As a Caltex dealer having had 12 sites over 10 years my opinion. Never fill up when a tanker is in .....50 odd year old tanks are full or crap. There are no filters on bowser or dispenser, you get the shit in your tank rather than their filters. The temperatures in an inground tank at the end of WA summer's day can be as high as 65C. The humidity , yes water in the tank from continually sucking in humid are , particularly at night , corrodes the crap out of the roof of the tank. This fall's back and sinks every time a car drives over the concrete above it. Hence the sludge. Was it an old site .....which one ? It probably has been rebranded heaps of times ....so those tanks can be 70 years old. PULP 98 is the slowest seller so it gets the oldest crappiest tank. My Scarborough site the 98 tank used to bee the kerosene tank from the 50's. If it's a major ....Ampol BP etc give them a call, send them a link to the video ....they have deep pockets. I was given a Caltex account to fix the issues , and there were many. I had 10,000 litres of water delivered to my Belmont sister one evening, and the line of dead cars stretched down Great Eastern Hwy. Remember product is transported via a single pipeline , and to separate each product they use about 25t of shitty brown recycled water . Sometimes some of this ends up in the tanker.....and because it's dumped down a 4" hose into the tank the station may not know for a few days .....slow selling product and most people don't complain if it does not become apparent immediately , like water contamination. If the servo denies anything as for the "metres and dips" and their water contamination tests. They have to give it to you. When dips are done ,daily, they have to a water test by law. If they can't prove they have they can be open to being liable for compensation. Push them hard ....I know what goes on . PS I have been a subscriber for a while, I'm restoring a 300ce and a 300ce-24. Your videos have been an inspiration ...thanks

it is indeed an older station, i dont want to name names but it’s probably the oldest one in Wanneroo and was previously a shell and now rebranded to another. I learnt my lesson and will never go there again. The fuel itself was complete crap, when i put it in my other 300e-24 it pinged constantly. Theres no way it was 98. I usually deal with Ampol in wanneroo and dont have an issue.

Holy shit! That makes me nervous and also pisses me off. That behaviour is unacceptable. I have an aviation background and if that was practiced on an airfield there would be dead people all over the place. I know many people don't like the idea of going electric but these are the companies and practices that are being supported by staying with petrol. The same companies lobbying governments to hold back EV rollouts are pulling this shit at the other end. It kills our cars, wastes our money, damages the environment, forces us to pay more for fuel and repairs and eventually new cars. Fuck them royally. Make everything electric. Mercedes already built 50 or so EV 190E's in the 90's that performed very well. Nothing wrong with EV swapping a Merc from that era. Just doing what Mercedes has already done and fucking off the petrosludge crowd.

I feel for you. Very frustrating and annoying to go through all that effort. You car looks super clean though :)

I suggest before replacing the fuel tank t add fuel injectors cleaner , add high-quality gasoline available in your country, drive at high speed in the permitted places, repeat this process, and you will see the result.

I agree. The tank has to go. 😊

I had the same cut-out symptoms around corners etc. PO had had ‘reconditioned tank’ fitted. It was coated inside with a thick black ‘paint’ that had reduced the hole to the swirl pot to nothing. Replaced the tank with an un-reconditioned one from an high mileage car and it’s been fine. I try and keep the tank full now but we have 3-5% ethanol at best option in uk

Unbelievable. At least you had a new fuel filter. Lets hope that stopped it before it went down the line to your new injectors. Might also be the ultimate test of the "forgotten" final filter in the fuel distributor.

I had this problem some years ago because of fuel that went bad and the tank rusted inside. The gasoline did not smell correct, it had a sour smell. it clogged everything. I think there is a screen in the fuel distributor, it would be my indicator as the new filter blocks new fines from the tank. Sorry for your troubles!
@WillEhmannDesign Жыл бұрын
I've seen someone hook up an electronic fuel pressure sensor (using an adapter so it fits the thread) to the test port on the distributor so you can monitor it while driving. Dunno if that would help but its cool! lol

I've had the same problem on my 124. The fuel tank needs removing and cleaning out properly or perhaps a new tank. This will have been destroying the fuel feed. What you could do is fit a fuel inline filter just off the tank outlet, you can then see if there's any contamination. Your fuel gauge is also jumping so you need to take the sender apart and clean that up.
@MMWA-DAVE Жыл бұрын
already did the cleaning of the sender - i dont drive the car enough unfortunately so its gummed up again. Was good for a while after cleaning till got that crappy fuel.

The fuel tank of my 420 SE w126 has the same corrosion as your w124 tank ( mine sat for a while and the gasoline here in guatemala isn't the best one). Some people say you can clean it with vinegar or with the electrolysis procedure. I will try to save it or I will use a 350SDL diesel tank.

I am so sorry to hear you have to go through this. You may have to change the tank, strainer, filter, and probably the pumps. If there’s anything I can do from this side of the planet, I’ll gladly assist.

My 124 is currently sitting outside as i am waiting for the stupid wiring harness to be rebuilt. Hope bad things are not happening in there. It's already been two months.

Frustrating, 95 is far higher sales turnover in the eastern states compared to 98 and I only buy from BP and Shell as their sites have all been refurbished, New tanks etc.

Have you checked the engine wiring harness the 124’s are known for having these issues caused by the harness

What’s the ethanol content in your fuel? Over extended period of time it may turn in to jelly like substance just like what I see in the tank. I wouldn’t remove the tank. Just disconnect the lines and rinse the stuff out.
@Mike_Costello Жыл бұрын
Our only ethanol fuel is E10 ie 10% ethanol. Our standard 91, 95 and 98 have no ethanol content. MMWA only uses RON 98 which is as high as we go here. "E10 is a blend of regular unleaded (RON 91) petrol and between 9% and 10% ethanol. Blending the ethanol at this ratio increases the RON to 94."

W124 использует эффективно 69 литров из 70 и глохнет. Проверено лично. И да действительно при забитом фильтре и малом количестве бензина начинает громко работать бензонасос и качает бензин с пузырьками воздуха.

Commiserations on the crud issue, Dave - but I was intrigued to see how "twitchy" your fuel tank dash needle seemed to be: take a look when making the U turn early on in the clip, then shortly later on the return. Any explanation?

Две причины, почему стрелка топлива дёргается. Грязные нити уровня топлива и плохой контакт в приборной панели. Решение: 1. очистить нити уровня топлива 2. подтянуть гайку стрелки уровня топлива в приборной панели.

was new with the engine rebuild. It’s definitely fuel starvation as can hear the pumps struggling at the time. They are also new and normally silent,

You should not be using high octane fuel on a 30 year old car not designed for it On the fuel cap it says 91 that's what you should be using If you don't understand engine combination don't play with it
