Brings back memories of me lying on my back in my father's garage in 1983 replacing a front pump seal and bushing on my 1973 dodge coronet in -20F weather. I froze to the bone trying to hold lift the trans with one hand while starting the first bolt with the other. Hours and hours of attempts before I gave up. The next day I borrowed money from the old man to rent a torpedo heater. Had the garage preheated to 180 degrees. First attempt, had that first bolt in. I was ecstatic. Finished the rest of the install in less than 30 mins. Lowered the car, filled the trans, started it up, threw it in reverse, and all was well. While letting the car and trans warm up I cleaned up all my tools and the garage. I turned around and my heart dropped. Trans fluid pouring out the bell housing. I mangled the front pump seal and bushing that first day trying to start the first bolt. Defeated, I borrowed more money from the old man, drove a half mile to the trans shop and told them to replace the seal and bushing. The mechanic took mercy on me and did the job for $75 so long as I agreed to watch him do it right. He spent an hour going over the job as he completed it and offered to mentor me anytime in the future. I took him up on that a few months later when I threw my rear end pinion and ring gear. Thats how I learned. The school of hard knocks.

I don't know how many times I've been summoned by a friend, one of my kid's friends, or more often, one of my wife's friends to go help someone out of a spot. The fact you dropped everything to run over and help says a lot about you. You're a good guy. Done a great many clutches in my day but enjoyed watching this vid, as always! Most recently I did the clutch in my 98 Nissan 200SX. As I get older they get harder...I used to just lay on the floor, roll the trans on my chest and just huck it up in there. Couldn't do it this last time. Had to do it with my floor jack. Would sure be nice to have the lift and the tranny jack!

You made that clutch job look so easy! I have done so many of them,a few lying on the frozen ground in the snow,resting the transmission on my chest. Yeah not that much fun. When I did the one on my Aries,it was easy,the engine was side ways,first clutch job I ever did on a front wheel drive car. It was so easy! My friend had a hoist with a pit,that had to be the best set up ever! I did a lot of engine,transmission jobs in that pit! Loved it. Thanks for the memories. We changed a manual clutch (friction plate) once, felt really proud of ourselves, put it all back together and the friend go to start his car, put in clutch and no car move. His father came out and said 'which way did you put the clutch plate in'? 1 hour later had it all back out and yep, clutch was in backwards, it even had a FRONT on it we missed. We felt so friggen stupid.

Yes, those manuals always tend to confuse the hell out of me. I recall being confounded as to the direction the friction disc faces. One one page the diagram showed a certain way...and the pictures showed something different. Years later, it occurred to me that the pictures they used were rarely of the same car.

and not to forget the flywheel bolt tightening procedure. That is a real mystery to me, it seems everybody does it differently. The manual says one technique...the box the flywheel came in says a different method....I just want to make sure the dam thing doesn't work itself loose and break/bend up everything underneath the car :(

I have changed a few clutches in my life some my own cars/trucks others for other folks . My first clutch job I was just helping the mechanic told me before I handle the new clutch wash my hands, and read the instructions to be sure the clutch goes in correctly. That was before most cars started using hydraulic clutches. Dodge pick ups have used hydraulic clutches since the early 60s I have an 88 Dodge Dakota and never had any problems with the hydraulic operation It has 228,000 miles on it

I replaced the clutch on my 94 F150 in 2016, lying on my back in the driveway. I noticed that i felt light headed when i got up fast. Two weeks later I was in the hospital getting a quad bypass operation. In 2022 I did a complete timing job on my 2004 F 150, 5.4. it is amazing what the docs can do today as long as you dont smoke. Im now 77, but still doing my own work. Ive never had a car payment, and I would not buy any of the crap they sell today anyway. Just watching Eric track down all the electrical problems built into todays vehicles is enough to scare anyone away from anything "New".

Eric O and ETCG have different backgrounds. ETCG was a dealership tech. I think anyone would be a little spoiled if all they worked on was Honda's for 20 years. Besides swapping automatic gearboxes, warranty work and recalls its must have been kind of boring.

Dealership "techs" can't touch independent shop guys... They never will. I'm no mechanic but have had enough first hand experience to know. The other Eric seems to be in his element when working on Hondas because of his background but the rest of the time he seems kinda lackluster. Still love the guy, just not sure I'd bring something other than a Honda to him.

Great video reminds me of days in '60s & '70s when we jacked them up in basement on jack stands and put in a new clutch, we would have died and thought we had gone to heaven to work under a lift !

Only time I ever did a clutch was on a 66 Mustang. We thought the clutch was wore out since it slipped really bad. My buddy bought a performance clutch for the car and we got busy removing the 4 speed one bitter cold Saturday morning in Minnesota. The car was on four jack stands a few feet off the ground in his dad's heated garage. Once we took out the old clutch we discovered the guy who had rebuilt the motor used silicon for the rear main seal (lets just say he was in a hurry to get the car back together and cut some corners) therefor oil was getting all over the clutch and flywheel which caused the slippage. We put in a new seal, and the new clutch and called it done. Since the car was on jack stands my buddies dad decided to weld in one of the nuts so the power steering assembly would be attached properly to the car. He was using a stick welder (not sure that's the right term) and nicked the fuel line. For some reason or other I was sitting in the car, my twin brother was standing a few feet away from the car while our buddy's dad was underneath. I heard the distinct sound of fuel catching on fire (makes a certain sound if you ask me), I looked at my brother and his face lit up from the light of the flames coming out from underneath the car. My brother ran outside the garage to get the first thing he could find to help put the flames out, a handful of snow. My buddies dad got out from under the car and ran to grab his fire extinguisher as I struggled to get out of the car myself. The fire extinguisher was like many things in his house, old and outdated! It had maybe one or two good squirts left in it and was just enough chemical to put the fire out. Sorry to share my story with you of working on a clutch, glad to see you made it through with all your digits and no injuries!

Harvey Smith I was working on my own car for many years before I decided to get myself a set. Anywho after doing a harmonic balancer, and my alternator brushes, the tools paid for themselves. Makes removing tire lugs a lot easier and quicker too!

Funny enough, the older Mustangs ('80s Foxbodies) and Rangers used an external slave with a shift fork. Given that they went to an internal slave in 1990 (I think), I'm guessing that UK cars went that route too?

@@oceapliler2950 : Yes. If you're in the States, get a new hydro line that has the quick-disconnect fitting, and replace the slave cylinder along with it. Relatedly, when you attach the line to the slave cylinder, you should hear a 'click', which means the line is seated. Next, after you get the hydro line attached, Scotty Kilmer and others show a cheap bleeder tool that, instead of pulling air through the line, it pushes it back up to the master cylinder reservoir. Third, make sure to lubricate the sliding surfaces properly with high-temp grease. Fourth, when removing the pressure plate and clutch disc, you need to be able to lock the flywheel in place -- which means you need a prybar of some kind. If you can get them, either Advance Auto or Harbor Freight has a set of 3 prybars, and I usually use the shortest one, holding the teeth of the flywheel, and pinning the prybar against the inner channel of the frame rail. Next tip: Go to a boneyard and pull the front joint of a driveshaft for your drivetrain -- take the u-joint apart, and use it to plug the tail of the transmission, so the fluid doesn't leak out. You can bungie-cord tie it to the trans. But I mention this because you will have to remove the driveshaft and split the transmission to get the old clutch off, which means removal of the transmission crossmember and rear mount. I'm not sure what goes into a 4WD drivetrain, since I've only ever done a 2WD, so I'd recommend picking up a Haynes manual as well. Hope this helps.

@@oceapliler2950 Did a clutch on a '90 Ranger 4x4 a few months ago. We decided it was easier to pull the engine than mess with the 4x4 stuff. It was a good idea anyway, we ended up replacing the oil pump. Anyway, turned out the bad clutch was caused by a mouse making a nest above the pressure plate, and then when someone pressed the clutch, it fell in. Makes you wonder why they put a hole on the top of the bell housing.

I had to replace the 5 speed transmission in my Ford Focus. It got stuck in reverse. At any rate I picked up another transmission at the junk yard and got it moving again, but the car was a problem so I sold it. Great job 👍 Eric! ! ! !

A quick safety reminder for those working on ramps or jack stands with the rear or front on the ground. Keep in mind that if you have it in gear, once you disconnect the driveshaft (propeller shaft), the car is no longer being held by the transmission. Use your parking brake, or even better, have all corners on jack stands so the car isn't tilted and also you can spin the propeller shaft to get to all the bolts holding it.

Very nice job, Eric. Reminds me of when I, many, many years ago (circa 1966), with my only prior mechanical experience being working on a single cylinder 2-stroke lawn mowing machine, removed, totally reconditioned engine and gearbox on a 1955 Rover 75 (major machining work done by outside reco company), and reinstalled it all -- with purely manual tools and a "bendy rod" torque wrench. It ran like a good dream and was a pleasure to drive.

I watched until the end, just to see what your bleeding method was. The worst time I ever had bleeding a hydraulic master/slave assembly was on a Dodge ( ala GM ) NV3500, where the master, reservoir, are 1 assembly, with the slave, held together with 1 plastic line.. and no bleeder screw. I even consulted a factory service manual for the procedure. Nothing is stated! I kinda ended up winging it, rigging up the slave in the vice, hanging the master above that, then hanging the res above that, and bench bled it by working the plunger. That got 90% of the air out. Once installed, I did what you did, just worked the devil out of the pedal until 'it felt right' engine off. A simple bleeder screw would've made life SO much easier. Nice vid!

The shifter on my daughter’s 2014 Ford Focus w/AutoTransmission wouldn’t shift to the low gear. It could go from Park to Neutral to Drive, but not into low. Took it to the dealership (it was still under warranty). I explained the symptoms to the tech advisor and my daughter and I went to the waiting room. There had been bulletins issued on the Ford Focus transmission, so we knew it wouldn’t cost us much, if any at all. Well, after 15 minutes or less, the advisor came to see us with his hand hidden behind his back and a smile on his face. After a few seconds, he showed us his closed fist, then opened it to expose a large walnut. Seems my daughter, who parks her car at college near an oak tree, had a squirrel (yep, a cousin to Rocky) hide his winter walnuts up under the car and put them behind the car’s shifter which is covered inside with leather. Unfortunately, he said he’d have to charge us $80 to cover the tech’s inspection and time. But, thought I’d share that story with you. I’m sure you’ve got similar creature stories! If you grab an old exhaust valve from the bin heat the stem and bend it at 90 degrees it makes a great flywheel lockup tool stick it in any bolthole and sit the head in the ring gear

I wish I could find a mechanic as good as you in England, and one that takes as much pride in their work as you do, been having clutch issues for a long time and have had to do alot of self diagnosis and repair myself because the mechanics are so shoddy, still having clutch issues now but am slowly working through them all as I learn more

@Mike Anderson You ever get that with new brakes? "They're so touchy now!" They sure are. Your old ones were grinding the rotor off! People are great. I'm surprised they don't come back and say they miss that burnt oil smell.

if you mark the bolts with a start and a finish point at 90 degrees you can use a impact to get the final torque and the crank won't need to be held still

( A Question for Mr Eric Ohhh) I jacked up my 93 fox body Mustang to put a newer style lightweight better torque starter in it and when I put it back together I started having the pilot or throw out bearing noise only when I press in my clutch, doesn't seem to affect performance or anything & it makes that rubbing/grind like sound ((only when I shift/press the clutch in) and the sound tends to go away as the car warms up but it's just odd that it happened literally after I put a new starter in ( as if I had a light switch on and off weird ) any ideas?? that I maybe dislodged,bumped something? Maybe need to shim something? Had absolutely zero issues with the car prior to jacking it up and putting in the new starter, this is a mint condition 93 foxbody w approx 600 hp 302/stroked to a 331 with a V1 supercharger with about 10 pounds of boost ,running a acell dfi engine management system, if that makes any difference? PLEASE ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED🙄

I used to use a sander to take the glaze off the flywheel on the car. Sometimes packing grease behind the old pilot bearing tobdrive it out with a pin that fit the hole in the center. Rear wheel drive clutches in them small cars were pretty easy. Front wheel drive manual transmissions were a little more difficult. Nice job Eric. You make it look easy.

My fool proof method to stab a transmission. Expect it to be a battle. Prepare for that. Get it lined up and expect the worst. Now this is the critical piece. Insert any soft fleshy piece of your hand, palm, or fingers between the mating surfaces. You've had plenty of time preparing for the battle, now start leaning on the trans. It will slide in merely grazing the splines, and dead center of the pilot bearing. If not for the pain of a fresh blood blister you would be amazed at the efficiency of the task. You're welcome!
