I'm not sure if anyone explained the "cat with coins" thing, but here's some info! That's a representation of a Maneki-Neko. Usually depicted as a Calico, it's a good luck talisman/charm symbol in Japanese culture (also appears in Oriental culture as a whole with other names and origins, I think). Nowadays presented in ceramic, plastic or latex figures for bringing good luck to the owner. If memory serves, the story about how this came to be is roughly as follows: One night, amidst a storm, a lord stopped beneath a tree to take refuge from the rain. After looking around a bit he saw a cat raising it's paw as if it was calling him, from the door to a temple. The lord then decided to approach said cat, as as soon as he left lightning stroke the tree he was using as protection. Since then, the Calico Maneki-Neko is seen as a good luck and fortune figure. Hope that adds a whole other level of wholesome to the image.
