WCW Nitro goes head to head with WWF Raw in another Monday Night television ratings battle! The date is 4.29.96, the WWF have been leading the way in the ratings recently as WCW hasn’t been building to anything significant on pay per view.
This week, Nitro is taped. The WCW show also broadcasted 1 hour earlier than normal due to a NBA game airing on TNT. Eric Bishcoff and company have a big surprise in store this week though and it all goes down in the main event, Ric Flair vs The Giant for the WCW Heavyweight Championship.
WWF Raw is live this week on the USA Network, it’s the night after In Your House: Good Friends, Better Enemies, and Vince McMahon is already looking ahead to the next pay per view. Shawn Michaels begins his rivalry with The British Bulldog on this episode of Raw, a rivalry that also includes Diana Smith. The Ultimate Warrior also has his debut WWF Raw match this week.
00:00 - Good Friends, Better Enemies Results
03:45 - Harlem Heat vs Sting & Lex Luger
06:16 - Mankind in action
09:25 - Fire & Ice on Nitro
11:13 - Steve Austin vs Scott Taylor
11:24 - Camp Cornette / HBK / Ric Flair promos
15:18 - Steve Regal and Fit Finlay's Parking Lot Brawl
18:50 - The Main Events

Sting has been one of my favorite wrestlers since I started watching, by that time he was doing the crow gimmick which I love, but over recent years the more I see of "Surfer" Sting, he really grown on me. Due to that character being not so illusive, there was more crowd interactions and he worked as more fast paced style. He was a perfect gimmick Babyface!!

i couldn't agree more, Sting but more specifically "Surfer" Sting has been one of my top 3 favorite wrestlers since the first time i ever saw him on TV back in like 1989\1990. His other versions are cool but there's just something about early 90's Sting that clicked with me So Much that i would have liked anything he did character-wise after that point. i still have some old WCW trading cards from when Sting won the title his first time, i was so young i can't even remember how i got the cards in the first place. 😄👍

Watching this era back again, WCW and Bischoff come across as incredibly vindictive. Vince and the WWF barely even mention WCW apart from the Billionaire Ted skits which Vince stopped when told to by the USA network. You even see WWF security telling people with anti WCW signs to put them away. Meanwhile Bischoff opens most Nitros spoiling the WWF raw tapings or just outright bashing the WWF and it’s talent.

@seanabbins5481
@seanabbins5481 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichSmithson But those Billionaire Ted skits were really below the belt, worse than anything WCW said about the WWF. Remember too, the WWF was the established brand and they had less to gain by mentioning the underdog brand. (One of the main points of the billionaire Ted skits was to convince people that WCW wasn't an underdog brand.) WWF had a long standing policy of not acknowledging NWA, AWA, WCW, UWF etc. They felt those companies were beneath the more upscale Sports Entertainment they were selling.

@attiepollard7847 The irony of your statement is that Randy wanted his last fued in then WWF to be with this young kid who he thought had a lot of talent. The guy was Shawn Michaels of course. But Vince didn't want to do it. Macho wanted it to be a long fued. I think Vince was just tired of Macho or something. But anyway, WCW didn't appreciate Macho Man, so he wasn't pushed to be that here. Edit: I remember what happened was McMahon only wanted Randy as a commentator, but Savage thought he could do more.

Regal and Finlay had some good matches during this period. Not sure if you guys in Europe were able to see much of them or their style in the 90's, but it was fresh for us in the US. The international element of WCW during this period was a nice feature that gave the undercard freshness and diversity. Finlay and Regal were both very good at this time.

Memory can be a strange thing. If you had asked me before this series started, there are a lot of things I thought I remembered from the early Monday night war period that I would thought have been a major component by April 29, 1996. Where is Raven's flock? The luchadores? The Cruiserweight title? Where is Ken Shamrock? Farooq? I suppose all of this is coming, but I would have thought that they started in the early months of Monday Night wars. In any case, I remember being very enthusiastic about Monday night wrestling by this period, and was asking my boss to have every Monday night off. It was so much better than what wrestling had been prior to this.

Davey Boy didn't like the Diana storyline, because it meant that she was out on the road with him, so he couldn't cheat on her

Does this kind of tell you that maybe Davy; was a pushover? he changes his mind about a storyline involving his wife and then in 1997 he doesn't even protest the finishing of a match dedicated to his dying sister

Watching that parking lot brawl when this aired live, it just felt real. The Regal vs. Finlay feud really had me hooked at the time. You couldn't see through anything they did and when they worked together, it was great. It didn't even matter that neither of them were babyfaces or that we didn't get much of a backstory about why they hated each other so much. Their work told the story.
