We need to continue to talk and scream about this. I LOVE Pokemon but absolutely hate the community at certain times. 10 years with the community and I've seen the ugly side more times than I can count sadly. And it wasn't just that incident with Nintendo which favors certain creators because of "certain qualities", it extends more far out than you think. Overall y'all, we gotta be better, and we'll continue to scream this from the heavens that this ain't okay. Not in this community, not in any community. God speed Nick, miss your face ♥

i’ve played pokémon since before i can remember, and i don’t think people understand the tears i shed when pokémon x and y came out and i saw i could finally make my character black. even though it wasn’t my exact skin tone, the idea of being black in a game as i am in real life just overwhelmed me. i was 8. i was so happy that i was finally receiving the bare minimum. at EIGHT YEARS OLD i was feeling the impact of misrepresenting and racism. let that sink in, and know that that is not an exclusive experience. many black and poc children go through the same pain.

alphamarigi, they never mentioned art being their human right. Notably in this video the art was never being criticized besides the trainer models which I feel was valid criticism and it wasn’t unwarranted. Also Jorden, why shouldn’t it be a human right? Why should anyone be discriminated against? It’s their “right” to feel bigoted towards other races or the lbgt+ but what isn’t their right is attacking people who belong to those, hurling slurs at them, bashing them for who they are, etc. you can argue the freedom of speech and free thought but actually applying them to those demographics is disgusting and wrong. I’m not saying that they aren’t allowed to think or have opinions that in my opinion are objectively bad, baseless and flawed but criticizing people for things they have no control over or who they are as long as they aren’t doing anyone any harm is not okay in any sense of the word.
@PaintedHoundie

Jorden literally missing the point to end up defending the right to discriminate. This is such an important topic to bring up and talk about. More needs to be said and done about the racism, discrimination, and injustices that many still see on a daily basis in this community and the world at large. It's such an important thing, you would think more would be done to change the situation, unfortunately it seems many think it's not an issue, don't care, or actively believe these hateful and racist beliefs. So thank you for bringing light to a super important issue that exists for many minorities, especially those who are black. Hopefully change can start to happen within this community and improve it for the betterment of everyone affected.

Designing a character that makes you feel comfortable shouldn't be political for fuck's sake, Pokemon has a large demographic so asking them to make you feel a bit more included shouldn't be seen as political, it's easy for people to say something's "political" when everything is always made with them in mind.

More power to you. I'm terribly, terribly sorry for what you've had to experience. I'm Pakistani & I keep no secret of being one. Been a part of online Pokémon communities since 2009, & as a brown individual I can confirm that white & cis-het privilege along with racism are as real here as they are elsewhere. While I've met the most wonderful people & grown up with the best online friends I could have asked for, I've come across dozens upon dozens of toxic, racist, sexist, & ignorant-to-privilege users that make one step back for a moment & wonder.... Is this really a "kid's game" as they say? Why are these young individuals so full of hate for me for no reason at all? I have never interacted with them, had any differences, or ever hurt them. Then why? Representation MATTERS! While I have my share of personal grievances with the community, they do not match with the real-world implications & blatant discrimination that you have had to face. So while I am sharing a bit of my experience in agreement, I am not making this about myself & I'm once again extremely, sincerely sorry for what you had to face. May our community learn to do better & help create a space which is safe & welcoming for all. Stay strong.

I’m actually making a fan game and there are going to be black character options, and even the hair will be different. Yo! I hear you man. When I draw my own characters I make them Black because I don’t want to rely on others to do it for me. It’s not like people give manga artists a hard time when all of their characters are Japanese or when White artists make their characters White. So why should we be the exception? Also when I play games if I can I always make the character Black and I’m pretty vocal if a character customization option is lacking in representation. Some folks were happier when they could ignore this issue but those days are over. We have a voice that’s impossible to disregard and these things matter. Game Freak is starting to get it and I hope in the future we get more natural hair options for Black characters. Preach on brotha!

Racism is not a political issue. The discussion of attempting to solve racism on a systemic level is somewhat political, but racism itself isn't and never will be. Racism is an issue of human rights, the issue of people being treated as the humans that they are. Telling someone to treat you like a person and with the respect you deserve is not "making things political". Also, I'm happy to say this video was recommended to me. (Read the whole comment before replying) How is it the community's fault that there are a lack of black creators? If less black people choose to become content creators, how is that the community's fault? The only solution would be to either force creators of other races to stop making content or to force black people who have no interest in making content to make content. The truth is there are just less black people interested in creating Pokemon content than there are people of other races that are interested in doing so. There is nothing specifically holding black people back from becoming Pokemon content creators rather there just aren't as many that actually have that interest and there's nothing wrong with that, they should like whatever they want to like. I hope this does not come across as ignorant or offensive, as that was not my intention at all. If there is something you feel I am just not educated on I am open to hearing it and maybe learning something. This comment is meant with good intentions, and I do agree that equal representation is a beautiful thing, I'm really just trying to figure out who is at fault and what the solution is.

As someone who is a public figure, I believe you can make a change with your platform. It is really sad that the world really haven’t changed much. The Black community is still being hunted down as if it’s hunting season. Keep your chin up and keep moving forward, one step at a time. And don’t forget, you can make a change as… YOUR JOURNEY CONTINUES! ❤️🙏✌️

First of all Nick, thank you for having the courage to speak up about this. Its not easy to speak about racism especially as a black person - I know from experience. Racism and politics are not the same thing. The man who made racist comments in discord did so because he was racist, not because of his political views. Politics is used to deflect from actual racism. Racism existed before the United States was founded. The entire system is racist. If you have the chance you should research the racist policies that both sides have conspired to do. One side is overtly racist but the other side is just as racist but is sneaker about it. The other little disagreement I have with what you said was that Black people who aren't bothered by this issue should grow up. We should be understanding with other black people and help inform them and bring them along. If you say something that could be perceived as an attack you'll lose them. Its up to those of us with voice to speak but our speech should be informed and cordial. I think you did a great job of displaying that in this video. Never stay silent!

The fact that people are mad about representation is ridiculous. Representation has nothing to do with politics. Someone seeing representation of their race, or their gender, or sexual orientation could mean the world to them. These options shouldn't bother people because they have nothing to do with them. If you don't like it don't pick it. People need to stop hating stuff just because it's different. We are all human we need peace love and positivity not hate!

It’s surprising how little people try to expose this community despite all of its heinous actions.

I wouldn’t generalize an entire group of people like that..... you’re no better than them then. Any large fanbase will have their scum and idiots and the larger the group the more of them there are. It’s unavoidable. Not to mention how vocal they are. “Always be aware of your surroundings.”

@@ColdEmperor I don’t intend to generalize them ofc, I’m mostly pointing out how little people actually know of all the bs they pull and rarely raise a finger about it. It’s unfair how most of these people fly under the radar despite doing the internet equivalent of a hit and run with witnesses literally surrounding them.

We really need to keep talking about this and try our damn hardest to get racism out of our community and from the get go for me I don’t care what race or skin color anyone is if they are enjoyable and I feel a connection I’m in full support of everybody like that including you nick so just keep up the good work and try not to let this really get in your way

As a trans girl of color, I infinitely appreciate you using your platform to speak on this topic. People who consider representation of minorities such as skin color, gender identity, or sexuality in games to be political are in a place of extreme privilege. To be able to think like that shows that their needs are catered to, while we still fight to have who we are be seen. And I thank you from the bottom of my Transgender, Lesbian, Autistic, African American heart that you made a video like this. It takes a lot of courage. And I appreciate it 🥰

Facts bro when you said “it took me awhile to accept the color I am”. I felt that and to be honest before I didn’t care so much to look at my race and how things were going on in the world and not seeing the corruption around me and the friends or racist people around me the feeling of trying to fit in or trying to find yourself under multiple personas its crazy the world we live in I truly hope one day we all can realize and teach our children that we need to love one another and that black kids shouldn’t be having the “talk” and tell that people will downplay for your skin color. Just know man thank you scared and i love you bro (pause) and keep it a 💯 big dawg 🙏🏾

I'm so sorry that you experienced this. Racism is wrong period but we especially don't need that here in the Pokémon community, which should be a safe space for EVERYONE. I remember arguing with racist white fans on Twitter that were defending the whitewashing of Nessa and I was so mad. As a gay Asian Pokémon fan, I just want to say that I stand with black Pokéfans and the black community as a whole and yall will ALWAYS be welcome with open arms.

As I am reading the comments and watching the video the amazing support and strong positive following you have makes me believe in this community change can happen but we all have to stand for it as one and come together for the right reasons. And if some ppl dont like you because you want your sprite(which is supposed to be your game life representation of your real life self) to be black or that you speak on a realistic topic using the platform you built than good riddance to them n let the door hittem where the lord splittem!!!
