Hey Ray Ray. Thanks for doing my trailer tires last month. I work at dorman and I was a quality engineer from 2016 until 2022. When I started the warranty Rate was over 50% and I got it down to less than 15% before I took a higher position in Dorman. They've really turned the focus more toward quality.

I just bought and installed a Dorman coolant reservoir on my 2011 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and so far that bottle is solid. It got awesome reviews from everyone who bought one and it saved me about $75 compared to the Motorcraft part. I also likes what Dorman did with the heater hose for my truck. Replacing the stupid plastic "Y" pipe with an aluminum pipe. Nice job!

Ray don’t let the comment section get you down brother, you’ll go crazy over a minority of viewers that you ain’t going to please looking to point out something thing to complain about, when you open yourself/life out for public display there will be jerks yanking your chain. It’s disheartening to know that it’s getting under your skin, Ray..we all love you and your content. Don’t get involved in these internet flame wars, there’s no winners just opinions and like azzholes everybody’s got one. Watching you go through jobs with a joke and a smile and just persevere is remarkable ! 🙂 Most techs would just basket case these projects, but you’re honest and show the mistakes and learn from them. Yes sometimes I feel I’m watching rainman rays little garage of horrors, but that’s your charm, you never know what is coming in the door and it works and is part of my morning routine at work. I hated doing electronics warranty work. The pay was crap for all the effort. But there was part of me which just would not allow me to do a half- axxed minimal repair for warranty. I always looked for other potential problems- mostly bad solder joints (Just love that horrible lead free solder) and repaired them. I had close to zero call back rate (.01 %) and refused to compromise on my work standard and ethic, even if it cost more time and effort. At least I could go home feeling that my work was above standard quality for the industry.

The difference in the phaser is the old design vs new. They changed the thickness of the spring and added that stud to hold more tension on the spring. I know the wedge seems sketchy but we changed tons of 3V Mustang cams using those and never had one slip if wedged tightly like you did. The chain guides have a lip to them so it can only move so much. That said the only thing i saw was the phaser bolt install. It is a torque to yield and should be replaced anytime it is removed. It is 30 ft/lbs plus 90 degrees on the bolt. It is hollow to pass oil to the phaser. If over/under torqued they are known to collapse and back out. If this happens, it usually eats the cam and the phaser and sometimes the timing cover and valve cover. I also realize this is warranty work so they may have cheaped on that as well.
@GaryH-pw9cm10 ай бұрын
Yes the torque is critical on that bolt. It is a special bolt. And should be replaced. I hope it does not fail.

I did this job on my '05 Ford expedition. Stuck plugs, both phasers, cam tensioners and guides. I didn't buy a tool to hold the chain in place. Buddy of mine worked in a machine shop, so I went to a Ford dealer and measured the tool and made a print. Then I took the print to my buddy gave him a six pack of his favorite beer, and he made me a tool.😂😂😂 Ended up also having a blown up roller follower, which dinged up the cam. So I ended up replacing the cam the follower and lifters. When the roller follower came apart it also popped the cap off of the top of the valve stem so my valve dropped but it didn't bend. I was able to lift the valve up and press the spring put the cap on without pulling the head. It was a two-day job and I hated every minute of it. After doing it in my driveway, I vowed never to buy that engine ever again!!! After I was done it cranked on the first time and I traded that thing off!!!!!

the cam phasers on the 5.4s were always loud and ticky like that, thats the way they were designed. one of the service bullitens from ford just told them to ad 5w-50 weight oil to quiet them down if anybody came in complaining about the ticking, the cam phasers adjust timing using oil pressure and using a heavier weight oil quieted them down.
@tiffanybolen447310 ай бұрын
That cam phaser has a tty bolt. Did you replace phaser with the old bolt? Also blue lock tight should be used on the bolt. These triton engines are great engines but to get long life out of them they need new timing chains, upgraded oil pumps, and ratchet style lock metal tensioners, not the cheap factory plastic ones. And the phasers also need lockouts installed. The tune isn't necessary after lockouts if the engine light being on don't bother the customer. The tune basicly just turns off vcts and clears engine light. And you failed to torque the bolt to spec.
