I am a middle aged woman (If I am wildly optimistic) and I love these stories. Back in the 80s my uncle was importing cars from germany. His dealership was selling them to the oil guys in Oklahoma and Texas. My junior and senior year of high school I was transporting cars for him, doing the driveaway thing. over the weekends. After HS I started working for him selling cars. That morphed into my own parts company on the side. I started selling EPA and DOT kits for people importing cars. I was a skinny, rocker chick tomboy back then and, for some crazy reason customers loved me. At first, my uncle required me to "dress professional" but the more I sold, the less he cared how I dressed. Over a year or so I morphed back into the rocker chick I was. Black suede mocs, lace up jeans, bleached blonde hair and my beloved leather jacket. They weren't expecting me to walk out and greet them but once they realized I knew the cars forward and backwards they liked me and they remembered me. That was my biggest asset. People remembered buying a car from the freaky girl. They kept my card and told their friends. lol Anyways, late 80s the economy shifted, exchanges rates shifted and our little haven of the used car business dried up overnight. I went to college and became a forensic psych. You would think that would be interesting, and it has it's moments but really, the best, most exciting years of my life so far were the 5 years I was out hustling cars and parts. Good or bad, every day was an adventure where just about anything could happen. You could make the deal of a lifetime, or you could find out someone in Germany got their wires crossed and 3 cars slated for import ended up on the parts car list and they were cut into 3 pieces before they were put on the boat. Some days you are the pig, some days you are the spit.

I couldn't agree with you more about the cell phone thing! One thing that really irks me is how you can never get someone on the phone but when you see them in person, they always have the phone in their hand and they're always looking at it. Along those lines (as in your case with the transporter) I realize that there are times when people really can't talk but if I'm paying someone to do a job for me, I expect to be their highest priority.

The company I used to work for, used to check background (through the insurance company) every 6 months, to see if any of the CDL drivers had any tickets/suspensions/etc (because the states do not inform the CDL holders if there are any problems with their licenses). Unfortunately, every time our CDL licenses were checked (it's like a credit rating, the more its checked, the rating drops), our insurance costs go up. Hope the rest of your day goes better Rob, & hoping for your 100K by Valentine's Day! God Bless & Be Safe!

I was born raised and have lived in SC my entire life. I was about 27 and had a car. It got repossessed at 2 am. Tag was still on it. Didn't think too much about it. They said i would still have to pay property tax on it for the year. So I went down to the tax office and paid prorated property tax on the car. Fast forward 5 years. Went to highway dept to put another car in my name and they said my license was suspended because i didn't turn tag in on repossessed car. I had been driving around SC NC and GA doing drywall that whole time. I know how frustrated the car hauler was!

Similar arrests have happened to me. My license was suspended for unpaid fines. Zero communications from the entities who suspended it. Drove for seven years on a suspended license. Less than a year after it was brought to my attention, the federal government overturned the ruling allowing states to suspend driving privileges for unpaid fines. I still drive. Been pulled over multiple times and arrested. Everytime I tell whichever judge the same thing: you can't jail me for unpaid fines and you know that. You can jail me for contempt, but I'm never paying the fines for suspended license or no insurance.

That happened to me years ago. Had my bike parked on the street lying enough into the fall when snow hit. Got ticketed and forgot to pay it. Many months went by, maybe a year or so. Went to see a friend in my old one cop podunk home town. Went downtown to the only bar in town. About ten minutes after sitting down said cop walks in says he has a warrant for my arrest. Says he didn't recognize my truck so he ran the plates and it was for that dang ticket. He also said I would have to pay him on the spot ($160...the original ticket was $5) or he'd have to take me in. After a bunch of back and forth I think he let me go to some other town to get the money from my aunt or some bs. I'll never forget that though when he came in the bar said he was looking for so n so I said that's me to which he replied I have a warrant for your arrest. Good times.

Sometimes "letting it all out" is cathartic. I will only say no matter what was on that transporter, losing your friend/driver would have been worse. You can ALWAYS replace a thing... but you can NEVER replace a person. Just another fine example of how no matter who you are, sh*t happens... sometimes for the stupidest of reasons. Georgia essentially suspended my license for leaving the state. I left GA, went to Colorado, so I let my insurance in GA lapse, and got insurance in Colorado. They automatically suspend or in this case put a hold on your license for letting your insurance lapse. Worse yet, to get it removed, I had to go all the way to the Governor's office. Then even when they did remove their hold, they neglected to inform me it was cleared.

Years ago I got two speeding tickets that I asked my accountant to pay for me. She had my card info and often took care of utility bills, car payments, insurance and whatnot so I could focus on sales all the time. She messed up and didnt pay the tickets. A few months later I get pulled over for a burned out tail light and what do you know I had a suspended license. The notice went to an old address so I didn't know. Well at the time I lived in the city and didn't own a car. I just used rentals when I needed a car. Since I cycled, bused, taxied everyplace now I didn't think about it. I just got an ID instead of a license. I paid the tickets so someday that was done and I could get a license. Well fast forward 9 years now and I need a license to go live in a part of Kentucky where there is no public transit. If you want to go someplace you need to drive. Everything is too far apart to cycle and the roads too dangerous. Well after 9 years of not being on the road I now have to take the written drivers test again and get a permit. I have to wait the six months of practice drive time to get the full license. To get the full license I need to take the road driving test all over again just like when I was 16. I'm 50 and have to take the road test again. I dont have a car and know no one with a car in this city. So I have to hire a driving school and take their course. Getting a license again is going to take 6 to 8 months and cost me $1,500 to $2,000!!!! Dam. Should have fixed everything and held on to the license even if I was not driving.
