A prune is a specific variety of plum that happens to dry well. They are smaller and darker purple verging on almost black. They are delicious fresh, when dried they are something of an acquired taste due to their texture which is best described as fibrously snotty. Prunes are great additions to stuffing, often used for roasted pork, and they would be delicious with chicken. Not sure about the carrots AND the prunes, however, with are very sweet and it might be a bit much. lemon juice in water will probably kill parasites and bacteria if strong enough, and you can bet someone like stannis doesn't drink alcohol because that might lead to fun. As far as I know, acorns are no edible without extensive processing, because they are so filled with tannic acid that not only do they taste inedibly bitter, but if you ate enough to make a meaningful meal, it would wreck your digestion and make you rather ill. Hogs are often fattened on acorns precisely because they can eat them, whereas people really cannot, and thus it's a very economical way to feed them that also supposedly makes for delicious pork. Sounds like Illyrio knows his way around a table, I must approve. Except to say that I have had British jellied eel and it was utterly disgusting, but then it was British Food, and I suspect Illyrio isn't boiling a lamprey in vinegar and sticking it in a jar. I figure the sliced ham refers to something like prosciutto, which is of course wonderful. Snails in garlic butter, either broiled and eaten hot, or broiled, chilled and canned are a classic of French and also Asian cuisine. I like them, although if I had realized they were insensitive to the needs of the children menaced by trolleys, I might retract my good will.

🤓 umm actually corn was historically used to refer to any grain before the maize crop became widespread from the new world. Martin is against using new world crops in westeros, as seen by the obvious abscence of potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco from the story. The "corn" the raven eats is probably barley or wheat kernels.

Note on a nice detail you missed about the acorn paste; it's bitter because Coldhands didn't soak the acorn nuts. Acorns have a *shitton* of tannins in them, which is both bitter and can cause health problems in the gut if you take too much (namely, reducing the uptake of nutrients and inhibiting digestive enzymes). Acorn flour is a thing, and you can eat them safely just fine. You're just supposed to soak the acorn nuts first to leech out the tannins. So yeah, Coldhands was straight up feeding them toxic acorns xD.

If you're ever low on acorns and need to eat a finger, go with the ring finger. 2:23:30 yes, that's president why he's behaving like that! Why do you think Manderly brought so much food with him? When you reading Martin books, and analyzing meals from ASOIAF, and at the same time looking at the realities, I am extremely surprised how in the Anglo-Saxon world they forgot about the meal called supper apart from the fact that something like lunch was invented, which "eliminated" the second breakfast in Anglo-Saxon countries, people remember about dinner, but what then? In all languages there is supper, but Americans threw out supper from the menu and only dinner remained.

@@ethanfox8979 Because in the US you leave work after 5 p.m., so you have dinner around 6 p.m., so if you wanted to have supper it would have to be at 9 p.m.... In Poland, we go home between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., so dinner is served until 5 p.m. and there is time for supper.

I love these videos so much, it sounds like you guys have so much genuine fun! It may be that I'm entirely lost in the sauce (food pun!) but I'm curious if the Herons in the Quentyn chapters could mean anything. I know they are used in British coats of arms so there could be a link to the nobility and the themes of those feasting on the common folk. there is also a Greek myth of Erodius where some horses went mad (warged no doubt) and killed them and they got turned into birds. I'm curious if the hawk is Daenerys and the potential realistic shake up she represents and the White Walkers are the more previously believed to not be an actual current threat (as dragons were before the three flap-lizards hatched) that is the White Walker and the shadowy dark Long Night. or maybe the curtains are blue because they are blue?
