Commander Hadfield does teach as a professor at the University of Waterloo here in Southern Ontario. He’s also become a successful author with three or four books published, the most recent one, “The Defector” being a current best seller here in Canada. I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly last week at a speaking engagement and book signing at a local theatre here in Hamilton. He’s a very good, knowledgable and articulate speaker, spoke for about an hour, then took audience questions, followed by a book signing for anyone who had copies of any of his books. He was in no hurry to leave and signed every book presented to him. He even signed one man’s ukulele. He took extra time with the children. I asked him what his favourite airplane was to fly (he’s flown about a hundred different types) and he said probably the Spitfire, partly because it’s such a pleasure to fly and partly because it’s so iconic.

Cirque du Soleil (French: Quebec “Circus of the Sun" or "Sun Circus") is a Canadian entertainment company and the largest contemporary circus producer in the world. Located in the inner-city area of Saint-Michel, it was founded in Baie-Saint-Paul on 16 June 1984 by former street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix.

One of my twin granddaughters (a 3rd year Astrophysics major at the U. of T.) was invited to participate in a research program this past summer in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. Prior to this placement she had no idea how many countries contributed to the space effort in general and in Canada's participation specifically. She told me there are dozens of important (and necessary) parts developed in Canada for the rocket program and the International Space Station, something I wasn't even aware of!

In a CBC radio show Chris Hadfield described an incident during a spacewalk. He got a drop of sweat in his eye and the stinging sensation was quite painful. In the mean time he had to complete the job he was outside of the spacecraft for. He explained what emotions he went through as he worked. As he retold the incident I understood just how unrealistic all the Hollywood movies about unstable personalities are. Nobody chosen to go into space gets to lose their cool. He also told about how his body felt after being away from gravity for a long time. He said that even his tongue felt heavy.

I was born and raised in a small town around Sudbury and have visited the Big Nickel several times. Got to go underground in an abandoned mine shaft to experience what mining was all about. One of my summer jobs was actually working in a mine when I was going to University. Canada’s space program has assisted the Americans a lot, and is very much not talked about. Canada is working on the Canadarm 3. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen will in 2024 will be the first non American to land on the moon, if the mission is successful. I was born and raised in a small town west of Sudbury, it's a fascinating area from a scientific point of view, also growing up, so much fun to jump into those pristine lakes from all those great rock formations, I didn't realize until I moved to the east coast as a teen that in fact, all railway tracks are not covered in bits of slag fallen from the cars, who knew, I live in Toronto now but return home every summer to see my family and hike the trails, its so beautiful up there.

He missed the "hoodoos" in Southern Alberta but like he said, they were like tidal formations but a few million years past. They are close to the US badlands. There is a treasure trove of dinosaur remains in the area and the amazing Royal Tyrrell Paleontology museum in Drumheller. He can get a pass since I'm not big on astrophysics. He did a lot of conferences with school children from the ISS and really was a terrific teacher.

Chris Hadfield is an incredibly intelligent and humble man. So engaged in so many areas of life. He was the 1st astronaut to tweet from space, with the assistance of his son, who, I believe, was working in Germany at the time. I met him once, briefly of course, when he visited the school at which I was teaching. We didn’t speak for long but I found him to be incredibly knowledgeable with a self effacing manner. He answered questions or discussed any relevant information and he didn’t condescend to anyone, either students or teachers. Chris also did live broadcasts from the ISS, often with students or news networks in Canada, which were groundbreaking at the time. The kids loved it! Needless to say, everyone who interacted with him was in awe of him, his intelligence, kindness, humour, his personality in general. He’s a national treasure and a Canadian icon. We love him. (“J’aime poutine” = I love poutine. It can also mean “I like …”.) Yes, most Canadian kids are taught French in school for a few years. My goodness, you really are going all in on all aspects of Canada, Canadian life, history, etc. Bless your heart! 🥰🇨🇦❤️👨🏻‍🚀

Cirque du Soleil is 100% Québécois. Guy and friends started out as street acrobats and entertainers in Baie St-Paul, a picturesque town in artistic Charlevoix. Then they grew it into a circus with a big blue and white striped tent in the Old Port of Québec. And from there they took over the world. Their creative vision was to add theatricality, live original music and artistic costumes and sets. And to leave the lions and tigers and bears--and elephants!--in their natural habitats instead of hauling them around in cages.

Went to see Chris Hadfield in a neighbouring city a few years ago. The whole evening was magical, between him showing pictures from space to the interesting anecdotes. He shared that some shooting stars may actually be what is expelled from the space station - not ancient stars, poop. 💩🌟 On the drive home, we saw the most amazing display of the aurora borealis and tried to think how it would look from space. We stopped to take some pictures and just about died laughing when we actually saw a shooting star. Like I said - magic. hehe

Concerning Cirque du Soleil. It started near Baie Saint-Paul, a little town on the Saint-Laurence River north east of Quebec City. I remember that I hitchhiked there when I was young and then, they weren't a circus yet, it was just a band of jugglers on high stilt and they where called "Les échassiers de Baie Saint-Paul". Concerning an astronaut being afraid of height, I have done skydiving in my youth and our teacher was afraid of height. She started to do skydiving to combat her fear, but when you are so high, you don't feel afraid the same way, so she was still afraid of height even after nearly 1000 jump.

When I was in school (before University years), French was one of the languages which were offered starting in Grade 8. In order to enter the University of British Columbia, it was a requirement that the applicant have at least 4 years of language training. The educational system was divided into two ‘streams’; Academic and Vocational. The Academic stream was the stream which students entered to enter, after graduation, University. The Vocational stream prepared student for work. Those Vocational students who wished to go to University first had to complete a year at a college and then apply to enter university based on the marks they received for the subjects taken.

As a Canadian, this country sucks. Everything is expensive and overpriced. Need to see a doctor? Good luck. The wait-list for a family doctor is years long. If you go to a walk in clinic or even the hospital, regardless of whether you have an appointment or not, you're going to wait many many hours. Months for something like an MRI. Our healthcare isn't as free as everyone says it is, we pay for a lot more than you think. Our homelessness problem is out of control now as is our drug addiction problem. There are no jobs here. It's impossible to get a job. They lie to newcomers, people think it's so great here and then they come here and can't find a job. I can go on and on. This country is a disaster and it's full of people who think they're Americans, following all the friggin conspiracy theories and shit from the states. Common to see "fuck Trudeau" on pickup trucks. Have some respect, it's fine if you don't like the guy but it's not the Canadian way to cuss the guy out like that. Be a gentleman. I hate this country, absolutely hate it.

You are close, but not quite right. The badlands are in southern Alberta, not Saskatchewan.

Now I'm horribly depressed, lol. That guy has more intelligence in a pinky finger, that I could ever hope to obtain in a dozen lifetimes. That I got every one of the answers super easily, and he fluffed a few, makes me feel like a dirty bragging punk for some reason, and my utterly useless knowledge doesn't amount to a damned thing worthwhile, as a human. Auugh. 🤣

Unnecessary for the moon landings: Canadarm. Unnecessary for the launching of rockets, satellites, etc: Canadarm. Without a space shuttle: Canadarm useless, going nowhere.

Just like clockwork, there's poor Dil, nowhere to go if not for Aussie or Mert or Tyler or OJB to pour out it's insecurities to, claiming Canada is insignificant and nobody thinks of it yet unable to stay away. BTW Dil, what HAPPENED the other day????? You deleted an entire thread on one of Tyler's videos. There were 22 replies to your comment (mind you, half of them were from your multiple troll accounts, but STILL..........). Gee, I sincerely hope it wasn't because of anything anyone said........................

The important thing is that you're not all bitter and f*cked up over it. 😐 Neither the Canadarm, nor any Canadian worth his/her syrup cares about any of that. Maybe we can program it to flip you the bird every orbit.😅 🇨🇦😉 Try Coping, Eh?

@ultimatespinach is this the same guy named silvana dil, or something like that, that I constantly run into in the comments of others that react to Canada? The guy can't seem to get over the fact that not all reactors want to learn about the US, but rather other countries.

@@FurtiveSkeptical LOL, fer sure! Too bad Dil didn't bring any of this to the attention of NASA before NASA foolishly went to Canada to build both Canadarms, right? NASA obviously didn't know what they were doing............

I went to the Big Nickel in Sudbury when I was a kid about 40-45 years ago, from what I remember we also took a tour of a shut down mine that was just a tourist attraction, we got to go fairly deep in the mine and the tour guide explained the history of the mine. I don't really remember much from it but it was quite interesting. As for learning French when I was in school we had to take it for grade 6 ,7 & 8 and also in High School at some point but most tried to take it in gr. 9 so they wouldn't forget what they learned as much if they took it later in HS. I passed every year but forget most of the French I learned.

That mine is not a shut down mine. It’s not a real mine. It is just a replica of a mine built into that hill that the Big Nickel is on. Now it is called Dynamic Earth, part of Science North Science centre. It has a lot of learning activities to do there. I can see the Big Nickel out my window.
