@shiningphantasy1393 Жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the one on first down from the Falcons 20 yard line in the second quarter with the Vikings up 17-7, well that was the true first domino to fall which led to the Vikings demise. If Moss makes that catch the Vikings go up 24-7, and at that point it is unlikely that they do anything overzealous on offense for the remainder of the half since they got the ball first to start the third quarter, so the strip sack probably would have not occurred, and the game could have easily been a blowout. It was not an easy catch but one that Moss certainly could make more often than not; I'm surprised that this video overlooked that moment.

@SmugTomato4 жыл бұрын
The weirdest thing about the 1998 Falcons is that you would never think that they went _14-2_ that season. The way that they're talked about, you'd think they were a gimmicky middle of the road team that got hot at the right moment, finished like 9-7 or maybe 10-6 as a wild card and just kind of gonzo'd their way into the Super Bowl before getting throttled by a better team, with the highlight obviously being this massive upset. The reality is that they were a powerhouse that just happened to get overshadowed by two teams with bigger names. I don't think any other team as dominant as they were has ever gotten this type of treatment. Even the 2016 Falcons, who finished 11-5, are still seen as a very good team that blew a lead against the GOAT QB. No one thought they were just some fluke. It's a little bit tragic in its own right, because they weren't just some random team, they were really, really good.

There's some twisted irony in the Falcons' Super Bowl the next week. To set the stage, I grew up in Atlanta, suffering almost nonstop humility with all 4 major sports teams, from my childhood in the 60s. This was it! The Super Bowl! I was already glued to the screen for pregame festivities. So here it is: in the starting player introductions, one by one, the John Elway Broncos trotted out from the sideline through the line of cheerleaders, all business, all football. Maybe a wave at the crowd at most. But when the Falcons were individually announced, some came strutting and dancing like those slow speed touchdown celebrations you now see. They would stop and turn and twist their ass in a strutting dance. And I shook my head, and said to my father, "They have no idea what this is. They don't know where they are. They're going to be destroyed. They just don't 'get' it!" And indeed, Elway proceeded to annihilate them. Irony, that is was their ego that crushed them after their great season and the conference championship. Then of course, they STILL didn't learn, when they later got another chance in the dance against the Patriots. Their ego again kicked them in the ass, in the most embarrassing choke in sports history. Can I call it ironic, that after this glorious win they shot themselves in the ass? And established a tradition of doing so?!
@Bill_Woo4 жыл бұрын
Of course, the strutting dance was the "Dirty Bird." But the point remains...

@@Bill_Woo The choke job against New England I'm still pissed off about. WhyTF...just why...would you strut around acting like you won the damn game with a quarter left?! This is Tom Brady we're looking at, they don't think he can help make a comeback?! And then it happened. I just feel so bad for Matt Ryan (now with Indianapolis) and Julio Jones (last check he was with Tennessee, I believe), they should have gotten a ring. Instead they got to share memories of the greatest SB choke job ever!! As for getting our butts kicked by Denver, as well as John Elway played the real MVP in the game was Terrell Davis. There was nothing we could do to slow him down, he trucked the hell out of us. Had the Vikings won the NFC championship game that year I'm not convinced they'd be able to beat the Broncos.

A couple notes after this game: 1. The Falcons would get demolished in the Super Bowl against the Broncos 34-19. 2. Gary Anderson did not shake off this missed in the 1999 season when he kicked for only 63%. 3. The Vikings would get back to the NFC Championship shortly after this season in 2000 but get blown out 41-0 against the Giants. To this day, the Vikings have not been to a Super Bowl since 1976. 4. The 1999 Falcons could not rekindle their 1998 magic and would go 5-11. 5. Randall Cunningham would not sustain his magic in the 1999 season by getting benched for Jeff George and then subsequently released. 6. The Vikings would end up drafting a big armed qb named Daunte Culpepper in the 1999 offseason. 7. Jamal Anderson broke the record for most carries in a season in 1998. Unfortunately, he would tear his ACL in 1999 and was never the same running back again.

Yet the following week Atlanta asserted its position at the top of the stack in loser-dom, because of their ego following this. Elway crushed them after they strutted arrogantly onto the field. As that goes, later, 25 points was no accident. Atlanta has a tradition of failure. People joke about the Browns, but the true factory of sadness, Atlanta, has battled to tie Newark, and is slightly ahead of Spokane in major sport championships. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._cities_by_number_of_professional_sports_championships And in context - I grew up there, longing for Joe Torre and Hank Aaron to win it all, or Steve Bartkowski or Deion, or the Hawks, or the Flames ... indeed, a factory of sadness.

@@breiter4697 a few reasons: 2009 was the Vikings' last real shot for that era, and in my opinion a better one. The window hadn't completely closed on the Dennis Green era. 98 was Moss' rooke season, Carter was still playing at a HOF level, and if you plugged in any above average qb in that system, it would still click. Considering how suspect the defense was, I have my doubts we would've held up against Elway and Co. Brett Favre was without question the heart and soul of the 2009 Vikings. You had studs like AP and Percy, but without Favre it just doesn't work. We all knew when Favre was done we were done. For a team that went 14-2, the 09 Colts were a complete joke.
