This Video is the first part series of Rebuilding the Nissan Jatco RE4R01A/RL4R01A. This transmission is available in a Electronic "E" version and a non-electronic "L" Longitude version. The video shows How-to Remove the transmission bellhousing. Swaying the bellhousing is a easy way for using the transmission on engine like VG33E and VQ35DE engine series. Take a look at disassembling the transmission bellhousing front oil pump for inspection and the beginning or removal of is reverse clutch drum with rotating assembly.

Wish i watched this before destroying the speed sensor in the same manner. Quick question.. how tight should the drum be when the band is fully torqued and backed off? I ended up having the screw nearly flush with the nut after going by their recommended torque values, and afterward it felt like the parking brake was on when trying to drive in reverse. The tensioner was eventually loosened, but I probably wore the band out by test driving. (car no longer moves, and line pressure is only 30psi at idle in drive)

I rebuilt the RE401-A Trans in my 2004 Xterra because the reverse drum bushing was bad now it wont start off in first gear. i get a code improper gear ratio also it wont shift into 4th gear but when it shits to 3rd its smooth and feels normal. the fluid looks red and normal, any ideas?

Yea, the reverse drum bushing will go bad once its brake band is worn-out. The problem most of the time is with the forward drum piston oil seal is stuck or is not fully engaged to make the vehicle move forward. Before dis-assembling the unit again, you should try adding a bottle of LUCAS TRANS-SLIP and let is circulate around the internal of the Transmission while trying to drive it. Always make sure the unit is fill with type "D" Dextron fluid.
