Watching several interviews and listening to several interpretations of the same songs, I understood something: every time a member leaves the band, the one who replaces does not try to imitate his/her style, in Nightwish. I noticed this in the case of Tarja / Anette (explained by Floor in one of her first interviews after entering Nightwish), I also noticed this since Marco left, in a few songs from the virtual concert. Each of them has its own unique voice, and no attempt has been made to duplicate this uniqueness by those who followed. It seems to me an honest approach. One more thing: I understand that the fans upset by Tarja's departure reproached the band for choosing Anette because she was beautiful in the first place, so in this video they chose a team of beautiful girls instead of all the band members :)

Anette's studio work is really good. I'm not really a fan of her live performances, but both albums with Anette are awesome. This song was Tuomas' message to Tarja. He also had a message for her husband on that same album. Even more agressive and angry lyrics, packaged with the heaviest music Nighwish has done so far. It's called 'Master Passion Greed' and it's sung by Marko. They have never played it live, but there is a nice fan-made video around kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJzMk2Oaft-cjs0 Of course there's also 'The Poet And The Pendulum' on this album in which Tuomas gives an insight into his state of mind after everything that went down with Tarja.

Definitely a yes to MPG. This is the one song that shows very clear that the decision to fire Tarja was unanimous. It's pure rage that grows and grows, yet still stays a great symphonic metal song.

What's the old saying, don't be the guy who replaced the legend, be the guy that replaced the guy who replaced the legend. This holds true here. The biggest difference between the three singers comes down to range of tone and versatility. Taria and Annette were at opposite ends of soprano. Floor Jansen can do what the previous two did and everything in between.

I've loved Nightwish almost from the beginning. I was young and very sad when Tarja was fired. When Dark Passion Play came out I was almost shocked. It was so different from what I was used to, but at the same time it was very Nightwish. And so good !! The two albums with Anette on vocals are for me the best. I come back to them again and again. With Floor came a new era. She has sung on two good albums. Now they are working on their 10th studio album. I'm so excited about what's coming.🤘

Everything you said about Anette is spot on. She was placed in a rough position, but one she surely couldn't pass up. And she received (and continues to receive) a lot of unwarranted hate. As others have pointed out, she wasn't nearly as good live as Tarja or Floor. She's said as much herself in interviews. She feels much more comfortable in the studio and it shows. In fact, I might even venture to say her studio work is better than Tarja or Floor, in that she really knows how to harmonize with herself and deliver a melody. It's also worth mentioning the impact she had on the band. On the previous 5 albums, Tuomas was writing with Tarja's powerful operatic voice in mind. Anette's strength is hooks. She's Swedish, the country that's mastered pop music. So his writing changed to accommodate, and even though her stay with the band was relatively short, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are right up there with their best. Any Nightwish fan will tell you as much. Unfortunately, the band really shines live and Anette couldn't really deliver. That being said, I'd recommend checking out her new band: The Dark Element. They're also a symphonic metal band, but a bit more "poppy". Jani Liimatainen writes songs that fully utilize Anette's strengths and they're worth a listen. Side note (apologies for the rambling!), if you're looking for more Anette with Nightwish, I'd recommend "The Escapist". It's a B-side that never made it on to an album (which is wild to me) and is perhaps her best showing with the band. Cheers from Boston

I saw documentary called End of the era, in there everyone is backstage including the "Navajo Indian" dude and you could see that everybody was tense. Because they knew this could be THE last show. Emppu tried to throw some jokes so the guest star wouldn't feel unwelcome or anything. But Tuomas, Jukka ,Marco were all just silent and in their own thoughts. It was little grinch to see, but thank goodness all worked out better in the end.

It's really cool to have someone with your radio experience check out this song. It's not the only song on the album that could be considered perfect for the radio while also uniquely Nightwish. Honestly, Anette had it tougher than anyone. It's fine not to like her vocal style or to think she needed to improve her live performance ability but every single thing about her from her voice to her appearance and aesthetic to her attitude and personality was absolutely ripped to shreds by a subset of the "fanbase". Slowly but surely she got better and better and my favourite album ever, Imaginaerum, was done with her brilliant vocals but unfortunately I don't think she ever got to fully realise her potential with Nightwish. Thankfully nowadays she is busy living her best life doing musical side-projects part time while working as a nurse.

The third part of the trinity of anger is "Master Passion Greed", perhaps Nightwish's angriest and heaviest song and directed toward Tarja's husband. Never been played live and never will. Hi Eric. I believe it can be quite a handicap going into this song withou hearing Tarja first. I hope you'll still be able to appreciate their original era with Tarja without any prejudice. I'd certainly recommend watching some of the older hits with Tarja before diving into the Poet and the Pendulum. For the first impression I'd probably recommend Sleeping Sun, possibly contrary to popular opinion that is you should watch Phantom of the Opera. But Phantom is a cover, but I think that listening to the Nigtwish'es original song would hit differently with you. So yeah. Sleeping Sun with Tarja would be my suggestion for you. See ya in your next video, and thanks for the great content you provide us with :-)

Excellent analysis and I am with you 100%. And it is also smart to go back in time and get some "vibe" from the former singers, to really see how Nightwish have evolved through time - from their composing, style and to their lyrics. In that way you clearly see the impact Floor and Troy had, when they became permanent members. It's also important to remember to time-line here. Both Troy and Floor were real professionals when they arrived (the documentary "the making of Endless forms most beautiful" shows this). Especially Floor who had been writing and composing for more than a decade on top level, she participated on a whole new level, compared to former singers. And as you say, Anette is a very good singer, especially to this type of compositions (Tuomas is a genius in knowing exactly how-to) - but on live concerts, she came on short. She is better now - much better. It's incredible to see how the 3 singers perform the same songs differently - and there are fans to all of the versions. It really shows the evolution and the effects of the lead singer - and how well the rest of the band can adjust to the lead singers personality and style - and vice versa. The fans reaction is another story.... Excellent analysis and reaction - and please don't worry about doing a lot of Nightwish reactions - their songs and styles are so versatile from pure classical music, celtic folk, to heavy metal, that it will never feel alike. The reason might be in the change of lead singers..

There are three songs on DPP that deal with the break up with Tarja. This one is written about Tarja, The Poet and the Pendulum deals with Tuomas's state of mind after basically he was ran over by the rollercoaster of angry fans. (Even the Finnish Prime Minister was asked to comment on her dismissal). The third song is about Marcelo, (Tarja's husband) Master Passion Greed. This song is the most dark and angry song Tuomas ever wrote and Marko never sounded more angry, also Jukka tried to kill the drums and Emppu has never sounded chunkier. But the song is killer; good speed, chunky riffs and pure rage that grows and grows in the song. I always feel bad saying this but I truly wish Tuomas was pissed more often.

Anette gets a lot of unwarranted hate. She is obviously no Floor or Tarja and she doesn't have the depth of colour but she is good outside the context of Nightwish. She does some NW songs really well too and those 2 albums she did were two of the most popular - that has to say something. TPATP is my No 1 Nightwish song so glad you're coming to it. (No 2 is Song of Myself and No 3 is 7 Days to the Wolves) When you've done TPATP you may want to listen to the demo version which is all Marco vocals sounding quite like he does here in places. But the demo is angrier, lyrically and in delivery so worth a listen. Emppu is badly underrated. I'm my opinion he is a true Master, almost a GOAT.

I aprreciate that you caught the fact that this song is a radio composition. Tuomas wanted to be as largely broadcasted as possible probably. I need to tell you that, Toumas said in a in interview, that the easisest thing to do, is to create a composition of lenghtier duration, and the hardest thing is to write a song which is 3-4 minutes long. For example Ghost love score is about 10 minutes. Poet And the pendulum is about 15 minutes, and The Greatest Show on Earth is about 23 minutes !!! Those are the most viewed songs by reactors - but i must emphasis that there are others as well. For example Creek Mary's Blood - A native americans story which is (as far as i know) the only song used in a movie as a soundtrack which is about 8 minutes, Song Of Myself about 13 minutes (but in concerts are played about 6 minutes) ANNDD what i consider to be the best example - Imaginaerium (not the album, but the song) - a track which is an instrumental track which has about 6 minutes but is a FUSION of all the songs in the album - a remix if you would like.... but with this track you can clearly see how Tuomas creates an album. It's all about inspiration to create a song. Then from that song he can create a whole album and more. ALSO The album Human Nature (the last one realeased) there is a second cd which is a full staggering 30 minutes of Tuomas GENIUS in 8 songs which are all about the planet Earth in a symphony way (not symphonic metal).I really really really would like you to react to Creek's Mary's Blood Live from End of an Era 2004 with Tarja because it's a song that is so underrated - besides that, i really like, love and enjoy what you are doing. ... For the hope that would see Creek Mary's Blood on your channel i am subscribing right now.

And Anette absolutely couldn't perform songs that were written in Tarja era. But, as you said, if you take her out of Nightwish, she is great singer, just not what epicness of Nightwish requires. After 2 albums with Anette, Tuomas finally realized it's time to end this experiment and bring Floor in, which took Nightwish on whole new level. Can't wait to hear what you gonna say about Phantom of the Opera live from End of an Era (Tarja's last concert with Nightwish, without her knowing it is last while they knew, which creates interesting dynamic in their relationship on stage, and it's legendary concert). I hope you pick that one as an introduction to Tarja, I mean you have to, there's no other way :) She and Marco absolutely destroy, insane!

I jumped down the 'rabbit hole' only recently during the Floor era, but I've done my homework and studied their history, too. Sure, we all develop our own preferences, but the simple fact is that Anette's voice is out front on two incredibly good studio albums; Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum. She may not have the power/range of either Tarja or Floor, but her voice worked well on those two albums and it was obviously the sound that Tuomas could craft hit singles around; Bye Bye Beautiful, Amaranth, and Storytime, for example. So, while I think Floor is on a level all by herself, my take is all three added solid contributions. Thanks for another great reaction, Eric!

Annette is a great singer! It’s hard to come into a band and replace the original singer, and it did, absolutely cause a rift between the fans. But that being said, it seems that rift was closed by Floor. Floor seems to have healed the band and healed the fans. The Nightwish army is whole again. I will agree that 2006-2007 was an extremely emotional time for Nightwish as well as was 2012 when Annette left the band and Floor had to fly from Europe to Denver (I think) and finish the tour having only the flight plus 3 days to learn the set list and practice with the band, singing with Marco for the first time. And she killed it!

It looks like we are building towards Poet, my suggestion is once you have done poet and you have an understanding of what the break up with Tarja was like (think back to "High Hopes" as that was the night it all came to a head.) Look at something like "My Walden" or "Alpenglow", "Shudder before the Beautiful" before going on to GSOE, it'll give you an idea of where Toumas is now mentally, emotionally and as importantly creatively.

The Interloper in Nightwish’s History is Tarja’s Husband, Tuomas wrote for Tarja this Changed the Core of Nightwish. Tuomas was Very close to Tarja before Nightwish, Long Friendship Growing Up. Tarja Changed after Marriage, the influence from Her Husband Created a Power Struggle in the band. Tarja Sided with her husband, this was tearing the band apart. Tuomas said Tarja could not be replaced (Talent was too good to him), So he was not going try. Unfortunately a lot of the fans did not respond well to the change, it was said that he was in pain when writing anything that was like what he had written for Tarja. Anette was not Tarja, relief maybe for tuomas in his writing , but the “Change” created a turbulence in the Nightwish World (Anger and Sadness).

Excellent reaction. I think you caught my thoughts and feelings exactly . Anette has a great voice for a particular style of song. I happen to like this version of bye bye beautiful better than the other versions I have heard , even live versions by other singers. So to hear Anette at her best I think you made a great choice. Another good choice to hear Anette at her best is the music video version of Amaranth. You caught onto the brilliance of Tuomas's ability to adjust the tone of the song according to the ability and sound of the lead singer. He seems to try to give everyone in the band a chance to show off their skills and make them sound at their best. That being said Tuomas must be in heaven being able to write for a singer who is so versatile , talented and agreeable .

Thanks for doing these older tunes as there are many many gems in the back catalog. There is a making of this video that is fun to watch.. with the band trying to teach the models how to look like they are actually playing. There are not a lot of good videos of Anette live but there is some from Lowlands 2008 and Gampel open air. For Tarja, anything from the Wishes to Eternity or the End of an Era show will work. High Hopes was from that concert as well as the Phantom with Tarja and Marco. For something different try Pharaoh Sails to Orion from Wishes to Eternity, not your standard NW (if there really is one).

As usual, great reaction. Very insightful comments on Anette's position as messenger. Someone else already mentioned my favorite of her tracks, so I'll go concur with it instead of leaving it here. Who knows how accurate this is, as it's likely a fuzzy memory combined with potentially wildly inaccurate information in the first place, but from what I recall when this whole ordeal went down, the internet fans were convinced choosing Anette was "selling out", "going commercial", "a "vain choice" etc, and the Nightwish sound would change entirely with that. Tuomas responded by writing this very "radio-friendly"-ish song, threw beautiful female counterparts to the entire band into the video, and put out a middle finger to Tajra as well as the entire negative not-fanbase in this song. If someone else has more accurate information, I'd love to hear it. This is just my recollection of various internet board postings 17 years ago.

I love nightwish but I have a soft spot for Anette because she was Era of nightwish that I first heard Dark passion play was my first nightwish album then was a live concert release of that tour. Anette sounded great. My first time seeing Nightwish live was the Imaginarium tour but was a 1 off in Universal amphitheater that I got to see with anette. They did a metal cruise and then back to Europe. Was later that fall they did an entire north American tour for Imaginarium. I seen that as well in CA however that's the tour Anette was a few months pregnant and was let go from the band a few stops before the night I had tix for. Floor was flown in to fill in for vocals the rest of the tour. I was upfront that night. Floor was amazing. Actually she was better than she has been on the last 2 tours. My opinion. Anyway was an exciting time I got to meet Floor and the band and hang out. I have photos with all and Floor was drinking a bud light after the show .I also met Marco earlier that day when they were loading in. Super cool dude.

It's strange you mention ABBA because, as I understand, Anette was an ABBA cover band singer before she was chosen for Nightwish. Or did you already know that? Anette's 2 albums with Nightwish are my favourites but I think that has more to do with Tuomas' song writing and the state of mind he was in when they were created. This is my 3rd video of Nightwish without Floor. I discovered Nightwish with Floor 2.5 years ago, and have not been really interested in the other 2 female singers. I have only watched 3 Nightwish videos without Floor, the Phantom of the Opera with Tarja, Storytime music video with Anette, and now this one. Phantom of the Opera because I have loved that musical since it came out in the mid 80's, Storytime with Anette, because Storytime at Wacken 2013 or any concert Floor sings it, is my favorite song. Lastly, I only watched this video today is because you were reacting to it. I liked it and understand a lot of what you said. When you get time, check out Floor's While Love Died (Official Video). That will rock your socks off also, at least it did mine. Another side of Floor.

Another great and unique reaction. The Live and Let Die reference is spot on and one I never caught before. Others have mentioned the Nightwish Trifecta of the Tarja break up and also Tarja's musical response. Enough by Tarja is really good and worth a reaction. Anette was usually better in the studio versus live. Just compare Amaranthe music video vs her live at the Lowlands for a song written for her. I have heard other vocal coaches say she has a vocal timbre that is easy to capture and lends itself to post production which may be part of the reason her studio stuff sounds so good. I also love her stuff with Dark Element (Songs teh Night Sings). As her voice has matured it has added more depth and warmth to her sound. Best live Annette is Slow Love Slow from Montreaux. Also love Meadows of Heaven live as well. They chose the models for the video because critics accused Nightwish of picking Anette just for her looks. Lots of people like Phantom of the Opera for the Tarja era but that song is really about Marko. I think Nemo and Sleeping Sun do a better job of show casing her beautiful voice. I especially love Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan, one of the few Nightwish songs in Finnish.

Anette's voice is very smooth and very poppy for Nightwish. This composition has a strong commercial appeal. It's like you're listening to Nightwish without listening to Nightwish. I could say that Tuomas made wrong choices at this time, but The Poet and the Pendulum is from the same record, The Islander too, Sahara... I don't know what happened to this song and Amaranth, but they both sound like common songs. Emppu is incredible as a musician and as a person too.

Thanks Eric! Especially for taking the politics out of a great rock track! I'm fairly new to Nightwish and while I recognize the vocal range, flexibility and dynamism of Floor, and she is superior in every way, I don't hold that out as a reason for excluding the previous vocalists. There are some tracks from each version/iteration of the band that have great appeal. For example, I prefer Tarja's version of Sleeping Sun, and I really hope you get to react to that. And I have a particularly soft place for Troy and their instrumental track, LAST OF THE WILDS. This band just has so much to offer, dating back to their 1st album, to take an elitest position on which singer is better is to turn a deaf ear and blind eye to years of exceptional songwriting and composition. And the 'rift' is an excuse for friction or to place one's self in a superior status. They're all equal. Timing is everything. And the most impactful music is specific to everyone and to no one. Each person experiences music/art with their exquisitely unique filters and amplifiers. No two the same. In my observation of consumers of art, the individual determines the value, but only for themselves. They can NOT impose their perception on another. Just can't. So, while every fan can make a value judgement about the quality or subjective appeal, that judgement is singular, for an audience of one. The listener. When I was much younger, I was often the victim of peer pressure. Especially in my listening choices and I was encouraged to like some things or dislike others based on the group I was with. For a period of time, I listened to bands Like BREAD or CSNY. At other times it was KISS or NAZARETH. But Not the BeeGees or ABBA for God's sake. I didn't find out for 20 years how good their music is. I still prefer Rock and Metal, but once in a while, I'll put on DIARY by Bread, or YOU SHOULD BE DANCING by the BeeGees. Their music still holds up 40 years later.

Gotta give it to Annette, she nailed those two studio albums, allthough live performing is not a given for every singer/songster out there... Glad you did your research on the whole Tarja debacle, this way 'The Poet and the Pendulum' will hit you twice as hard, as you get a front row ticket to Tuomas' mind dealing with the aftermath of firing her. Tears me up every time I enjoy it...(🤔, right?😄) Be sure to react to the Wembley stadium version with subtitles, it adds so much more to it... I appreciate your refusal to weigh the pros and cons of their different singers. For me Floor is 1 if 1 but Nightwish is not what and who they are without the contributions of both Tarja and Anette. Anette is great and never claimed to be a metal singer. Tuomas wrote songs that she could deliver in a studio and she did that very well. There is a reason that their albums with her were so commercially successful. The album versions of Amaranth, Storytime and this track are awesome.

Plus, it's the one song that simply belongs to Annette, in the sense that not even the glorious Floor has been able to make it her own. Once you hear the chorus, you'll understand.

Great commentary as usual. It was a good pick. This is one of 3 songs related to the Tarja split. This one pointed at Tarja herself and what lead to the division. Another, Master Passion Greed is pointed at Tarja’s husband, pretty much blaming him. It is sung by Marco. It has no video and was never once performed live. Probably their hardest/heaviest metal song. Give it a listen sometime. The third being the great Poet and the Pendulum, with Tuomas’ inner feelings of the aftermath. Anette did get an unfair shake, both when she entered and when she left. Do stick with studio stuff of hers. Looking forward to all your Nightwish reactions.

Anette was, well is, a brilliant vocalist on her own, no doubt about that. She's just not what a Nightwish vocalist needs to be, she was the Nightwish vocalist the Band members needed her to be at the time but on the long run not the vocalist Nightwish needs. Annette was a ferry for Nightwish to cross over the bitterness and transform into something otherwordly we see it become. It wouldn't be fair for the vocalist to carry that hate on her words for the rest of the bands life, when she had no role in the original trauma. Floor 🌸 was the new blossom of Nightwish, and her shoulders carry no weight of the past.
