Mike being personally burned and derided by an actor he admires, who was directly responsible for a pop-culture franchise he loves and has invested a lot of time into, is possibly the only logical conclusion for the sins that RLM has committed. He's from a different era. I loooove Peter O'Toole's over-the-top Shakespearean style of acting. Everything is projected for the back row. And the DRAMA. The EMOTION. It works especially best in comedies like What's New, Pussycat? Shatter reminds me of that. If you are always acting like you're in a Shakespearean drama, it's going to come off as melodramatic at times. Which isn't a bad thing, because it's hilarious. But when those dramatic notes hit, by god, they really hit.

I once tweeted one of my favourite authors and she misunderstood my tweet and retweeted it with a spiteful comment, resulting in a lot of people descending on me to tell me I suck in various ways (a few telling me to die) and man, it sucked. It took me years to pick up another one of her books and I can laugh about it now (kind of) but I can't imagine what it would feel like on an even larger scale. I'm sorry, Mike.

The difference between Shatner and Stewart, is that Shatner didn't really have much success outside of Star Trek. I think Patrick Stewart would just remember all of the other stuff he's been in, brush it off, and have a laugh. With Shatner, ANY denigration of his time on Star Trek is a denigration of his entire acting career (at least the only part anyone remembers), so he takes it way more personally.
