Austin was so popular at this point. When he wins back the belt at WrestleMania he would go on to set house show records that have never been broken. He was drawing 12000 to over 14000 people a show. Incredible.

This Raw is definitely a special one in my book. The first ever wrestling show I attended live with my brothers. The memories of seeing my hero, Steve Austin, in person. The main event of the show. Fond memories from 1999. Oh yeah thanks for replying to my tweet from the other day. 🙏🏾

My first show was in 1991. The undertaker faced a jobber and put him in a body bag. The ultimate warrior teamed up with LOD to face all 3 members of demolition. Hulk Hogan faced Sgt Slaughter.

I think the biggest thing holding the WCW back in 1999 is “nobody has any idea where to go with anything”. It’s not that the finger poke killed the company. It’s the fact they’ve done almost nothing with it in one month. Raw at this point was firing on cylinders, as all of their characters were peaking and new ones were being added. Were in February now and Brett Hart is wrestling d tier Chris Farley and Bishoff is spending an entire episode cleaning toilets.

I agree. I really always felt that, after the Fingerpoke of Doom, it should have been Goldberg ending the nWo. Signify that the nWo had poked the wrong bear, and now they're done for. But they even wasted Goldberg right after too.

I always regret living where I do, from a wrestling fan standpoint, looking back at what I missed in wrestling. With no pay TV/Cable until the 2nd half of 1999 and just relying on the few wrestling crumbs regular TV gave me in small town Australia, i missed soooo much. Didn't get anything WWF until some point in mid- late 1998 and no WCW at all until some point in 1999. I envy anyone that got to see WCW's peak period as it happened.

Man, I really hope that the WWF has some big plans for this "Higher Power" that the Undertaker's alluding to. Maybe it'll be someone that we haven't seen in a while that could really make the concept work, like Jake Roberts (hopefully he's gotten over his demons by this point). Or maybe it'll be some young & fresh talent who has a lot of potential; there's a guy I've been hearing about named Christopher Daniels lately, you know. Regardless, I'm sure this "Higher Power" is going to be something really cool. I mean, it's not like they'll just reveal it to be, I don't know... Vince McMahon, or something like that, all for a swerve, bro.

Technically, not until they hit under 3. Even during their 83 week run, they would win with 3.5/6. WWF was going through a real slump. At the moment WWF have hit a new popular/creative peak, while WCW is struggling to keep up.

In defense of the Bret Hart/Will Saso match, I have to give Saso a LOT of credit as had this match occurred in McMahon-Land, Saso would have had several spots where he pummeled Bret throughout the match and somehow pinned the Hitman. Prior to the match, Bret asked Saso if he wanted to have some spots to look good, to which Will said absolutely not. In his mind, he couldn't stand some schmuck coming in and outperforming a Master of their Craft, it's completely unrealistic. Ever the professional, Bret told Saso not to do anything without Hart being there to guide him through the match. Where was this mindset when Jay Leno beat up Hulk Hogan last year?

From this I’ve got an observation and a question. My observation, there really is too many guys in the nwo, Flair was put in charge of wcw and the end result, he’s been beaten repeatedly and left face down in the ring, his son got stalked and beat up (not in that order), his mate Piper won the us title when one of the horsemen couldn’t even win a title shot and his attempt to bring back the tag championship has been so undermined that we had two thirds of it redone in this show. What connects all this, the NWO, who simply did what they wanted when they wanted because there’s so many of them, how are fans supposed to hope for any other outcome but the NWO wins if that’s all they ever do. My question, which do you prefer, shorter runs with the championship as two guys take it from one another back and forth until a final outcome, or long reigns where the champion holds onto the title for four or five months at least. In 98 the title changed hands four times I think, now in the opening months of 99, it’s already matched that number, but you have to admit it’s made raw must see.
