Not that I haven’t done the same thing, but that’s why preflight and simple control surface check are so important! You did an amazing job not panicking, staying with it, and getting it back on the ground without a catastrophic impact. Your skills are amazing. 👍🏻

WOW!!!...that aileron reversal mistake was exciting !!!!!....were you having to fight against the AS3X stabilization during that reversal also?.. anyway, you did a nice job on getting it back down and a lesson learned I am guessing ......great side by side review of these two planes and although I would really like to get an Evolution......the Timber X BNF was on sale , so I grabbed it for a lot less .....QUESTION: I am not exactly a beginner , but I am still somewhat a new pilot...I also practice a lot on the simulator ( RF ) ........do you think with 50% rates and 30 % expo and adding the wing slats, it tames the Timber X enough for a newer pilot ..should I try to modify the gear in someway, as I have heard the mains are weak..... any helpful advise / tips for my maiden would be greatly appreciated .................thanks again
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 жыл бұрын
Mistake is definitely a nice way to put it. Utter stupidity is what I personally call it. I just forgot to preflight check when I should have. It's always the time you think you don't need to do it that you need to do it the most. I wouldn't fly the Timber X with slats - it won't tame it down for flying, it'll make it feel sluggish in the air. Reducing rates also won't help much. You're better off using high rates with high levels of expo (50%+) to tame down the surfaces so moving in the midpoints of the sticks doesn't cause you to overcontrol. This is all IMO, though - you'll have to experiment with what kind of dead zone you like on your transmitter using expo.

How strong would you say the turbo timber evolution's wheels are? ive seen reviews saying they break easy and all the parts are on backorder
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 жыл бұрын
The wheels are pretty strong. The gear wire is the only weak point. Don't land like a meteor and you probably won't have any issues at all. It takes a lot of force to break the wire.

On rich's evo, we moved the esc as far forward as it would go, & added a tad of hot glue in each side just enough to make it stay put. Originally, ppl were using humongous 5000mah batteries & the air flow TO the esc was blocked from the bigger packs. Once everyone seen that, & went down to a 3000mah or less, (& moved their esc's forward), overheating stopped being an issue. Also the spinners dont let a lot (enuf, IMHO!), air thru the fuselage. Temps go down 60+ degrees without the outer spinner on (WE have tested that!), BUT theres gotta be a better way to get airflow, & keep the spinner. Gotta be.
@old-rcplane-phart
@old-rcplane-phart 2 жыл бұрын
But, moving the esc forward, & using a smaller mah pack, DOES cool the esc better than the stock location.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 жыл бұрын
In my case I removed the two foam blocks connecting the fuselage together to add additional airflow routes, then glued one of the blocks back down in front of the tray and affixed the ESC to the block using double-sided tape. I'll go over all of this soon!
@howiedenton2709
@howiedenton2709 2 жыл бұрын
After melting down the stock 800kv motor on my TT Evo’ I followed the HH advice to move the esc all the way forward. I replaced the dead motor with a 900kv unit from a Night Timber and added the IC3 6 inch extension lead to the esc IC3 connector. My solution to gain more airflow over the esc was to add venting to the black hood section of the battery hatch. For this I took a $6 ASW-17 air intake (FMMEB108) spare part I had and cut the hatch hood to accept it flush and glued it in. It’s worked great, never once overheated again, and looks kinda cool too.

Dear Jon. liking your content a lot, but I started to take it with a grain of salt. You are definitely a Timber Fanboy. My Timber X got Turbo Timber Wings and shortened snout - flimsy motor mount broke and was cut - and landiing gear ripped out on the first bushplane landing so I placed the mount for an old Bixler landing gear - with Timber Wheels - so now I call it "Timberstein" and I am just not touching it... Timbers are becoming more and more overweight, which cannot be compensated with power and gyros. But they are designed by people with "full size" pick-up trucks, while the rest of the world drives normal sized...

Look Jon, you are a great pilot and really know your stuff. Looking back at my comment, I stand by it. Next to my not very much flown Timberstein sits a modified Multiplex FunCub OG with Original MPX 3536-840KV Motor (132g) + 30A ESC. Adressing your criticism: It sits on Carbon Fiber Landing gear and some Multiplex 4 in 1 connectors to make Wing-Assembly a breeze. On a 13x6.5 APC Thin E or a same size Carbon Prop from Aero Naut it is just easy floaty and taking it all. A Bigfoot is my beater-plane. Power-system was updated to 3542- 800kv (135g) and 40Amp ESC. I use a sturdy 12x8 glow engine prop from APC. This thing is abused almost daily and takes it all - rain and landing everywhere- Its not pretty, but proud. Twisted Hobbies just came out with an EPP Slow Flyer-like SC-Piper, which is like a prettier, smaller and less hyperactive Jabberwocky. This is my 400g take-off weight fly in tight spaces 3D-Trainer. On a windy day it just hovers above you, my five-year old snatches it out of the air, when he can... Timber is just too big and not appealing... I got some sand EPO-color and will give it a safari bushplane look, as the large Turbo Timber wing already is green and brown-spotted... I will do s.th. like a bomb door as well, as it is so huge on the inside and my boy loves to put GI Joes in everything... Thinking Paratroopers... I promise I will fly the full-size Cub then!

Hi again Jon, I wanted to ask for your take on what the slats actually do for the turbo timber evo. I'm a new pilot and noticed this timber is pretty heavy and you can't do a tight turn on approach at slow speeds (like I could on my first plane, the apprentice S2).. Hoping that the slats will actually help with that, but again, I don't know what the slats do and can't find any info on it. So, hoping you can help explain how they change the flight experience! I'm still flying in safe mode btw. Thx
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 2 жыл бұрын
Slats are supposed to help keep airflow moving smoothly over the wing at higher angles of attack. In practice, while they do help fly the plane slower and at higher angles of attack, they interfere with the roll and also tend to introduce some adverse yaw characteristics to the model. I highly suggest not flying with them. If you want slow flight, pull the flap servos out, then set the radio for 150% up and down travel on the flaps. Reposition the flap servo arms to pull the flap against the wing at 150% up, and so that it extends fully at 150% down. You'll get way more flap travel and it'll help with slow flight so long as you're holding thrust.

It works out well - because you get to see what these models can really do, and I don't have any disincentive to be truthful about their capabilities. If I get to a point where companies sponsor me, my primary requirement is going to be keeping the channel identical to how it is now. I'm not interested in giving up my autonomy.
