The Scooby Dooniverse must have the world's greatest black market because villains keep managing to get expensive equipment that you need specialized training for like its nothing. I wouldn't even be surprised if the mob was secretly leading the Scooby gang to where each mystery happens when they need to get rid of someone that has drawn too much attention to themself. (Also I'm so happy about that Cameron Mitchell clip getting used)
@JoeGoesOver4 ай бұрын
Being secretly manipulated by a powerful enemy was a plot point in 'Mystery Incorporated', after all! I've often thought it'd make a neat Scooby DTV to focus on all these old villains who could NOT have pulled off their schemes singlehandedly, and how they were all employed by a sinister organization pulling their strings behind the scenes, like Professor Moriarty. I'd love to be able to write something like that, but sadly I'm incapable of crafting a good narrative story. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

Something that I never understood with Baptiste's caper is why the writers didn't just say he was the owner, heir or just agent working for a shady oil-company who's resources and personal he used during the caper. Sure, its not a perfect answer to how he managed to conduct his scheme, but it sure is better than having him bribe ONLY ONE other guy to help him steal everything for himself, no matter how skilled that driller was or how greedy Baptiste is. Also, I've always hated that Hanna-Barbara were apparently too lazy or/and cheap to show Arlene's sister unmasked and give her a name, when they probably in a cheap worst-case-scenario could have just given her a common name like "Eliza" or "Susan" or, as in your humorous example "Charlene", and used another model of Arlene's head on the witch's body since we all know they're probably identical twins and that the studio is legendarily cheap when it comes to their productions. Still, great video per usual, Joe, and great to hear you and your family are feeling better from COVID.

Thank you very much for all the kind words! It would have made a lot more sense for Baptiste to be an oilman. @@JoeGoesOver 46:30: That Roger Rabbit joke is funny for bringing up meta humor. Also, I’d like to point out that in the original book that the movie was based on, Roger Rabbit had brown fur (excluding his muzzle and chest) and his pants (except the straps) was yellow. Funny enough, the Green Patch where his tail is on the Disney design, was also used on the knees on the book design.

I read 'Who Censored Roger Rabbit' years ago, but barely remember anything from it. My favorite bit of Roger Rabbit trivia: as a kid, the first comic book I collected was 'Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!'. The eponymous Captain's alter ego was a comic book artist named "Roger Rabbit". After the book came out, DC changed his name to "Roger Rodney Rabbit", then just started calling him "Rodney" on a regular basis. The series only lasted for twenty issues, so it's all moot at this point, but I always remember that bit of knowledge.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I always assumed Charlene's plan WAS to impersonate Arlene since they were twins. No one would know the better, and Charlene wouldn't expect Arlene to come back due to fearing for her life. The only problem is that the townspeople would assume Charlene, now pretending to be Arlene, is "still" possessed by a witch, so that would inevitably come to a head one way or another 🤔

@SomeRandomDutchGuy13 ай бұрын
Something that could have been used as an excuse for Charlene to take over her sister's live, could be the origins of Halloween. As it was originally thought that it was the single night in the year that denizens of the underworld/afterlife could more easily cross to the mortal plain. Thus Charlene could convince the townspeople that "she" was only possessed that single night and that she could "prove it" by having one or several of the townspeople watch over her for several nights. So long as she would then remember to either lock herself in or "get possessed" the following year(s), her story stays consistent and is thus deemed the truth by the superstitious townspeople.

The same voice actors appear so often because at the time, Hanna-Barbera could get them to voice multiple roles while in the booth and not have to pay extra for additional actors. One of the reasons Mel Blanc is so well known isn't because of his talent (which he had, don't get me wrong), but because he negotiated for voice credit in the old Warner Bros. cartoons AND it was cheaper for the studio to use just him to voice everything as much as possible. In fact, one of the reasons there are so few classic female cartoon characters is because whenever a script called for a woman to be cast, often the producers would rewrite the part to be played by a male, so they didn't have to hire anyone else. Hey Joe what's up? Another great video. Yeah it seems like "Charlene's' plan in the witch episode was a little too complicated and convoluted for it's own good. Even had she succeeded she would have likely spent more on legal fees to get the estate than what it was actually worth. And dressing as a witch on Halloween night? And not to mention this: did she really expect to scare her twin sister away in one night? Shoot if I knew I was gonna be haunted for just one night, but then the ghost would go away forever, I'd just tough it out for that one night. The snow beast episode is one of my favorite from season 3 of the Scooby-Doo Show. Although logistically his plan may not have made sense, it would have been worth it, had it succeeded. Like he said, he'd have made millions if not for the gang. But the poor snow beast gets decapitated at the end. Even if it was just a giant mech lol. So while I could totally believe Chief Minook (or however you spell his name) assisting the research, I can't believe that there would be a village far enough north where a "north pole" research facility would be with the more modern technology of the 70's. However, I would believe if the research project was a joint effort where the natives simply created a village alongside the research facility.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm fully recovered and didn't have to wait for my senses of smell and taste to return! So this time around was much easier. I have a hate-hate relationship with school buses. When I was a child, my mother was raising me by herself at the time and was EXTREMELY paranoid and kept me on a short apron string. When we lived in the country, it was a quarter mile walk to the bus stop, but she refused to allow me to do this because she didn't like the idea of me walking over a small bridge. So instead, I was forced to ride the school bus for an entire extra HOUR as our trailer was at the end of the circuit. Bear in mind I was eight at the time and clearly old enough to walk that far, but Mom disagreed. This meant I missed out on SO many afterschool cartoons for the two years we lived in that location. Over four decades [ACE DECADE] later, I'm still just as bitter! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey, Joe! Hope you're recovering well. I had a dark thought; what if Charlene DID think about murdering Arlene. There's a lot that could've happened in the Witch Switch episode (I'm starting to see why this era is a bit underrated compared to the others), but what if the reason she ended up scaring Shaggy and Scooby that night was because she entered in trying to find her sister to whack her and found her friends. It may seem like it may not make a lot of sense, but that little gag could clue us in to the personality of Arlene's twin: ruthless, evil, a bit of jokester and shit head. She reveled in Shaggy and Scooby's fear, but ran away when their screams attracted the others. I'm not saying Charlene and Gar were that smart, nor would the writers have been able to adequately portray this idea, but it's just a theory I have and not a contest to your eval scores. Good video as always.

As far as the law would be concerned, if anything happened to Arlene, her evil twin would have been tried for murder or manslaughter because her acts caused the tragedy to unfold. So it probably doesn't matter whether or not Charlene wanted her sister to die, at least in legal terms. But it definitely would have added some spice to the story if the murder was intentional! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

2:51 This could've been so easily fixed by having Fred say that Baptiste teamed up with "drillers" plural. Then we can assume any number of shady individuals were helping to manage the submarine and prepare the oil derricks. 8:48 Up until recently I just kinda assumed that cultural appropriation was something that had disappeared from the franchise by the time What's New, Scooby-Doo? rolled around but then I decided to re-watch that series and my god did the Wakumi episode not age well. 10:22 Wait until you get to the Tar Monster episode in the next video. Given one thing you've often complained about with this show, one of her lines there about a tar-covered tent is going to drive you up a wall. You know the one. 21:20 For some reason, this made me picture somebody telling Scooby that he's eating their laundry and Scooby just being like "Oh. ...Do you have any more?" and I don't know why. 24:10 I forgot to mention this when I originally wrote this comment, but I sometimes try to guess what score a villain I'm looking forward to seeing will get, or at least land within the ballpark of the score. For the Snow Beast, something about it just screamed "3.5/5" to me and I wasn't sure why. That was ultimately wrong but it came hilariously close to being the case. If the Snow Beast scored half a point higher in any category the guess I pulled out of my ass with no actual basis behind it would've been exactly right.

After thinking about it some more, I'm starting to suspect that getting Arlene killed wasn't actually part of Charlene's plan. If that was the plan, it makes no sense for Mooney to warn her about the approaching mob instead of letting Marley and the others catch her by surprise. Actively helping her get away was the most counterintuitive thing he could have possibly done in that situation. The only explanation I could think of is that they weren't willing to get their hands bloody and merely intended to run her out of town, possibly because they knew their scheme wasn't profitable enough to justify risking murder charges.
@JoeGoesOver3 ай бұрын
When it comes to the law, what a criminal INTENDS to happen matters very little compared to what ACTUALLY happens. Even if Charlene just wanted to run her sister out of town, if the town lynched her, that's all the authorities would care about at the eventual trial. Same reason why the members of Marley's mob can't use "we thought she was a witch" in their defense, either.
@dafilmqueen5563 ай бұрын
@@JoeGoesOver, I can only imagine that the people of that town would all be arrested for attempted murder and be forced to close their town forever. Only Arlene would be allowed free, along with any children the townsfolk had who wouldn’t know their parents were guilty of horrific acts, and even the gang themselves in this case since Scooby was the victim this time around. That’s what you get for trying to recreate a horrific part of human history, especially in an era where you’re more likely to be Twitter cancelled for even suggesting the idea than having an actual lynch mob join you, is what those awful people should hear..

While holding it in my mouth to savor the flavor, I was like, "Wait a minute. I can taste it, but it doesn't taste as good." I started paying attention to other favorite foods and noticed that their flavors just weren't as intense as they used to be. This is particularly poignant as I used to be a supertaster with a ridiculously sensitive sense of smell (I mean, you can SEE how big my nose is in my videos). Now if I take the time to really work my saliva and add a bunch of air to move the food around when I chew, it can improve the flavor somewhat, but that's a lot of work.

For the snow beast: Smashing the village up probably would also have been enough to give the bad guys time to continue their operation. Considering where they are, if they destroy the storage facilities and spaces the villagers have for supplies, food, and the likes, combined with shelter, those villagers would likely be forced by the environment to seek refuge somewhere else. Even so, considering how they have lived there for so long, there likely would be a strong movement to come back and re-establish their hometown. Also, it's funny that the professor decided to invite the gang of teenagers to look into things rather than cough up the dough to hire a private investigator or something. For the witch: Yikes! Those villages were really quick to jump to torture. Wouldn't such a town have its own police or sheriff station? Who would be obliged to try and keep the mob calm and not let them go all Spanish inquisition on people? This is really one time the Scooby Gang should have really called the cops and quick, cause having an angry mob with murder on the mind are not people you can usually just reason to calmness. Though then again...no telling if they would do anything useful or not.

Say what you will about Carl the Stuntman but at least Carl actually tried to menace the gang throughout the episode, he failed miserably but an attempt was still made. All the Witch of Salem did was run around laughing about revenge like a nutjob. Hell, as you said at 43:15 Carl even has a less embarrassing defeat than the Ghost Witch. Sliding down the stairs may not be a dignified way to lose but at least it was the result of Fred pushing a button, the gang purposefully had to do something in order to make it happen. The Ghost Witch just falls into an open grave like a dumbass without any direct involvement from the gang to make her fall in at all. She doesn't even run in, she moves so slowly that it wouldn't be inaccurate to say she walks into it. She's not even the best witch in this series, Witch McCoy might've gotten a bad score but Aggie at least put a lot more effort into making her witch seem magical. She could appear and disappear in a puff of smoke, she made it look like McCoy could turn into a cat, she made it look like she could turn people into frogs, and she even decorated her hideout like a witch's lair in case anybody went snooping there. All the Ghost Witch did was glow and use a puff of smoke trick, the latter of which was also used by McCoy. I don't count the floating because it's only in one scene and is never explained, I didn't even notice she floated at all until you pointed it out. So as far as I'm concerned, if she didn't glow there'd be nothing unique about the Ghost Witch whatsoever. 48:26 Maybe I'm being too harsh but I personally would've given them a lower operation score. In my book, being ruthless only gets you so far when your method of going about it is completely moronic and relies on the townsfolk being even dumber than you are. If Charlene and Mooney had tried to kill Arlene directly I could maybe see it being worthy of getting a slightly higher score, but instead they banked on literally everybody else in town being the most gullible idiots to ever live. As you've probably gathered by now, I'm not a fan of the Ghost Witch and it's the only F Tier episode of The Scooby-Doo Show IMO so it was satisfying to see you tear her stupidity apart. And in the middle of typing that it dawned on me that I haven't given any of your ranking videos a thumbs up. My bad, allow me to fix that real quick. Edit: There we go.

I've always known what cairns are, but I still had to look up that word. To my shame, I first thought you were talking about how Apache Chief makes himself grow big. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Charlene choosing Halloween actually makes a lot of sense, especially if this was around the time of the satanic panic. The people of Old Salem are likely not just supersticious, but given their adherence to the old ways, super religious. In that case, their community would see Halloween as a satanic celebration, and probably ban it in town. And since Halloween is also known as the time of year when the veil between the living and dead are thinnest, having the witch return on Halloween would probably make perfect sense for the town's people.

This episode predated the Satanic Panic by a few years, but it sure did predict what things would be like, didn't it? Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

How far do you think you’ll go, cause i’d love to see you go over the villains of Mystery inc, and what’s new?
@JoeGoesOver3 ай бұрын
I would love to keep going indefinitely, so I would eventually get there. I used to wrack my brains trying to come up with ideas for videos for my channel, which is why I'd be lucky to get one out per month (or every other month). Now that everyone seems to like these Villain Rankings so much, I can concentrate on doing them and not having to worry about the subject! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Well this is after the crossover with the dc universe so we can actually alley this to more possibilities of DC criminals being involved? Yes yes I know this series is based on the idea that there's a reset every time but just because there's a reset for the Scooby, doesn't mean that their team ups with the dynamic duo do not register as wider possibilities in the world. Besides Daphne is the niece of Alfred Pennyworth! Shown on multiple occasions can't wait for your spoiler episode on Batman and Robin the movie especially if you do the massive effort of asking someone to just replace one actress with another in a bat costume I'm sure Sarah will say yes just for the joke! Or another theory: About the Twins is any twins born inside the village must merely proceed to start the ritual known as the Crimson butterfly, Selecting the Older of the Twins to murder the younger of the twin near the ancient burial ground or else the village will be under attack by a portal to the other side? [This is brought to you by fatal frame 2AKA Project Zero II]

Well, Sean, you're certainly living up to your namesake what with all the dark stuff and everything! We'll just have to let future Joe worry about the later DC team-ups! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

Hey Joe, love your videos and can't wait for the rest of the season. I was curious though, will you continue doing villain rankings for Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo? (The show from 1979 that introduced Scrappy, and yes I know you are not a fan of him) I ask because it still follows the typical Scooby-Doo formula. Same question for The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show where it was just Scooby, Shaggy, Scrappy, and Daphne, even if they are only half-length episodes.
@JoeGoesOver3 ай бұрын
I get asked this a lot. I will probably do the first series with Scrappy, but when they drop the Scooby formula of villains and disguises, I'll probably have to skip ahead to the next series. Sadly, this means I'll eventually have to cover 'A Pup Named Scooby-Doo'. I keep whining about that, but to be fair, I thought I'd hate 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies' a lot more than I did, so I'm holding out some hope. Thank you very much for the kind words and for watching!

But yet, Mr McKnight said the town found Sarah Ravencroft's grave marker which is the reason they used her as the Witch's ghost
@JoeGoesOver3 ай бұрын
It's possible they dug up the marker without realizing it and only found it later in a pile of dirt. But yeah, that's a bit of an awkward bit of writing. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@kieranboult51243 ай бұрын
I meant from when you said that women accused of being witches not having graves when you didn't use that same logic for when McKnight said they found Sarah's grave marker

Maybe it's just me, but I thought Charlene's plan was to replace Arleen so she could get her inheritance through identity theft. After Arleen left, Charlene would pretend to be her. If I were redoing this, I would have her accomplice pretend to be a priest so after Arleen left, the priest would pretend to exorcise the ghost from her.

Charlene definitely could have spent some more time thinking things through! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!

In Polish translation, as the end of the episode they explain that Jean-Baptiste wasn't alone and cooperate wit guy(s) from Alaska, so event the official version approved by Hanna -Barbera Inc. agree with you. :)

I wonder if the person responsible for Polish localization was working from an earlier draft of the script?
@poprostuopera2 ай бұрын
@@JoeGoesOver I don't think so, it was made 20 years after the American premiere, but I regard that the translation has to be approved somehow by Hanna-Barbera (Warner Brothers) company ;)

18:40 -- "I just hope it hasn't anything to do with his crazy nephew, Frederick again!" All kidding aside, while not too original, the scale of both the crime and the lengths Jean-Pierre went to in trying to pull it off are what made fans for SCOOBY DOO. I remember years ago an article in an anime fanzine praising CASE CLOSED / DETECTIVE CONAN for being an animated mystery show that whose intricate puzzles made the Mystery Inc. team look like pikers in comparison. Bet he didn't have to deal with fully functional dinosaur robots, though! 46:40 -- There's a KZbin series out there called Batman Contingency Plans by Universal Wisdom, which postulates how Batman would handle any number of potential opponents from across fiction. He recently did Bugs Bunny, and I argued vehemently in the comments that the proposed plan relied too much of variations of Judge Doom's Dip, when another aspect from WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? that would be of great use was that some "toon powers" relied upon the presence of irony such as shown during the handcuffs scene. Therefore, just posting signs pointing out how easily it would be to slip out of a jail cell would inherently cancel any capacity for Bugs or other toon to do so. Doesn't really concern to the SD story happening here, it's just it happened so recently, I felt like mentioning it.😁

'Detective Conan' is one of those old anime/manga mainstays I always meant to check out but never got 'round to. Then again, it's not like I'm not a little bitter than the show has what? 50,000 episodes while some of my favorite anime never got past the first season! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!
