Eleven footwork strategies to flank your opponent in a fight. One of the single most effective strategies in all combat sports is to gain an angle on the side of your opponent by moving off the centerline.
This simple concept can be quite difficult to accomplish in a boxing match unless you are equipped with a working understanding of foot work patterns.
Footwork simply means how, where, and why your feet move during the execution of any given technique.
These 11 boxing footwork patterns can be used and adapted for other combat sports as well, including kickboxing and MMA.

There's really sad news from El Paso about a Jiu Jitsu and MMA coach there that got beaten to a critical state by a group of over ten people. He jumped in to the fight trying to stop them from beating on one other defenseless person. It's hard for people to not want to help, I hope the guy pulls through 🙁

So instead of watching the content, I stepped into that room as you, and I have to say it was awkward. I imagined being a foreigner asking people to film me in a gym at night speaking a language not their own... suddenly I was hit with empathy for your plight on a different level than just hearing you make comments about having a hard time getting people to do certain things, like boom mic holder for example. Suddenly taking more note of Shao, the camera lady of the night (lots of reflections, plus she's in every shot she's not filming...) than the content, and I couldn't be mad at her for not knowing how to predict and aim the camera... she looks like a random lady off the streets, or Shao's wife or something... well now I can't help but feel grateful that she was cool enough to show up and hold the camera... I'm sure there's things she'd rather do at that moment. Anyways, it was an interesting journey even if it was mostly comprised of imagination and speculation... so I figured I'd share part of it. Maybe one day you could introduce us to some of the people who help you make the vids and a little about them like how you met them and how you got them to help... idk, just an idea, figured I'd throw it out there too. Now if you'll excuse me I have to get out there and train... pillow reps... What? Sleep is perhaps the most important part of training!

@@RamseyDewey I always got mixed results when it comes to footwork. Probably because we only sparr every 3 weeks. Defensively, I can bait some of my partners to over extend so I can counter attack. But sometimes, I myself do that too. Fortunately, I tend to realise that before they noticed.

@@RamseyDewey That's saying, I got a new problem currently. Due to the Corona situation, I have to move back to my country, which turned out to offer a great variety of options on martial arts. When I joined my MMA gym in Germany, coach said I lacked cardio. But now, after meeting a man who competed in kick boxing, and won a few prize, during my quarantine and another guy who won a few medals in take kwon do and had when through 4 different striking MA, they both said I got terrible flexibility, being only capable of landing a roundhouse to the ribs and the cardio shouldn't be my concern right now. Both of them suggest I need to find another striking martial arts like Tae Kwon do or Karate as the base. I found some solid clubs that training those who. But to advance enough in Tae Kwon do or Karate so you can go back to MMA will take a painfully long amount of time. What are my options in your opinion? I'm still doing conditioning because those gyms won't be reopened in the next few weeks due to the lock down.

The bit about how the feet move the hips > torso > shoulders > head in a kinetic chain is pretty much the key to fighting. For example you can't throw a hard left hook if you are stepping backward with your left foot. Knowing what strikes can come with what steps is paramount to beginning to defend yourself -- and typically, the counter to the opponent's step is a step of your own that denies their punch a target while setting up your punch to land cleanly. It's one full body motion in a way; step + punch, punch + step.

You can categorize the footwork here as either circling or cutting angle footwork and if you think about it a lot of famous boxers use variations of them. Ali did the darting jab and clockwise 1-2-1-2 but more of a 1-1-2. Pacquiao’s signature is the slip step and straight to cut the angle then use the 2-3-2-3 to go deeper Great video as always coach!

Ramsey some of your beginning stuff in the vid I used to practice on the bag for footwork. I cant really remember why I stopped. I even seen a video of Brad from fight bible show some simple heavybag and I thought I used to use some of that of how he moved to rotate with his leg and hips and keeping his head off center line. Not as good as him of course. Something I noticed both with my dad towards his karate style and martial arts look towards Bruce lee and Bobby and Judah the boxers down the road. Is that everybody thinks you can never stand square and should always stand sideways as if you'll become thin as paper and never get hit and it has better balance. When I started studying muay thai offline and getting tips from a friend who practices it to add to my karate to make it better on stuff I felt it was missing I started to stand more square. Majority of my muscle is in my legs from hours of stretching and lifting over the years of practicing martial arts and working on a small farm. Anyway I'm not the best at retelling stuff I seen or heard but I was telling one of the boxers one day about you and that video you put out on how to land the cross when you're to far away by taking a slight stomp step forward. His immediate reaction was no that's no good never stand square because its easy to get knocked back. Already knew that but I think people misunderstand when why and how you should be standing square at the wrong times or better staying standing square. Another boy that learned some stuff with them I showed him a video of a youtuber that pushed the bag to work on keeping distance which is something i do . He said no that's all wrong. Honestly the only things I think are wrong is people tryiing stuff they cant do or shouldn't do. really appreciate this video you showed to alot of new stuff I've never seen I'd love to practice in the future.

Hey Ramsey, any thoughts about double-standards in boxing or basically in any martial arts gyms? I dunno if I turned a blind eye to it for so long or am just noticing it now but in our boxing gym, there's seems to be some subtle double standards. Our top guy doesnt like it when he sees others are just prancing around and not putting in work (understandable), yet doesn't mind when his homeboys are doing all the chatting. Moreso, I notice that he gives more time to his homeboys even tho theyre not planning to compete. I dont have plan to compete as well but am serioust o learn about the sport yet he doesnt give me the time of day. If he wants his boxing club to just be his friend group, I feel like I should do both of us a favour and leave.

Can you show how to shoot takedown against guys who like circling around? Shooting for a double or a single at these kind of people is very difficult for me. And if i stand up right with them, i would get out box ( i'm a terrible striker, only know how to use strike to set up takedown). There's countless of threads on the internet about how to beat a grappler as a striker but there's no threads about how to deal with strikers who's also very decent at defending grapplers

Step one: learn how to box. Look at this video (assuming you are working from an orthodox stance) every time you get one of the angles shown in these 11 footwork patterns, you have a clean and clear shot for a takedown. Not only that, since you are flanking your opponent from the side, he cannot sprawl on you, he cannot get an underhook and stuff your shot, he cannot strike you on the way in. Just as the defense against grappling is learn grappling, the offense against striking is learn striking. Know your enemy.

Going to his right is fine in the ring but what about the streetz? I mean, what if he has a weapon in his right hand. Wouldn't I want to move to his left? How do I apply these techniques so I can move to his left ..if I'm right handed and am in an orthodox stance?

Don’t get into street fights, especially not with people willing to attack you with weapons.

@@RamseyDewey I agree but what if things just happen? I see the jab where you move to the right...I'm now thinking that maybe that's vulnerable to kicks from the rear leg? I'm wondering...as a general rule..if it would make more sense to move to the left against people in an orthodox stance and to the right against people in a Southpaw stance? To avoid rear leg kicks and whatever else? I completely agree with use of angles and fighting from the side...I'm just trying to...build for myself.... footwork that has a good chance of putting me in that position. Finally, in this long winded comment. How do you work your footwork drills? Do you start with one person throwing punches statically whilst the other person kinda ducks and then tries to apply the footwork? Then later, move on to situations where both parties are free to move as they will? Thanks for the video...this is such an important topic.
