A young Turk is defined as someone who advocates for change. A rebel against the established way of doing things. Basically he was telling this generation (80's) to be themselves and not to let people change them or tell them what to do.

Billy left his home with a dollar in his pocket and a head full of dreams He said somehow, some way, it's gotta get better than this Patti packed her bags, left a note for her mama, she was just seventeen There were tears in her eyes when she kissed her little sister goodbye They held each other tight as they drove on through the night, they were so excited We got but one shot at life, let's take it while we're still not afraid Because life is so brief and time is a thief when you're undecided And like a fistful of sand, it can slip right through your hands Young hearts be free tonight Time is on your side Don't let 'em put you down, don't let 'em push you around Don't let 'em ever change your point of view Paradise was closed so they headed for the coast in a blissful manner They took a two room apartment that was jumping every night of the week Happiness was found in each other's arms as expected, yeah Billy pierced his ears, drove a pickup like a lunatic, ooh Young hearts be free tonight Time is on your side Don't let 'em put you down, don't let 'em push you around Don't let 'em ever change your point of view Come on Billy Woo Young heart, be free tonight Time is on, on your side Billy wrote a letter back home to Patti's parents tryin' to explain He said we're both real sorry that it had to turn out this way But there ain't no point in talking when there's nobody listening, so we just ran away Patti gave birth to a ten pound baby boy, yeah Young hearts be free tonight Time is on your side Young hearts be free tonight Time is on your side Young hearts be free tonight Time in on your side Young hearts gotta run free, be free, live free Time is on, time is on your side Time, time, time, time is on your side Is on your side, is on your side Young heart be free tonight Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, yeah Ooh, ooh, ooh

Rod Stewart wrote the following in his autobiography: "As the 1980s began, I faced musical challenges on a number of fronts. As far as music critics were concerned, I was about as welcome as a hole in a parachute. 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' and the surrounding hoopla had convinced the music writers that I had been led astray forever by the glitter of the disco ball and the Hollywood lifestyle and was irredeemable." Funny stuff!!! 😀

Rod Stewart is a musical chameleon. He has produced so many different sounds, it's impossible to pin him down with any one sound as his "defining" type. What's funny is that his voice itself doesn't change that much -- very signature vocal quality no matter the decade -- but the song choices and musical styles are all over the map. My favorite thing about him is the vitality he brings to his music. He's a survivor in an industry that burns up and burns out thousands of artists. Still having the time of his life and sharing that joi de vivre with his fans. All hail SIR Roderick!

Rod is one of the greats and this song is amazing! A song about a young couple wanting to be together and but feeling like their lives are being crushed by expectations and others pushing back against them so they ran away to be free, to be together and live how they wanted. The song is a rebellious song from the standpoint of being young. That you should enjoy your youth, live free and enjoy it while you can because time is short. In this story, the couple ends up having a kid and so their young freedom is likely to end. Responsibility and care for a baby is now going to be what their lives are about. In the end, while Rod does sing about not letting anyone change your point of view, it is from the point of view of someone young who at the time needs to resist what adults would push on you because this is the time to make those mistakes and learn from life. However, I also feel it speaks to the idea that as you get older that point of view is going to change you on its own. No need for anyone else to do it. Evolve as you grow in this life, not as someone else dictates. Great song! Rod can write and tell a story!

I love how you “get” the lyrics in all of these songs, especially this one. As far as getting your wild out when you’re young, that’s a valid point. But, also, building a life takes building a foundation first, then continuing to build from there, throughout life to have a secure future. Best to build that foundation when you’re young and have that energy to do it.

The songs these bands wrote when they were passionate and hungry for fame.....those are the good songs. I bought albums many times in those days without ever hearing a song...lots of times based on their looks on the covers, lol How many know Ron Wood from the Stones was originally with Rod Stewart and the Faces...or Rod Stewart singing on Jeff Becks album TRUTH ..play AINT SUPERSTITIOUS !
