I'm glad you took the time to find out about the song and what it means. In North America, we have no experience with the concept of there being a war that gobbles up generations , and kills MILLIONS. We have no concept of long drawn out wars happening on our doorsteps, spreading famine and misery. Yet this has happened over and over in Europe. The background of the song was a war that happened between 1618 and 1648, ALMOST 400 YEARS AGO!!! And there's a good half of Sweden, singing the words back to Sabaton with GUSTO. How amazing it must have been to be n that stage, to hear and see that audience, all bent on hollering out that song together.
@ThomFoolery14 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, it was interesting to learn about it. I've always been fascinated by those older wars that were much slower and drawn out. I can't imagine what it was like to live through those times. Such a powerful topic matched by beautiful music, performance and the passionate crowd. :)

Thank you Sandra for this comment. I tried to give you this appreciation before, but obviously KZbin don't like me to express my feelings in public. So glad you like Sabaton. One of the best live bands I have had the pleasure of seeing live. I saw them in Charlotte NC USA on a Tuesday night in 2012 with only about 20 other people in the room. Joakim looked at the crowd and basically said that this was more than they expected. The band put on a performance worthy of a crowd of 20,000. True professionals and even better people. Fast forward to October 2019 in Atlanta GA USA...Sabaton performed in front of a Sold Out crowd (most of the USA shows were sold out in 2019). It is has been wonderful to see the popularity of the band grow of after all of their hard work and dedication to their music.

Here's for anyone that wants the (rough) translated lyrics I turn around and see my home disappear My time at home now feels to me, far too short Only youth, barely a man when duty called. If I will see my home again, That I do not know Among kinsmen from my village, I went out into battle And the world burned Because the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will miss me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who mourns me? Went out in battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood Out there, death awaits, no heroism On the fields where kinsmen fall, no song is heard Challenging our destinies, once again Far from home Be baptized and die in battle And the world burned Because the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will miss me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who mourns me? And when my time has run out Who will care? They fight on Does a soldier get a dignified end? Fall asleap. Fade away And never wake up Because the war it can Destroy a man I give my life for my homeland But who will miss me? So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who mourns me?

As a Swede and fellow Sabaton-fan, it's always nice to see people of other nationalities enjoy them! However... "Pearson" is definitely Swedish/scandinavian in origin. "Persson" or "Pärsson" (It's spelled different in some families) ,does not mean "son of a pear.. It Means "Son of Pär". (Pär/Per is a common name here). I know someone mentioned it earlier... but you should look into your heritage. =) Nice reaction vid. Keep it up.

Thomas Pearson Funny enough the album this comes from - Carolus Rex - they wrote said album in both English and Swedish (their native tongue). As such I believe they wanted to do something special for said album and started changing a few things to reflect that said album is all about Swedish patriotism - Carolus Rex being Charles the XV if Sweden - as such for the Swedish version of the songs they made this one more personal - as Swedish troops served in the 30 year war, even tho it took place in the German states.

My try for translation which makes more sense in English. Motherland isn't the perfect translation because in Swedish it's "Fosterland" and that basically means country where you have grown up and which you love, your homeland I look behind me and watches as my home dissapears before me. My time at home now feels way too short. Yet a youth, hardly a man when duty called Will I see my home again? Among friends and relatives I head out for battle. And the world burned. Because war will ruin a man I give my life for my motherland But who will miss me? So see me as a husband a friend, father and son that shall never return home. Who will mourn for me when i'm gone? Went out to war for Sweden, baptized in blood Out there only death awaits us, not heroism On fields where friends are falling no song can be heard. Challenging our fates yet another time. Far away from home(be baptized and killed in battle) And the world burned Because war, will ruin a man I give my life for my motherland But who will miss me? So see me as a husband a friend, father and son that will never return home. Who will mourn for me when i'm gone ? When my time has run out, will anyone care They fight on Will a soldier get a worthy end Get his rest and fade away to never awake Because war will ruin a man I give my life for my motherland Who will miss me? So see me as a husband a friend, father and son that will never return home. But who will mourn for me?

The 2020 show was a virtual show on a virtual stage in Wacken with virtual audience. This was played live virtual. Both shows were filmed and mixed and streamed via magenta TV 360 of Germany. Typical Sweden, make a song of war, that totaly anti-glorifies the war, and point out how the war destroy/ruin the man (soldier)

Still Mainstream Media (Swedish) gave the album bad/mediocre score in 2012 when the album was released. Accused of romanticize the period. Though really well received by the real Metal reviews and international press, and especially the fans. This song is anti-war but most of the album is more "neutral" like the their usual stuff.
