Redbone - Wounded Knee (in Brussel in Belgium)

In 1973 Redbone released the politically oriented "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee", recalling the massacre of Lakota Sioux Indians by the Seventh Cavalry in 1890. The song ends with the subtly altered sentence "We were all wounded 'by' Wounded Knee". The song reached the #1 chart position in Europe but did not chart in the U.S. where it was initially withheld from release and then banned by several radio stations.

My sister introduced me to this amazing group. I love this song. How sad the U.S. chose to ban the true history. The treatment of Native American tribes breaks my heart. Their diverse cultures have always fascinated me. What an honor to speak to one of the older people and listen to their stories; any they would be willing to share.

Jimi Hendrix called Lolly Vegas his favorite guitarist, and an agent at CBS records where they signed in 1969 made the statement that in his opinion Lolly Vegas was the best guitarist in the business! Incredibly powerful track as both historical document and metaphor. “We were all wounded - you and me” We’re all wounded by imperialistic tendencies and social engineering somewhere down the line. We all lose by the hand of our leaders, either directly or through societal division. But we’re a new generation. It’s up to us to seek veneration.

After they recorded Wounded Knee in the US CBS records refused to release it because of political connotations and so they just sat on the record and basically it was banned here. Pat says that he went down to the business that was in charge of pressing the records and ordered 500 to be pressed out and he bought them . He said he smuggled them in his luggage when they went to Europe! They got a platinum record for that song in the Netherlands.
