Most brand new type S (61-65k CAD) I've seen listed are asking less than a lightly used fl5(65-70K+CAD). Was car shopping as the type R got announced. MSRP was just within budget so I was excited. Then mark ups basically happened to the entire hot hatch segment. Couldn't get past the looks of the N so ended up getting a BRZ no mark up. Great car when u can find some twisties or track but kinda beats u up in longer commutes. If I were to shop in today's market, I'm honestly tempted at a lightly used mk8 golf R for 45k ish. Yes the engagement is lacking but still a good value at that price. German depreciation means it's still almost 5k cheaper than a used GR corolla core and the near same price as pre facelift fk8 type Rs.

Enjoyed the series. You and I have such similar taste in cars. I agree almost entirely with your list. I had a 2020 ND2 and then got the FL5. The amount of reviewers waxing lyrical about FL5, I was afraid it would expose how inferior the MX5 is, because I loved that car. And FL5 simply didn't. I had both cars together for a total of 9 months before I had to get rid of the Mazda. But given the "Porsche-esque" praise FL5 always gets, which is justified, I now see the MX5 as the most fun new sports car on earth. Nothing tops that. People get all hung up about lap times and capability, which the FL5 and so many other cars have in spades. But the MX5 pivots around the driver. You sit so low, amplifying the sensation of speed. The lack of weight is just a magical thing. FL5 feels like a bus compared to MX5 with so much car behind the driver. Same goes for every other regular car. MX5 has perfect pedal placement, zero rev hang, instant response, and no active safety features that switch back on with every drive. Starting to fall in love with my FL5, but no other new car will feel as 80/90's as an MX5. I believe we may have another 12-18 months of MX5 on sale before it ends production. I hope longer. Stupid financial decision for me, but I love that car too much to not pull the trigger on one. Prefer new as I like to run it in carefully for peace of mind. Glad you put both the MX5 and FL5 as your top 2.

Great series; I really enjoyed it. I made a similar decision in summer '23, basically considering all of your top six. At the time, the Toyobaru twins, GR Corolla, Civic Type R, and Integra Type S were unobtainium in my area without massive dealer markups--dealers who were also very reluctant to give test drives--plus the latter three were priced beyond was I was comfortable spending even at MSRP. And I was tempted based on its glowing reviews, but never seriously considered the Elantra N because of a bad previous Hyundai ownership experience. In contrast, I was able to get $2K off MSRP on a new Miata RF GT (manual). Because it didn't have to be a practical car, it was a no-brainer and I've loved every second driving it. Side benefit: It gets amazing gas mileage, even when being thrashed. Probably can't say that about any of the others here. But...if I could have spent more and could have gotten one for MSRP, I think I would have bought the CTR or ITS. So I understand your dilemma in making a choice!

Awesome series, and I agree with your conclusion! I want to mention two things: 1. Even if the ND shifter feels better than the Type R's (I'd say it's more of a toss-up, but that's just me), the reliability issues surfacing again makes the Type R the safer choice. Reports of ND transmission problems and failures recently began to increase from 2021+ MYs. 2. Given the discounts on them these days, Z Performance models can be had for around $47k (gunmetal), while Sport models are basically touching the higher end of Miatas. I don't think this puts the Z in contention for a top spot, but maybe bumps it up a few places? Anyway, excited to see what's coming next!

You’re on the same page with me on cars and welcome to the club Tyler! It’s not the new best car, but it is one of the most fun and unique driving experiences: lightweight, pure, all RWD, and reminiscent to 80s/90s JDM cars. Would like a FL5, GRC, Supra, but would still miss having this experience. I would get a GR Yaris if that was available (seems more oversteery than GRC, more pure, and 2800lbs). Throughout your extensive comparison series, it seemed you didn’t give too much praise to the miata at all. In this video, I was already excited and surprised when you ranked the miata as 3rd noting and ranked it with the best shifter. I love my 2020 ND softtop only more and more daily driving exclusively top down in California. It’s the only new car that reminded me of fun lightweight 90s JDM cars that I enjoyed such as the original Miata NA, original MR2, and EF/EG Civics all under 2200lbs (Miata ND at 2334lbs). Plan to keep forever as my last fun gas car and add any used or cheap gas/ev 4 door in future when daughter turns 5. Still hope for more fun gas cars in the future but will see.

BUT I couldn't grow to love the looks of it I think when you buy a car you really have to love the way a car looks. The 2024s look worse in my opinion. The clutch was very weird mainly from a dead stop in first gear. The octane learning was a joke. Vehicle didn't feel that quick. So I'm trying to figure out what I should buy to replace it. Still looking. I was looking at miatas and joined a Facebook group. Seems like a lot of people are having transmission issues with the Miata. Synchro issues were they get a new transmission replacement or warranty Not sure when Mazda's going to fix that but it seems like a lot of people with 2023s are having that problem. The Civic Type r is a great car looks great in the front but the rear looks horrendous. I'm not a fan of all this new tech in these cars. Taking my time as prices continue to go down. Especially with a Nissan z. Lots of dealerships are having trouble selling those. Would love to get a new Miata as well but not sure on the reliability with the transmission I don't want to have to have it at Mazda for a new transmission a bunch of times like some people have
@Realistick2 күн бұрын
The transmissions aren’t built to handle extra power, people like to turbo them, people like to track them hard, it’s easy for them to get abused. I heard about some failures with the ND1 but not in huge numbers. I haven’t heard much about the ND2 issues (outside of a brief google today) so Ill look into it more for my next video but most owners love them and don’t have problems. You're definitely right. I wanted to include the TR, but I was under 25 and Subaru's insurance policy is apparently too strict (just got press approval after my recent birthday). I also tried to get ahold of a modified VB, but I couldn't get it to work out.

@lordflyquad47212 күн бұрын
Yep, eventually, you sell your Miata(s), and a few weeks later you realize something is missing in your life, and get another one. I'm on my 4th...although, mine have all overlapped ...haven't been Miataless for the last 19 years.
@streamiusКүн бұрын
I had never heard that, but I can see it. It's the perfect car for perfect days, but on any other day there's something better. Still, I just tested one last week and can't get it out of my head.

That feeling at the end? I get it. I think about trading my 2020 Miata I bought new constantly due to its impracticality for an Integra Type S. The miata is much more of an A to A car for me which substantially limits how often I can drive it compared to a fun A to B to A car that can get me and others around. It feels impossible to let go of, but I can't deny how infrequently I can drive it compared to a more all-around car, so I get stuck driving my pickup most of the time

How does the gr corolla have a wider variety of settings than the N? From electronic suspension to active exhaust, there's way more configurability on the EN side.
@Realistick13 сағат бұрын
It's more fun in a wider variety of settings (settings as in places), the GR works well no matter the weather or road surface!

@@Realistick ah got it. Misunderstood the wording. Overall pretty solid list. I would add a value category imo, but that would definitely change the order of the list. Here in Canada, gr corollas and fl5's were going for 70-80k while an Elantra N was 41k. It was a no brainer because I could realistically buy a c6 corvette and an Elantra N for the price of one of those. To me, value is as important as anything else because the money I spend in one car could be money that goes to another

I am trying so hard to cut back on my automotive subscriptions, but you’re making it hard. Great job and choice if you went MX5. With the money you save you can pick up a cheap 2nd daily if needed. Old E46/E90 insert something from Asia as well.

Type R is almost unobtainable at MSRP and can’t be driven in the climates I face in the winter. The GRC or the WRX STI (used) were my only options. I went with the new GRC last year and it’s been amazing. If I lived in a warmer place I would try to get a Type R.

Love the reviews and perspectives you offer for vehicles in THIS price range! It’s a wonderful class of car, and I also ended up close to a decision between FWD manual options and the ND. My nostalgia won though, and the ND2 was the winner for me :)

Its crazy that I was in the exact same position a little over a year ago. I had a deposit down on a Civic Type R but was looking at MX-5s on the lightly used market. They were such a screaming deal price wise, so incredibly fun to drive and I didn't need the extra space. I also ended up with a Miata RF haha. Its been a year now and I drive it everyday as my daily, it'll even be my daily in the next Canadian winter since I got winter tires for it! Honestly no regrets, and the Type R/S can always come later as the more "practical" car in the future.
@joeb42942 күн бұрын
Congratulations! I've been thinking about getting an MX-5 for a while. I'm holding out to see if Mazda offers some more interesting color combinations of the ND3 in its final years. Or, maybe I will be intrigued enough by the presumed "NE1" to hold out for that.

Just found your channel and subscribed! Your fun car review series is great. I’ve driven or owned many of these cars and I can’t find a lot of faults in how you’ve ranked them. I just picked up my second Type R and plan to keep it for a long time. It’s such a great car.

Great video, the summary is well balanced and full of useful information on helping people choosing a sports car that suits their need. This series have sparked the idea to own an MX-5 again but as a second car this time around. My reservation is that I live in a rural area and commute to work in a long stretch of straight roads, how much fun will I get out of an MX-5.

Tried dealerships across the country with the Type R, in no way is it as easy as many say to get it at MSRP. Elantra N for MSRP baby

It's crazy how they make it so hard to buy sports cars, and then use the low sales as evidence that they should discontinue manual sports cars.

It’s a huge problem, a lot of the dealers that do sell at msrp will only sell in-state.

I chose the GRC over the civic type R, Golf R and WRX TR. I wanted a hatch or sedan for practicality but I also wanted something rowdy and it just checked the boxes. I will say the WRX TR was very disappointing imo because I love the WRX but Subaru just fumbled on the newest gen.

Love my GR86! Fun, quick, affordable, it has a head turning factor where people really notice it. Can't beat the balance, more comfortable than one would imagine, and there is enough practicality. I've had multiple people in the back seat, so its doable, though certainly not the most comfortable. lol

@@Reala27 I can't imagine how that would be possible. Maybe if the driver and passenger in the front were under 5 feet tall. I could not fit a 5"1 kid in the back seat with two people slightly under 6 feet in the front no matter how much I tried. There is literally no room for anybody with legs to seat in the back if the front seats have average size adults in them.
