It was nothing like 20g. Say 45mph and 50ft radius of turn: that's under 3g. Weak wing. Pity because it was a nice flight.

Been flying for years. Started when I was 16 and flew rc before that. I fly privately and own 3 of my own aircraft, one of which is a helo. I don’t fly rc that much but I own this exact rc plane and can say for sure they aren’t built to handle this. They aren’t built to the same quality of the real ones. The people putting these things together really don’t care. That was my point. It has nothing to do with the type of plane or my experience, it has to do with the quality of the model. The jets are designed for this stuff, these planes aren’t. Same reason you can break an rc crawler truck by bashing it but if you get a 6s basher designed for that it will handle almost everything you throw at it.

So many people saying he was flying to rough and was surprised it was hanging on as long as it did is a joke! That wing should NOT have broke, its hard to tell but it actually kind looks like there was a split second of aileron flutter before the wing failure, I fly my hangar 9 108” cub like crazy and it take everything, that should not have broke like that, there could of also been some hangar damage or improperly glued joints that failed

My 51 inch carbon cub turns on a dime. An amazing plane. In fact I thought it would be too much for me to handle. Now anything I get will be in the 48 in. To 50in. They handle beautifully.

I have a 1/4 sig cub that never had any issues at all, no matter how it was flown. 1/3 balsa USA cub with a dle111 in it that I've never had a failure on.... horizon is good at producing short term use planes. Almost every ARF I have ever had has been stripped, fixed or strengthened, and recovered. For a plane that expensive, designed for the dle 222, that kind of failure shouldn't happen.

In full size Cubs we fly. VNE is strictly maintained. Obviously observed VNE in RC aircraft is not.

He wasn't doing anything that airframe should've been able to handle. He didn't do anything that would cause excessive stress like outside loops, high speed snap rolls etc..

@@glenwhatley7366 I totally agree with that observation. There must have been some kind of incorrect construction right at that juncture of the wing to have caused this. A wing should be built strong enough with the original components if done correctly to handle that much stress and much more. At least in my opinon.

Diving with power with that type of wing is a good way to induce control surface flutter which will destroy the airframe.

@@glenwhatley7366 Yep, not over stressed, just another RTF that was not built by someone who meticulously makes sure that all the joints are glued well, and adds reinforcement in key places such as high stressed areas where the struts join. Given how they brag up carbon with these planes, a small rod or even spar laminated to the rear of the LE should do the job. I don't buy ARF/RTF, and I stress the heck out of my models with no failures.

Impressed it lasted that long, pilot obviously forgot what he was flying. Lost my first Cub thanks to a warped wing flip on take off, second attempt an unintended loop and hand clap. Hope to have more success with a scale RC boat I'm building now.

Not surprised at all, at the tragedy which transpired. Any sensible pilot with common sense wouldn't subject this type of non-sport aircraft, whether full-scale or not, to such G-forces and expect the aircraft to survive.

Doing an engine run-up and restraining the aircraft by the wings didn’t help the situation either. Lots of stress on the wing root attachments. Gotta love people who have no clue about physics and material strenght. Btw I’m a certified aircraft mechanic and have flown rc airplanes over 30 years

Yeah I saw the stress bend the wing back a little and its alignment is off. It only takes a tiny amount of misalignment and poof biff crunch. I've left my own craters too so I really can't be too judgmental. Stuff happens. A true sportsman laughs it off even if they're crying inside.

Heh, been there and done that. With R/C, it's tons of fun to pull that stick (In my case, to the point of hearing the monokote flap in the wind!), but sometimes it's just a bit too much. :P I had one .25 sized kit with my repurposed heli motor where the wings failed, pulled the ENTIRE radio kit out with it and as it's last act of hatred, pulled the throttle wide open. So, my airplane turned from an airplane into a nitro/methanol powered VERY angry lawn dart. That thing must have been turning 30,000 RPM before it hit the ground. Full throttle, straight down from many hundreds of feet. But what was most shocking about that was just HOW fast it went from EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! to nothing. It hit the ground so hard I had to get a shovel to pull the engine out. I rebuilt what was left and flew it again though! Engine needed a new main needle and such and the airplane was probably twice as heavy afterwards, but it flew again! :P I also had a heli that did the same thing. 'Cept in that case, radio failure. That rotorhead was probably 3500 RPM when I said "Watch this!" (Yes, for real. Ugh). I was going to do a full collective climb out to show the explosive performance of that unit. Well, it was explosive alright. The POT in the radio (sensor that tells stick position) failed and the wiper went off the end so if you pushed the stick to the top and applied pressure, it THOUGHT it was suddenly all the way down. That heli hit the ground so hard it was like it was full of dynamite. It was a total write off. Hence my catchphrase of "Crash, thousand bucks.". :/

I have freezed the momment of failure time and time again and I only have one question. When your recovered the plane was the prop still in one piece...? Because it looked as though the prop blades split and one of the blades went through the wing...! I am by no means any Dick Tracy but I just found it weird for the wing to have split the way it did because at the time you where almost climbing or geting ready to climb at that point of failure.. And if you freez frame and watch it, there is a black object just to the rear of the tail section and looking at the engine I see only one blade or what looks to be one blade... I know that this accident is not something you would like to revisit again but it sure looks weird.. I pulled this video up while thinking about buying this model and just took interest into the accident as I did not want to invest money into something that would look like this during a flight...

I have seen plenty of RC pilots at the local field who insist on flying scale planes in a fantastic way (fantastic as in fantasy, away from reality). One guy flies a Freewing B2 bomber as if it were a pattern plane (loops, split Ss, Cuban 8s, inverted flight). Another flies a small T-28 as if it were a 3D plane). I see large warbirds that attempt to take off as if they were IMAC planes. Others bank and yank scale EDF jets as if they were hot racing planes, to the point that they flex the wings way too upward, as if about to break. I don’t know what’s the point of flying planes in a way they were never designed for. This is asking for an eventual structural failure and a crash. Just today there was a pilot who had not flown an EDF jet before and even with assistance, he kept making maneuvers that were over stressing the wing-the wings were flexing upward a lot with the high speed, tight turns he was doing. Pure bank and yank, with no finesse or smoothness.

I've been flying models and full scale for many years. There were no high stress manuvers that I saw. I doubt anything went above 2 1/2 g's. I agree that this is not an aerobatic plane but the wing should not have broken... It was a bad design or wasn't built correctly... run ups holding the wings has been going on for ever.

@@rudyg720 From 30yrs of flying R/C my best guess is aileron flutter. It will make a wing explode with little pieces falling just like happened here. Flutter can be incredibly hard to predict. It's a product of wing resonance coupling with the aileron not just aileron only issue as is assumed.

There’s something called inertia that affects all objects, including nice H9 Carbon Cubs. With this ws and these tight turns, like if it was a funfly, and considering that the model is an Almost Ready To Crash, I’m surprised that the video lasted that long. BTW, the first turn to align the lane for takeoff was incorrect; the pilot did it towards the pits rather than away from them. Safety red flag 🚩

Just wondering WHY anyone would like to fly a J-3 Cub model like that? What was the point? Show how clueless one can be? Even it is possible to install an overkill engine on an airframe like that, it really doesn't mean it is a must. I miss good old times, when we had to build our models from scratch. The idiots would always eventually run out of their models. And the peace would prevail at the RC-field again.
