Real Families

4 жыл бұрын

Jo Frost is back on track, and this time she is revisiting some families to see their progress since she first answered their pleas for help. Six-year-old Paige had never slept a full night in her own bed, leaving her mum exhausted. Bedtime was a battle that took hours each night and when Jo installed a new bedtime regime, Paige struggled. A year on, Jo learns whether mum has been strong-willed enough with Paige to reclaim her evenings.

It makes me sick how everything is about that little diva. Her older sis Leah(? Not sure if I got the name right), is an awesome, caring, obedient child, and her mother COULD NOT care less about her. It's all about the little brat. When the mother was crying on the sofa, feeling sorry for herself, the older daughter tried to give her hugs and comfort, and she was all but pushed away by mom. She does not appreciate her older daughter at all. It's a real shame.

That's exactly why she took the Teddy away because it meant something to her. If you take something away the next day or something that doesn't mean as much then your consequences for bad or unwanted behavior are useless. But you know what? it's a step in the right direction. That little girl probably thought twice about sassing her mother again!

Its interesting indeed. She seems fine and her sister seems fine at her grandmother's house. If the sister had any issues as the rest says the child has, it would be prevalent at grandmother as well. A lot of people say night terrors, I have them almost daily. If indeed she did, it would happen at granny as well and not just at home. I personally think she behaves this way because she was allowed to have her way from get go as well as she overshadows her sister to keep attention on her, and it seems to be working.

The mom that took the teddy seems like she's making the situation worse. Taking away something like a teddy bear at bedtime, just seems cruel. Take the DS but a teddy is a security, comfort item, she's antagonizing her daughter instead of descalating the situation.
@robinsongbird499

Yeah it seemed the girl wasn't really upset about the D's thing but was just really upset about her teddy bear been taken away. Like teddies are important to alot of people some people can't sleep without them. I'm basically an adult and I still like my teddy bear as it's a comfort and sentementle. Besides the girl also said she would of been fine with hoovering her room and doing the dishes and stuff if the other didn't take her teddy bear away. Like I remember when my mum got mad she would warm us about taking our ds away then after 3 warnings and we didn't listen then she would take it away. It worked as we would usually calm down because we don't want our stuff taken away.
@davidkeller5130
@davidkeller5130 3 жыл бұрын
Retrospectively, it probably was a mistake in the first place for the mother to have told the child she was taking the teddy. It would have been far better had the mom chosen to confiscate an item that wasn't the child's object of comfort. Once the mom told the child that the teddy was being taken, however, and the child responded with, "You're NOT taking teddy off me!" the mom needed to stick to her words and to take the teddy no matter how much the child protested. This is a child who desperately needs to learn her place in the home and in the world, and it's not going to happen if the mother gives in to this child. The child's choice is to follow the rules or to face the consequences. The child is not allowed to choose what possession will be confiscated.

My oldest son was always content to play by himself and sometimes with his 2 younger brothers. It wasn’t until middle school that he had a small, tight circle of friends. It was a poor choice of an item to confiscate, and I would hope the mother didn't repeat the mistake when items needed to be confiscated in the future, but once the child said, "You're NOT taking teddy off me!" the mother needed to follow through and take teddy. It was an authority issue at that point. A child cannot be allowed to dictate to a parent what item may or may not be taken.

They're never there for me nor my brother, don't really pay attention to us, and the only time they come interact with us is when they yell at us to do something or the silver/gold stocks went up/down (we both have silver) _TW_ and my father openly joked about suicide in front of me after I got diagnosed with a few things in front of his face a few months ago, then proceeded to invalidate my mental health & tell me it's something I have "time for" and that it's "my fault". Long ago, I was on the Parent Policy Council for Head Start & attended a conference in Grand Junction, CO where one of the speakers had the entire room in murmuring shock. He told us we MUST be the one in charge, NOT the child, giving an example. Btw, Head Start is a US program to get early education for low income children 3-4 years of age so when he said to throw away food, the murmur got louder. You tell your child beforehand where you're going, what you're expecting, etc. If they're going to be going to Burger King, McDonald's etc (earned surprise for good behavior but NOT telling them "if you behave" as that is moot.) When they've been good, doing what is expected you praise, being specific as you are driving to your chosen eaterie & comes the clencher especially if there's a play area. The plan/rules before going in ie we'll get our food, sit down together to eat and when done, we'll clean up and THEN we play. The speaker went on to remind the child of the discussion about rules beforehand. If the child didn't adhere to the first & only reminder, it was time to go. Throw it all away. That's what brought the murmuring to a fevered pitch. The child will not eat anything until dinnertime. You sit them down, start with praise for the greatness they displayed in obeying the rules & ask what rules they broke before going in to eat. It lets them "think" what rules had been made, another assurance they heard you loud & clear. It drives me crazy to hear a kid screaming all through the grocery store for 20 min and then give the kid what they wanted. So next time, they'll scream longer. This happened in the store a long while ago, a mom's saying no, screaming & all eyes on her. I went to her at her right side as the kid was STILL screaming. I told her it's difficult to have all eyes on her but she was doing the right thing. The tears fell. I put my arm around her shoulder & told her I wished all moms could be like her. Her son is probably a senior in high school. I think we all have had strangers in life that are still remembered. I've had several & hope that I'll be remembered as well. Peacefulness to all.

"Diva" is a nice way of putting it. Wow, the UK (where ever the diva and her mom lives) must be nice,... the mom, who is just a beautician, can afford her own house, 2 kids, and to buy them extremely expensive clothes. In California and many other parts of the US a single mom beautician could barely afford to rent an apartment in a shitty neighborhood and would be buying her kids clothes at a thrift store or walmart.

Society teaches kids to want things. It's advertising everywhere to have more and more. Many parents will give in to kids due to the non stop temper tantrums by kids that know parents can't punish them much or their schools and docs will take the kids. I have known many kids like that. They believe they can act like they want and be demanding or they will report their parents. They literally bully their parents due to knowing they can and get away with it because the parents are blamed for their rudeness even the kids that are corrected will ignore their parents due to what the schools and docs teach kids. But now they are raising my nephew and spoil him rotten they never punish him and he is horrible! They sleep with him every single night. He steals the keys to the car, money, talks back, everything they do is dictated by him. I'm not mad at them for punishing us because I turned out quite respectful and responsible and I never did the things he does. But they shouldn't of taken it as far as they did is all I'm saying.

@@cassk3364 wow. Relatable tho. My parents were strict but my stepmother was outright abusive and took her mental health issues out on me; middle of the night rampages pulling us from bed, screaming, hitting, destroying everything in our rooms without provocation. I grew up without any kind of love from her, always trying to appease and please her to hopefully avoid one of her fits. This led to all kinds of issues in early adulthood & so far, 20 years of therapy & counting. The only positive is we're polite, mindful of manners, respectful & don't throw tantrums.

@@aspenmontgomery409 same here my mom has bad mental issues and took it out on us she never told us she loved us. She has OCD real bad and would clean all day to the point we couldn't even play with our toys without her screaming at us and throwing them at us. To this day I have a very strained relationship with her and it sucks because the person I was closest to my grandma died last year and I needed comfort and all I got was the same rage I had my whole life 😭 when I just wanted my mom...

While today's advertisements may be more pervasive and more effectively targeted toward children, the concept of marketing geared toward children is far from a modern concept. Saturday morning commercials from as early as the 1960's were targeted to persuade children to nag their parents for toys, snack foods, and sugary breakfast cereals. The people who work on Madison Avenue are always going to do what they do best, which is to target their ads to specific populations. If parents simply function as parents and refuse to cave in to ridiculous demands, it's not a problem.

It's a privacy and boundaries thing. I was never told I couldn't go into their room but it does and did make me uncomfortable. A bedroom is a private space and I've always treated it that way. Hence why I avoid going into anyone's bedroom if I can.

What! I was born in 1962, and my mother would have made me one with the wall. Children need structure and rules. Those rules must be followed, and If they are broken, they should bear the consequences. If a parent fails to control their children, their children will lead them. Madison is rude! The mother needs to put her foot down and be firm.

I am a single mum of a 14 year old boy.. almost 15. He’s 6’2” tall and about 220lbs. If he ever acted like that towards me.. I’d drop kick him.. and he knows it!! But .. he’s never dared to.. because I raised him to be respectful. I put up a strong confident front.. even when I felt the total opposite.. children are a product of their environment!

That's the thing, I do not believe its unhealthy like is portrayed, its mostly born out of pressure for parents to get stuff done before they go to bed and get a good nights sleep due to needing to get up for work in the morning. Its only in the last few generations that many families even had the option for their kids to have their own room or even their own bed. Our modern habits are in no way healthy, just look at how many teens have mental health problems these days. Jo does touch on this in some episodes, where parents just aren't spending enough time with their kids, but I feel she really missed the mark on that episode as she seemed to assume it was a power play with no real attempt to find out what the child was feeling. (or that was simply edited out for episode length)

@@alexatkin growing up I suffered from extreme anxiety due to some pretty severe abuse that wasn't my mother's fault. I had a difficult time sleeping in my own bed because night time was when panic attacks hit the worst. I was ok in my mom's bed as slept with her until I was a teen when I was finally able to handle the panic attacks. You are right, sometimes there are definitely underlying reasons and it isn't always a power play.

My 28yr old don slept with his dad and I until he was 10!! I finally broke him by making him sleep on the floor beside me, then in the doorway, then on his floor and finally in his own bed. It took about a month but we finally did it!! He was such an outgoing kid, tons of friends , stable home etc and we even took him to therapy. When you ask this well balanced, successful man why he slept with us ...he says “huh...did I” Grrrr lol

I really liked how Louise put it and I think it's the same for these parents: they forget that it is something they are doing and causing, instead of thinking it's the child or just the way things are. I find that very relatable. We can all do that in life in some way and it makes sense that we then bring it into our parenting. I am happy for these families to turn things around, familylife should be fun and comfortable.
