling for a fight he wisely decided to stay home. I pulled into the parking lot at the park where we were meeting for a class picnic and when I stepped out I sort of slammed my car door and I looked around for the first hint of bullying because I WAS READY! Before I had gone more than 15 or so steps a former classmate stepped in front of me and threw her arms around me and gave me a big hug. She said "I am so glad you are here. I was hoping I could see you today because there is something I have been wanting to tell you." She reminded me that she had moved to our town and started school with us at the beginning of our Sophomore year. (I actually remembered that.) She said, "I was so scared because I didn't know anyone and I was afraid that no one would want to be my friend and then the first day I came here you walked up and smiled at me and told me your name and welcomed me and said you hoped we could be friends." (I had absolutely no memory of that.) She went on to say that I had changed her first day from what she had feared would be a nightmare into a total joy and she added, "I have been wanting to thank you for that." WELL. I was ready to attack the first person I saw and within 5 minutes of my arrival she had totally pulled my fangs. To my amazement as the afternoon wore on many other classmates came up and echoed her opinion of me. So how was my perception of how I had been treated so off? I can only think that I had taken the behavior of a couple of a**holes and extrapolated that into my memory of ALL my classmates. I went home with my tail between my legs and rather sheepishly told my husband what had happened. He got a HUGE grin on his face and he said, "Poor baby. You were all dressed up and had no where to go!" Yep. I was. I went in like a wolf and that one classmate totally turned me into a lamb. It's sad to think that I had over a hundred classmates and I had allowed the misdeeds of just a handful of jerks to totally color my memory of the other hundred or so. I actually have had the opportunity to attend my 50th reunion (I'm older than dirt) and many of those classmates, a few who had bullied me, many who had not, are now nothing more than a name and a picture on our Memory Board where the names and senior class pictures of deceased classmates now reside, but no reunion has ever been as memorable to me as that 10 year reunion (which was the first one I attended) when one sweet classmate did an absolute number on me and totally changed my perception of what had happened to me in school.

As a former foster parent, you Are NYA. You aren't forcing her to go to church but you need to protect her. When she runs, where does she run to? 1:11:00 my parents were like this. Whenever my sister and I would fight we would both get in trouble, didn't matter what the situation was or who started it. I can see it now for my mother being just lazy and unfair (I'm the older and my younger sister purposefully started most of the fights) BUT it taught my sister and I to work things out between us. It also put us on the same team against our parents. My sister's my best friend and we literally haven't had an argument since we were 10. I basically raised her and I adore her. Yeah my mom chose this parenting style because she was lazy but my sister and I are so close still now in our late 20s. My younger sister has ALWAYS been my best friend she's four years younger and as soon as I got my driver's license she would go everywhere with me I would take her to school, to Sonic, sometimes we would skip school and go to sonic, whenever I hung out with my friends she would come with me. Not because my parents made me but because we were best friends and I wanted her to come with me. This could also be because we lived so far out in the country the nearest neighbors were over a mile away. And they were old people. So my sister and I were literally all we had. There was no neighborhood kids to play with so we had to work things out. Idk but I'm grateful for the relationship I have with her and I can't imagine my life without her

My mom has been gone since 2012 and one of my biggest regrets is never learning to cook with her. I got to help her out sometimes, but I never actually cooked with her. Please as hard as it is, tell your kids that you want t teach them how to cook for themselves because you won't be around forever, that you're not doing it because you're abandoning them, but because you want them to be able to take care of themselves and you when you no longer can. I admire you, you are a strong woman who never got to recover from your husband leaving because you had two kids and yourself to support. Please excuse the speech to text. I was listening to this from the background and felt compelled to make a comment after listening to the story about the 9 year old with body image issues. This isn't the right approach and will only prove more harmful to her niece. I urge the mom to get her into therapy NOW. I was already engaged in ED behaviors by that age, and EDs have nearly claimed my life more than once in my 48 years. Stephanie Lange has some great videos here on KZbin if someone reads this and suffers from body image issues, particularly with an eye to social media. Abbey Sharp is a body + dietitian on KZbin with scientifically accurate information. She talks about the dangers of dieting in childhood. OP wearing a 2 piece at her own home is just this little girl's aunt wearing her swimsuit. It seems to me that the mom might be making a bigger deal out of this than even her own daughter. I firmly believe that her daughter has body image issues, but I'm glad to hear that she is still willing to get into a swimsuit and swim. Ugh. Sorry this is a mess...I have to go.
