This is honestly one of the most well-made music videos I’ve ever seen. The whole concept symbolizes something in my view. One of the most obvious points is the drastic difference in tone and cinematography between the “day” and the “night” sequences. From the beginning “night” is established as the anxiety-inducing, paranoid, and lonely atmosphere. This is very masterfully contrasted with the presence of people in the “day” sequence. The man has interactions with the people around him (the woman walking past him, the bike rider dropping a phone). But slowly these two realities start to merge together and the safety margin created by the brightness and normality of the “day” sequence is starting to fade. The man starts acting out “night” actions in the day (looking back for no reason, dodging a nonexistent car). This is exactly the place where you can’t trust any of the realities anymore. All this was to preface my main point: in tandem with the title of the song “Man of War”, I believe the music video visualizes PTSD and paranoia. The “day” sequence is real life and the main character has actually interacted with his surroundings. However, his mind, paranoia, and PTSD has caused an alternate “night” timeline, which slowly starts to converge into reality. At the end, he can’t distinguish what is real or fake anymore (the turning point is when he looks at a picture of himself in the phone…i.e. paranoia has kicked in). The people following him so intently are a part of that fake reality he has created. These people within this world (his mind) try to creep into his life and take control. This is seen initially when we can see a shadow following him in the “day” sequence. Gradually, a whole physical appearance pops up and the people following him increases. I symbolize these people as the trauma and mental scars that the main characters has to carry. No matter what he does, he can never get rid of them. He is scared of them. Terrified. He tries ignoring them and running from them, but they always remain within a constant distance away from him. At the end, he trips over and…nothing happens. The people, his trauma and guilt is part of him, following him but not there to physically hurt him. He can never get rid of them, except to accept their presence and coexist with them. At the end, the man is distraught but calmer. He realizes that he can never escape his mind and these presences attached to him, but just maybe he won’t have to run away from them at all.
@KaosMasterX
@KaosMasterX 2 жыл бұрын
At 2:09 when the phone was dropped, it had shown a picture of the man sitting on the bench. It's not paranoia, he was definitely being watched and targeted. As for what, idk.

A friend of mine recently committed suicide and in his final social media post he included a link to this song. He was using it as a symbol of strength. But unfortunately he has now taken his life. I think the video could also tell a story about PTSD, and not just anxiety as people are saying. A man of war that has flashbacks of the people he's killed whenever the video switches from day to night. The man can't get over the guilt as they chase him, and eventually he can't tell what is real and what is just another nightmare he's having, so he starts seeing them in real life. At the end, the man stops running and realizes that there's nothing he can do about it, so he comes to terms with it, living with the burden.

It's difficult to explain to people what it's like to wait twenty years for something. Some of you reading haven't even been alive that long. But that's how long us hardcore Radiohead fans have waited for Man Of War. This song has been known to Radiohead fans for all this time. We heard it in live performances we were lucky enough to attend, in rare, scratchy, ethereal bootlegs of live shows we couldn't get to. You can see them developing this song in the studio in the film "Meeting People Is Easy." And with every release since OK Computer, all of us have been hoping we'd finally hear a studio version of this song. Well, we have it now, and they absolutely did not disappoint. This was worth waiting twenty years for. And that this song smokes everything else being put out by other artists today? That's just a teensy cherry in an avalanche of cherries on a very big and delicious cake.

OmniFilmDK This song was pitched for James Bond but it was around since 1995. They tried pitching it for spectre in 2015 but we're denied because it wasn't made especially for the film and they couldn't nominate the movie for best orignal song if they did. After that radiohead made a whole new song just for the movie called spectre which was also denied because the producers for the movie said it was too sad and dark.

The video is basically showing the comparison between how you look on the outside, and how you feel on the inside, day and night. During the day, on the outside, he seems like a pretty nice guy, on the inside, he’s scared, running from something, he’s a fighter, and eventually, his night and day become one. The man of war pertains to the fact that he has a war of personas, and how his outside persona clashes with his feelings.

The ending as well suggest, at least to me, the same lesson I learned at the end of that period. That is, most of the time you're just running away from yourself; and if you manage to stop, you'll find out that there was nothing really serious to worry about in the first place. Hope you guys are doing okay, stay safe and strong everybody.

It ranges from giving me roses, asking to take a selfie with me (I'm recognized for the unusual volunteer work I do), or they want to flirt. Some turn into stalkers that threaten and assault me. When the band was asked to write a song for Spectre in 2015, they recorded this final version of the song and when that was rejected, they wrote the song Spectre (which also ended up being cut). You can tell Thom's voice sounds more like how it sounds now. Amazing track, either way! ❤

I think that they shot the day scene all at once then the night scene and then spliced together where they needed to. Amazing video none the less, why do so many Radiohead leave so many questions unanswered...

Despite the fact that OK, Computer didn’t leave my CD player back in the late 90s for over 2 years, I’m actually glad this song was officially released 20 years later, as it helped me get through a very difficult time in my life. Thank you, Radiohead.

I’ve seen some replies to a comment saying Radiohead has fallen off a little… they haven’t fallen off, they’re just growing old and it’s hard to do things in general when you’re old. If anything their work is more impressive now than ever because of the longevity of Radioheads determination

What a throwback song. Sounds great, and like it belongs in the 90s. It's so weird to have a song released today with so much care and attention giving it, that sounds like its from the 90s. A time capsule. I don't think it would have fitted well on OK Computer, so a good idea to leave it off at the time imo, but that's taking nothing away from it. It's still a great b-side, or extra or, whatever you want to call it. Thanks for releasing it all these years later Radiohead. A lovely sentiment.

Lyrics for you my friends. Drift all you like From ocean to ocean Search the whole world But drunken confessions And hijacked affairs Will just make you more alone When you come home I'll bake you a cake Made of all their eyes I wish you could see me Dressed for the kill You're my man of war You're my man of war And the worms will come for you Big Boots Yeah, yeah, yeah So unplug the phones Stop all the taps It all comes flooding back From poisoned clouds To poisoned dwarf You're my man of war You're my man of war And the worms will come for you Big Boots Yeah the worms will come for you Big Boots For you Big Boots

Big Boots symbolize like a son to a father when he's a child. Father comes home from work and the son recognizes his big work boots as a symbol of power or strength. Big boots belong to a big man though the song is trying to say mentally.

My take on this video. The people following this man are his thoughts, all of his depressing, sad, discomforting thoughts. They start to creep up on him when he is alone (Night). He finds comfort when he is with others (Day). Eventually though, his thoughts seep in all of his life and come at any time, day or night. When he trips, the people wait for him. The bad thoughts stop when he stops, but he wants to continue, and the thoughts will too.

A small, but brilliant inclusion: When the lead picks up the phone dropped by the bicyclist and later checks it, he sees a picture of himself on the bench reading the paper. It adds to the paranoia, confusion, fear and impending Doom of the anxiety and of the facade of normalcy he tries to put up during the daylight shots. Sheer genius is this video!

feels like my social anxiety. Doesn't get in my way of life much, but when I walk down a busy high street or street with traffic, I feel like I'm being chased.
