Cilla Black as previously stated worked in the Cavern Club. After Cilla supported The Beatles , John Lennon suggested to their manager Brian Epstein that he sign her up. All though the formal audition was a disaster due to her nerves, Epstein later spotted her giving a much more confident live performance, and her debut single was released three weeks later. Cilla had her own show simply titled Cilla. It aired from January 1968 to April 1976. She worked as a presenter on TV too. Her real name was Priscilla Maria Veronica White. She was appointed OBE for services to entertainment (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). In 2014, she was the recipient of the British Academy Television Awards' Special Award and the first Royal Television Society Legends Award in honour of her 50 years in entertainment. There is a Statue of our Cilla in Liverpool along with statues of the Beatles and Billy Fury. Cilla's funeral took place in her home City of Liverpool. People lined the streets to pay their respects. She was laid to rest, at a private ceremony, in Allerton Cemetery alongside her parents.

People sometimes forget (or increasingly nowadays, never even knew) that Cilla Black was a phenomenal singer back in the day. Most people nowadays remember her as a TV game show hostess, and with her fun personality she was very good at it, but they should look further back at what lifted her to stardom. She was a huge star in the U.K. and had her own weekly TV show where she would sing and have guest performers on as well.

This song was a big hit for Dionne Warwick in the US. Cilla Black's big hit in the US was "Your My World". Another female British singer who doesn't get enough attention by reactors is Petula Clark, who had a string of hits in the 60's; among them were "Don't Sleep in the Subway", "Kiss Me Goodbye", "Downtown".

Cilla, real name Priscilla White, was showbiz royalty in the UK. A working class girl from Liverpool, she got herself a job as a cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club where the up and coming Beatles played. She became part of the British invasion of the US in the mid sixties on the fab four's coat tails. To be honest though she had a successful career in the UK her US record was modest, so you probably haven't heard her much if at all. She was very young, only 20 or 21 in this clip, and her career petered out after the early seventies but she relaunched herself as a TV host, most famously with the game show Blind Date. Sadly no longer with us.

Great reaction. She was the perfect singer for this beautiful Burt Bacharach composition. A really good live performance. As you say “old school”, not only the song’s sentiments but also her delivery even down to the stillness of her poise. She let her voice and the song do the heavy lifting and made it look so damned easy! This was the first record I bought as a six year old in 1964. P.S. the hairdo was very British “swinging 60s” style 😂

Take a look at The Beatles (from the UK) when they first became popular in the U.S. (on The Ed Sullivan Show); or the British singer.Lulu who sang the title song."To Sir With Love" from the movie of the same name starring Sidney Poitier.

Cilla was a hat-check girl in the Cavern when The Beatles were playing there and Paul wrote the theme song for her BBC TV variety show which was the biggest thing on television throughout my childhood There`s a version of that song, Step Inside Love somewhere on KZbin with The Beatles singing it with her. Her version of the classic song Alfie with Burt Bacharach is also worth a watch, it was recorded during the studio sessions and she said she was terrified by Burt.

"Anyone Who Had a Heart" is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. In January 1964, Warwick's original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium and Australia. In the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and New Zealand, Warwick's recording lost out to a version by Cilla Black. Black's single was a UK number-one hit for three weeks in February/March 1964 and was also the fourth best-selling single of 1964 in the UK,[3] with sales of around 950,000 copies.

Cilla was wearing THE hair style of the day - a 'mod ' hairstyle. Many girls wore a similar style based on Mary Quant, a fashion icon of the day, and may have been originated or cut by Vidal Sassoon, the top hairdresser in England. I wore my hair like this then. Recently I had my hair cut in the same way and got many compliments from young women who had not seen it before. Cilla was a fabulous and famous singer with a number of hits . You saw Dusty Springfield on the array of photos. She was famous in the same time with a wonderful voice. If you haven't checked her out, please do so. Regarding the word, "love'. It took women a long while to realise that the word was often actually a substitute for the words and intentions of 'lust and sex' by men ! The saying was - "A man gives love to get sex. A woman gives sex to get love" ! ! !

What I loved about female singers in the 60s is that they all the talent in their voices and very well writen songs unlike these day's where they have to go on stage half naked and surrounded by an onterage of dancers who are also semi naked which I believe makes up for their low grade songs and lack of stage presence. The same quality that Cilia can be found in most of the female singers of her era like Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Aritha Franklin, Lulu, Sandy Shaw, Shirly Bassy, Dione Warwick etc check em out.

Cilla always punched above her weight in vocal power - even as a teenager. A phenomenon way ahead of her time. Check out "Your My World" - a very moving song.

Cilla, I grew up with the later version of her being a TV Show host. She always sang on her TV shows songs that were well known by the UK public in sketches which involved someone getting a special surprise as payment for doing a good deed, for charity or community or just being a good person. It was called Surprise, Surprise and it is currently being used as a meme on Tiktok. Also, at the end of each show, there was a reunion of families who have been parted for whatever reason meeting up again after years. Not a dry eye. She also fronted a dating show called Blind Date, watching them back is super cringe over the fashion sense back then. I learned about her earlier songs by looking them up on the tube. Sometimes I feel she had sold herself short by going down the TV route. Dusty Springfield you mentioned. She is another big UK, and more better known in the US artist. The song of Son of a Preacher Man featured in Quentin Tarantinos Pulp Fiction. Now, back to Cilla, a version of her features briefly in a recent movie horror/thriller called Last Night in Soho singing in a club.

Thank you for putting these Liverpodlian songs up/ This is the sound of my teenage years. There were a few odd groups came out of Liverpool in the 1960's who not only were geat heer in the UK but who smashed the USA. Cilla's friends were a little known group called The Beatles, Notsure if you have heard of them. Sorry I am English and have a certain sense of humour.

That Vidal Sassoon hairstyle was, in 1964, totally on point. Try I've Been Wrong Before; You're My World; Don't Answer Me and, of course, Alfie.

From the Uk. Cilla was along at the same time as - and a close friend of the Beatlles. But if you want the best, listen to her song "Alfi" arrabged by Burt Baccarach - it will make your hair stand on end. Cilla died a few years ago,

Cilla Black was a fabulous talent and was a British icon until she died in 2015. She was the opening act for the Beatles when the Beatles were in their early years in Liverpool. You should listen to Alfie by Cilla. It is very good. It is from the movie Alfie, although Dionne Warwick sang the theme song from the 1966 movie. Unsure why they chose Dionne over Cilla. Both are fabulous. Great reaction, you have excellent taste in older music!!

Cilla was amazing natural singer When back in that day Cilla like many would get on ANY STAGE with just a microphone, the orchestra, conductor and sing to the audience. NO PRANCING around the stage NO dancers NO horrible AUTOTUNE Just stood there singing I think Cilla struggled the last few years of her life with ‘growing old’ Yes she had a fall and that’s what did for her but she wanted no more of the thought 👍 👍 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
