I’ve owned my GL450 for almost 13 years and have almost 250,000 miles on it. I tow 2 boats with it; each one with trailer is over 5000 pounds. This vehicle is a beast and has NEVER let me down. You need to proactively maintain them or they will eat you alive but this kind of vehicle is never cheap. I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off!

@@sobyandrews7217 Mercedes Benz vehicles are worth it in the long run if you keep them for the long run and stay on top of the maintenance. I've owned many through the years and I tend to keep them for at least 8-10 years and do a lot of the maintenance myself once they are off warranty. Frankly, I'd never buy new... they depreciate WAY TOO MUCH. I've always bought CPO (Certified Pre Owned).

@@Mrwinecontreras The M273 engine in the 2007-2012 G450 and G550 is a great engine, but those manufactured before around 2011 have some very expensive issues including head issues (covered under warranty for me) and a gear on the front of the engine that was not covered under warranty... a $5,600 US repair I had to pay. Also, the intake manifold was replace under warranty at around 90k miles. I've had my truck so long that everything has been replaced and it runs beautifully. I wouldn't touch a pre-2011 G450 or 550 unless all the recall works has been done. Mine is a 2007. You want documentation.

I have a GL 450. The suspension failed because of time, but fixing it was not to bad, tail gate also had a problem with the actuator. Got fixed kind of easy. Coolant leak from old hose, also not big deal. By jumping it, the tail gate module broke. Got it fixed. These are the issues I have had, besides this, runs perfect. It comes down to how well you maintain it

Great video and some amusing social stereotyping! I have owned a 2009 Gl350 cdi for 3 years now. As a family of 5 with three teenage boys this car works🤜 (and works hard) We have a heavy enough boat and take it on holiday full of gear and the adventures we have help justify the maintenance cost. We do like the luxury combo with off-road ability. Yes old European cars don’t age well. I purchased the car knowing it will likely have a fair few issues and it has. I have kept cost down by sourcing parts and having a mobile mechanic who is ex Mercedes. If I bought my parts from Merc and paid their labour cost I would not feel value at all, but I don’t. A few things... You said it's made in Alabama, which is only in part accurate. The engine/transmission are completely made in Germany, so is the suspension, the steering and almost everything. It could be that the chassis is made there and for sure it's put together by the fine people of Alabama. I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm originally from Stuttgart and I live here in the US. I only drive MB. I had the ML430 up until I got this GL450 in 2008. It's black on black and today we look at 190250miles. ZERO problems! Secret? Do the maintenance by the book; don't be cheap on consumables and don't treat it like you stole it; it will love you back. Had transmission fluid replaced the third time in it's life two days ago and the MB technician said he's like in a time capsule in my car. There is a very big difference between those units which have been leased and returned; those most of the time are used like they stole it... Next; those who get a pre-owned one and don't have the means to do high class maintenance will see it degrade in front of their eyes, but this is valid for every luxury vehicle. I'm only installing Michelin tires and more specifically, those with the lowest life expectancy; those handle the best, superb actually. It's a darling of a car if you do everything by the book. Cheers mate! P.S. Regarding the drop in value... It's rather a drop in price and it's based on more than one factor. The unit you are presenting is a pile of crap; just think about it how the car can't scratch itself... The loose knobs got loose because a tractor operator owned it. A real Mercedes owner would never allow his car to feel like that. It most have changed multiple times the owner and for that reason, yes, it dropped value. A good one with a solid history will sell for a decent amount and one which needs attention, will sell for less. In my case, after 190k miles, all I have to say, it served me well and 14 years later I could not care less how much someone would pay for it; it's not for sale. We have other cars which are renewed every 3-5 years, but not this one. BTW; your mechanic... Nothing... Suspension is a very easy job; you don't even need specialty tools; no springs to compress. A kit will last 60k miles for sure, but it could give you over 100k miles. I did the job myself recently (Bilstein Made in Germany) front + rear including air springs $1200 all together. Yes I replaced a thermostat for $50 genuine and it's a15 min job; done at 180k miles...

I purchased the 2008 MB GL 320 cdi diesel in 2014 (2008 sticker price $66,000.00). Looked brand new then and now, 8 yrs. later still looks new. Yes, a hail dent on the carriage top, one small fender scrap (from someone in a parking lot)! Gets better fuel mileage than the sticker states (18-24), I average 20- 25 and long vacation driving 28-30 cruising! I have all the upkeeps done on schedule. This car is a Dream to drive! Comfy, small turn radius and it loves to cruise! It is the Capri Deep Blue exterior and the interior is tan leather with woodgrain. My version has the extra luxury features and they are nice!

Great video, offering a realistic, sober analysis of the potential pitfalls of GL ownership. I would only add that this thing corners well for a large SUV, despite how much the tires get punished. I have owned two. I bought a 2008 GL550 and we loved it so much we bought a second 550. The first one was totaled in 2017 because of an electrical problem caused by mysterious water damage. We received insurance money equal to the value of the car. It was a shame, because that car gave me almost zero problems during the 5 years we owned it after buying it in 2012 with 50K miles. We did have an extended warranty that paid for a steering rack that would have been $4K, but otherwise the only repairs over 5 years were a couple new struts for the air suspension. I think the water damage thing was a fluke. We still have the other 2008 GL550 that we got in 2013 with 30K miles. About 10 years on, it now has 123K and has continued to be a great car. We had to replace the steering fluid pump, the starter, the AC compressor, and the battery (twice). I think we had only one wheel go bad on the air suspension, which I learned can be easily fixed by an independent mechanic for half the price of a dealership quote. We are currently contemplating a sale of the 2008 (before something major goes wrong) and a purchase of either a GL450 from 2013-2016, or a GLS450 from 2017. I really don't want to sell, as the car looks fantastic and still drives like new. Just worried about potential catastrophic repairs that could happen at any moment, and we are no longer protected by any kind of warranty. We bought a used 2011 Infiniti QX56 for our other SUV, and it has been outstanding car (170K and going strong), with many more features than the GL550, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. However, my wife hates how the Infiniti drives compared to her GL550. The only thing I would say about the GL interior is how absolutely lousy the quality of the window control buttons are--definitely not consistent with a $80K+ MSRP. I actually broke the cheap plastic pieces off of the rear window controls on the driver door when I applied too much pressure when I quickly tried to lower the windows. Mercedes said it was something like $600 to replace the stupid little plastic pieces so I said NFW to that and just (kind of) snapped the broken ones back into place on the driver door. Now the back windows can only be controlled from the rear doors. Anyway, I would sum up my ownership experience by saying it has been good overall, but just be aware of the potential maintenance costs and try to get an extended warranty if you can still find one. If anyone has advice on whether we should get the newer body style of GL450 (2013-2016) or pay extra for a 2017 GLS450, please let me know. Thanks.

Bought my 2012 GL550 about 18 months ago with 100k miles. Vehicle looks almost new. Put about 10k miles on it in that time, hauled a 6x12,' trailer with 1200 lbs in it like there was nothing being towed. Gas mileage is decent on the highway. I love this car except the following complaints. washer nozzles front and rear leak, so the rear one leaks into the cabin. Also, it eats tires, but i found a post online blaming "sport mode" so I'll see if leaving it in comfort mode makes a difference. 21" wheels doesn't offer a lot of options for tires. Finally, some of the plastic parts are cheap and are not holding up. All that said, I absolutely love this vehicle. Not as much as I loved my 2000 Landcruiser, but still, love it.

I owned one for a few years, drove all over the east coast with it, off road and towing. It was a breeze on the beach, effortless through rutted trails around Lithgow beyond what people would expect to find one of these but it handled it all easily with only A/T tyres being added It was brilliant, comfortable, efficient and reliable. The air suspension is their bugbear, but cleaning them regularly did help increase the longevity. Interior quality is robust, I think the interior has the good balance of soft touch, good ergonomics and comforts whilst being robust enough to not break apart. Overall, I think you like many others have said went in too hard. You don't seem to know what angle to review the car as A luxurious SUV, or a hard-wearing 4x4. It's a bit of both, and it does that well.

It's like any product or service that exists: Whenever you look for issues, you'll find plenty of people to complain but it fails to account for the countless other people that aren't having problems. The other thing too is that you cannot lump every owners experience, or car condition, just based on that particular vehicle. Chalk me up as another owner, mine is about to pass 200k miles, I've owned it since 100k. I've replaced the battery, the air compressor one time, a thermostat, and a transfer case timing chain. I've towed a 7,000 pound travel trailer a hundred miles with zero issues, and have none of the creaks and groans that the vehicle in the video is being used to demonstrate. And nitpicking on interior button quality on a nearly-15 year old car and forgetting what time period you're comparing it from is silly. At the end of the day, it comes down to maintenance and a little bit of luck, especially with anything with higher miles. Any that have exceeded the original warranty become a crap-shoot. Original owners trade them in when the warranty will cover nothing more, and new owners generally aren't going to spend the money on repairs out of warranty and often times just let the vehicles degrade over time. Find examples with proper maintenance, don't shoehorn yourself into only paying a dealer for high labor rates and excessive OEM-only part cost (there are great aftermarket options for things like the air suspension, for example) and there's no reason to not take a look at them if you're interested. Oh, and ironic to complain about the size of the car while driving around, passing other cars parked on the street that are the same size or even larger.

As Jim talks about the potential issues with this car, I am sitting here nodding along, transmission problems - a big yes, suspension imbalance - yes, loose driveshaft - yes! I have owned my 2016 GL450 with tow package and other luxury/safety options since 2020. I bought it used for $22k at 83k miles and it was still looking mint in its iriduim silver. It was dealer maintained to the book with log. I was initially scared of the high mileage but it sounded and ran like new during my test drives. I travel a lot for my job and today have 110k on it. I only have replaced the OEM Pirelli tires with same and did three oil changes @10k miles. I call it my kick&go vehicle. Maintenance checks show that everything is still top shape. My Mercedes 2016 GL450 ( and most others) is built strong with no corners cut. It is a luxury vehicle and expensive too because German engineers know and assure quality in performance and durabilty. Has anyone gone under a raised benz truck and saw the quality alloy frame materials used? There is practically no cheap painted steel that will rust easily. My 6-yr old truck is as fresh underneath as it can be, not even a single rusty screw from years of Chicago snow salt. I had used three Ford Explorers from 2000/2006/2015 models and could compare. Within the same time period my wife used Mercedes C240/C300/E300 and while I struggled with everything like radiators, calipers, harmonic dampers, hubs, evaporatives etc at about 80k mileage she never replaced anything at 100k or more before trading in. That made me decide to change and go with benz with a solid heavy build for travelling. Eventually things will break but when. If you are careless/carefree and used to trashing stuff don't go near an expensive luxury vehicle unless you can afford the cash flow. If you use your benz vehicle normally with care it will serve you for many many years with good return value. If you want to go for a used benz make sure you check it out well with warranties. It is easy for a bottom feeder to jump on a $5000 GL450 that was badly maintained only to find out later all the cost and trouble involved. That has nothing to do with the quality of the make but all about the vehicle owner. Some "youtube" mechanics get ratings trashing luxury vehicles, and that is understandable since trashing cheaper ones will hardly be worth reading. If you are jack-of-all vehicles and master of none there is a tendency to be equipped with general repair tools and not invest in the special tools required for a benz. A level of frustration sets in when you could not use your general tools to work on a benz and the trashing starts. Have you seen a benz dealership trashing a benz? A mercedes benz truck is not a cheap vehicle. You buy it for its utility value. If you need it, you buy it. If you can buy it but can't maintain it then you bought something you don't need. You bought something beyond your means.

Really tough to take the mechanic seriously when he criticises the V6 diesel. It’s well documented that mercedes make some of the best diesel engines in the world and this OM642 has been placed in millions of cars, vans, trucks and ambulances and have a remarkable reputation. But wait, his brother had one 😅😅😅

Now 164k.Everyting works, Loads of room in the 3 rows of seats. Replaced front air shocks, repainted left rear fender (clearcoat was coming off). Looks great, pleasure to drive. I use liqui-moly in the engine coolant and oil (just me). Highly recommend Michelin tires. 5:15 - "The chances of a GL class owner actually going off road is pretty small". True, but great in bad weather, snow, or towing.

I'm a sucker for that interior combination. Wood trim is always a favourite of mine, especially that rich dark brown. This car has a very "Russian mobster" demeaner to it. Looks like there would be a few variants of the Kalashnikov rifle laying around the space.

I have the 4L, V8 CDI diesel version and it's a 2011. I purchased it for the towing and i like luxury, I like quiet. I do most of the repairs and maintenance myself, so no biggie for me, but things do wear out or stop working. When I upgrade, I probably will go for another Mercedes, but I can also see myself in a full electric car, like a Tesla or maybe a right hand drive cybertruck when they come to NZ.

The budget version of this car would be the Kia Sportage(before 2010 model years). Exterior looks like the Gl went on a little diet, and the interior is not filled with high tech stuff, but it is very comfortable and has much room on both the front and back seats. The 2.0l diesel model with 83 hp is the one I own and from what I have heard my mechanic says its the most reliable one out of the 3 engine configurations that are available in Europe. I get about 7 to 8 litres per 100km, and the car overall is just great to drive

The best version of this car comes with a 5.5 litre V8. The diesel is great for fuel mileage, but once the emissions start failing all that money you saved on fuel goes right back into the motor for repairs. I have a 2011 GL550 that I bought with 60,000 miles. The air suspension issues are par for the course on any Mercedes with that feature. Considering the car is billed as the S class of SUV's it falls a bit short in the quality and workmanship department. An S class has metal buttons and switches throughout the cabin. The GL doesn't. Mine has door lock/handle gremlins. My driver-side front and rear door handle work intermittingly. My passenger side door has to be locked and unlocked manually. My rear hatch works most of the time and has a mind of its own. The Bluetooth for the telephone will just drop out for 20 to 30 seconds at a time. The netting behind the front seats is trash. The kids will ruin them by stretching them out or if you have a kid in a car seat their feet will be rubbing up against the netting. They will look terrible. Mine don't look great. Why Mercedes put nets there is beyond me. My guess is they wanted something to look utliitarian. They should put a leather-bound pouch-like they do on their other carts. The GL is an absolute BEAST off-road. It can handle trails and mud holes with the best of them. Some GL's come with the off-road package that has the locking diffs. Those are unicorns and should be held on to like gold. One thing I learned from having an S class and a GL class with the same engine and transmission set up is that the belt tensioner and idle pulleys are service items that should be changed every 65,000 miles. Mercedes recommends a transmission service every 39,000 miles and they mean it. Oil changes vary depending on driving conditions and should be between 5000 to 7500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Keep up with the scheduled maintenance and you should be fine. If you make it to 100,000 miles do that service and you should be good for another 100,000 miles. Having said all that, these are not the worst cars out there. They defiantly have their issues, but the ride and comfort make up for a large part of their shortcomings. These trucks eat up miles on a long drive with power, comfort, and a quiet cabin with a beautiful 12 speaker system. Some GL's come with Distronic and all you have to do is set the system and be a steering wheel holder. If you prefer a more sporty ride set the suspension to Sport and enjoy throwing the truck into the corners while utilizing the steering wheel paddle shifters to amp up the excitement. The GL can also tow 7500 pounds, which is on par with SUV's like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 7.5. If you want a 10 get yourself a Toyota 4Runner. I had two, and they were fantastic. Virtually maintenance-free. Oil and brakes, that's it. One of the biggest regrets I have is trading in my 2005 4runner limited edition with the V8 for a new 4runner. I should have kept it. The MB GL 550 is the closest thing I have had since that 4runner in relation to power, towing ability, and off-road capabilities.

Agree, I get 13.4l per 100km, I'm on my 3rd one, all v8s , I have 3 friends who bought 2nd hand on my recommendation and love them, as well as 4 mates who bought cayenne instead and whilst on par off road, on road they can't get under 20l per 100 on the daily commute. I've dragged camper trailers up beaches, over sand dunes and gone everywhere the same year landcruiser will go, except on 21 inch wheels! Really are a great all rounder and very capable 4wd with only the rear departure angle a bit low. They also tow like a boss and I've done Brisbane melb in a day a few times and it's easy.

My father owns possibly the lowest driven km GL. It is a 2010 350 CDI Blue efficiency Luxury model in Australia. The car has done just under 45000 km. My father custom ordered the car brand new back in 2009 from Hunter Star motors located in New Castle. Being a medical professional my father could maintain and afford it brand new. Over the years it became his favourite road trip tourer over his daily driver a 2012 Australian made Toyota Camry SL. I will try to summarise with all issues he had so far with his GL 350 cdi. This particular GL is actually a V6 diesel version. In the last 12 yrs of owning not even ONCE the Big SUV was driven off road. Like I said his daily driver to his work and local shop was his Camry. In 2013, few months after 3 Yr warranty period expired, he had to replace the left rear led lights as few of the globes were blown. Mercedes insisted to replace the entire unit for around $800! In 2015 on a road trip the car was stalled due to a "Differential Lock system overheated" message flashing on the dashboard. The car had to towed to Sydney Parramatta Mercedes dealer where they informed us that it is an electronic sensor issue and an electronic chip needs to replaced. The chip arrived from USA in around four weeks where the car was sitting at the service centre for the entire time. It costed about $2700 to replace the sensor chip! Last year the car's air conditioning system broke down during summer! The car was no longer blowing cold air. It costed $1500 to replace the compressor! These were the major problems! And now to the minors. The car sometimes locks you out or it dosnt want to lock. The cheap feel plastic handbrake (it has a foot operated parking brake) lever broke twice! The wheel nuts are rusting. Mind you the car is almost 12 years old but it is still a pleasing looking big SUV which still receives compliments after a good hand wash thanks to its Ceramic Obsidian Black color and custom ordered color coded interior! From my observations and my father's experience, do NOT BUY THE GL! THESE ARE OVER 10 YEARS OLD NOW. VERY EXPENSIVE TO SERVICE AND MAINTAIN AND PARTS ARE BECOMING MUCH HARDER TO SOURCE!

We all buy on emotion and this is a hot car- looks and all- Happy to do an investment analysis for you if you wish on even buying a car in the first place- We have overpriced labour costs in Aust too..I look at the other way - take advantage of the depreciation =buy a good exmaple pay less for a awesome vehicle and budget for repairs...

theres a 08 gl550 for sale near me w 103k miles on it in immaculate condition for 5000us. while apparently they have some problems its a really good looing suv. i really like it having almost 400hp and 400tq as well. im debating whether i should go look at it and risk the biscuit lol. i can fix any and everything myself so im not worried about labor costs. i am worried about parts cost. my biggest worry would be the air suspension. i do know though you can swap out the air struts for standard struts. which if they went bad thats most likely what i would do. just eliminate it all together. again damn good looking vehicle w the 21" amg wheels on them. walmart just totaled my jeep because they installed the battery backwards and left it hooked up for 30 seconds. needless to say it melted all wiring and took out the pcm, alternator, tipm aka fuse box, complete wiring harness that goes from fuse box to starter, and some module. sad thing is i was going to install the battery myself but figured i could run in and grab what i needed quickly and leave in 10 min. i thought it wasnt possible to mess up a battery install. boy was i wrong, morons never cease to amaze me. they did however fire the guy who totaled my jeep. currently waiting for a check as we speak.

They call it the S-Class of SUVs but the QC on them was worse than Kias of the time

It's a shame, I was looking seriously at this vehicle as my next purchase. It's hard to believe this vehicle would cost mid 80s to $95k here in the US. I've seen a few videos about that third seat motor breaking down often, not able to raise the seats. I'm glad I came to this video, it's a shocker at the poor quality of a vehicle with the Mercedes-Benz name tag. diffidently I'm taking this vehicle off my list. Thanks for a great honest review, you have saved me thousands of dollars.🍺🍺

When you add up the future cost of maintenance, the present value of these is negative. That’s why the happiest day of my motoring life was trading for a Mazda. I feel I got paid to do the trade.

A quick Mercedes question: A mate of mine bought an ex-ambulance second generation Sprinter van a few years ago. Unfortunately, it proved to be chronically unreliable and he eventually gave up and got rid of it. He's just shelled out on a decade-old Mercedes Viano at auction with 220,000kms on the clock. This is my question: which institution should I have him committed to? I thought Jim might have some connections for his customers who buy Italian, or insist on replacing their Jeep with another Jeep.

New design, new twin-turbo v8 that has its own issues if not maintained. Same diesel emissions issues But, that is industry-wide and not just limited to Mercedes-Benz. Similar suspension issues. Better quality interior.
