This was from around 2015, only 2 yrs after being founded by Miku Kobato, rhythm/vocals (pigtails). Previously she had been waitressing in a maid cafe for several years and singing in a little known idol trio. But what she really wanted was a heavy ass band that dressed in cute outfits that would surprise people. Hence the maid theme. She recruited Kanami Tono from a KZbin video of her playing guitar. Kanami knew and played with Akane Hirose in another acoustic band and brought her onboard. Akane brought her music school friend MISA (yes, all caps) to dominate on base. Miku chose Saiki as the main vocalist from an audition but purposely neglected to tell her about wearing maid outfits until it was too late! At this time, Miku asked Kanami to teach her to play guitar so the music would be heavier and more multi-layered and textured. All the ladies are absolute beasts on their instruments, Miku being the only one not formally trained but with Kanami as her sensei she may be even more so. Kanami is the main composer with Akane, drummer, assisting with arrangements while Miku, pigtails, writes the lyrics. She’s a little weird- she thinks she’s part pigeon as Kobato means “small pigeon”. And Kanami is absolutely enthralled by Saiki even after 5 years she sneaks photos of her on her phone! This is the first band I've spent money on in 20 years. Within hours of finding them nonetheless. I've been playing drums since the 80s and this girl is the first drummer to inspire me to learn double bass pedals. Yes, she is good. The whole band is. And YES, she plays like that in every song. Check out Maximum The Hormone. The drummer from MTH is her inspiration (another woman). You can get a little better look at her from the live videos. She always has this incredible smile on her face as she destroys the drums. Its amazing. If you are in LA, the ticket scalping sites still have tickets for the Nov 9th show.

Band Maid is: Saiki Atsumi - Vocals Miku Kobato - Guitar/Vocals Kanami Touno - Ld Guitar MISA - Bass Akane Hirose - Drums Band formed at the end of 2013 when Miku. Miku had been working at a maid cafe after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the idol world. She decided she wanted to create a band that played "cool" sounding music while dressing up in the maid outfits that she thought were cute from working at the cafe. She discovered Kanami from videos she had posted of her playing guitar cover songs; contacted through the internet, after meeting Miku, Kanami decided to give it a try. Kanami knew Akane from doing session work together, so Akane joined the group. Akane knew Misa because they both went to the Tokyo School of Music. Originally, the band was a four piece, and some of their early songs have just Miku on vocals. At some point shortly after forming, Miku decided her voice was too "bright" sounding for the type of music they were making. Saiki was represented by the same management company, Platinum Passport in Shibuya, where she was working towards a career in singing and dancing. Miku had heard her singing, so invited Saiki to try out for the band, and she joined to make Band-Maid a five piece. Originally, Miku didn't tell Saiki about the maid costumes; Saiki is said to have a "princess-like" personality, and Miku was afraid that Saiki would decline the invitation if she knew. Miku was right, because Saiki was originally very unimpressed with the costumes, but stuck with it anyway. If you watch the video for Thrill, you should thank that song for the band still being around. They had already released an EP that didn't get much traction. In one interview, Miku said that if Thrill had not been successful, the band probably would have broken up. Thrill was released, and the music video started getting lots of hits from international viewers on youtube. It was shared as a Facebook video, and supposedly got 4M views in a short period of time on that platform, though I haven't found first hand documentation of that (the youtube video lagged well behind that early on). Since that time, they've played in the USA twice, Mexico twice, and had two small European tours. They've also played in Taiwan and Hong Kong, I believe. They're playing two gigs in the USA and going to Europe again in November of this year.

Real Existence is the 3rd track on that EP - New Beginning, where the record company allows the Maids to abandon the musical style of the first album in favour of hard rock. Thrill, Freezer (what a song!!) and Real Existence are the first three tracks. Glorious!! Nine tracks of rock greatness, including Don't Let Me Down (stratospheric pop punk) coming in at track 8. Every song is a banger. And 11 years further on, Band-Maid still have not released one bad song. Best and most talented rock band ever, imho.

Band-maid is really good live. Saiki's voice does suffer a bit in an actual live performance (as opposed to a produced live recording), but not so much that you would complain. The energy level live, though, is really good. And Saiki is an absolute queen up on stage; she was born to be up there.

All 3 are excellent ones to check out. Their music videos are great, but the band really shines live, like in those three. My order would go Play, Moratorium, Puzzle. They are all really good, but love me some MISA on the bass.

I always have to smile to the initial reaction to Band Maid. You can pretty much call up any song they do and it will sound like if it's off a greatest hits album. They are better live than in the studio. I first heard them on a Static Age reaction (Dice) and have been hooked ever since. If you want another really good video release check out the live stuff with good sound. They also do a bit of acoustic stuff which really shows their versatility. I really enjoyed your reactions. ONSET live. It's an instrumental that might really blow your socks off. Yes, the drummer plays like that all the time. You haven't heard a good bass or guitar solo yet. Have fun.

totally agree about the drumming.. this MV was also my first exposure to the band. soon as Akane started going off on the drums i knew i'd stumbled upon some legit shit. if you keep listening to their stuff.. keep an ear tuned in to the bass too bad you discovered em just now.. they're playing two shows in Cali in November(both sold out).. can only hope they're back again next year

The best reactions are the ones where you're just "WTF AM I LISTENING TO?" but can't say anything because your too blown away. Akane reminds me of Taylor Hawkins. Watch Akane. The way she's always smiling and the intensity of her slamming the drums (I'm not comparing the two style-wise) just like Hawkins used to (RIP). I can't be the only one.

IMHO, Band-maid is the pinnacle of rock at the moment, they have great technical skill and are entertaining. The lead singer (Saiki) has a very powerful voice and sings with a lot of emotion, the lead guitarist (Kanami), the bassist (Misa), and drummer (Akane) are all top tier musicians and they put on a show. Miku (rhythm guitar) founded the band, writes most of their newer stuff, and does a great job as the face of the band during live shows. This is "early" Band-maid (~2015) and it only get's better. I don't think they have any filler songs and they take a lot of influences from their role-models and they vary up the style a lot so they don't get stale. As a lot of people below have commented, there are some excellent songs out there, I really like "I Can't Live Without You," "Puzzle," "Choose Me," and "Onset."

Somebody should mention the elephant in the room. Babymetal, likely the most successful Japanese band with foreign audiences. Three cute girls singing and dancing in front of one the best metal bands.
