Sounds like you have a lot of experience with these and nice to see one in working condition rather than a restored show tractor. Someone at IH did some incredible engineering when they designed those engines.

I just bought a 450D with a "B" pump that has diesel fuel coming out of the filler neck. You mention the "A" pumps have a scavenging valve that are stuck or have o-rings out, but what causes this in the "B" pumps? Great video. I love these gas-start diesels. I have a TD-6 that runs beautifully, so I hope I can get this tractor fixed up.

Hi Calvin, congrats on the 450. My favorite "sounding" of the series. On the primary pump (small pump on the back of the main pump) there is a double seal on its shaft. When those seals get worn itll let the fuel slip past the primary pump and into your main pump sump. There are sets on ebay now that have the two seals and gasket, but I can't comment on the quality as I have not purchased one yet. You're lucky your main pump seal has held up, the other outcome is that the diesel goes into your crankcase instead of out the filler spout. If you need anything else, feel free to holler!

@@reeseholler92 Thanks Reese, appreciate it. I'm going to get ahold of the engine and injection pump manuals via BinderBooks. I checked the engine oil level and it was overfull by quite a margin, so while the timing cover injection pump seal doesn't appear to be leaking, I wonder if I've only got 3 injectors firing and 1 dribbling fuel into the crankcase. It runs ok/good on gas, but has an breathy exhaust sound on diesel, which leads me to believe its only running on 3
@reeseholler922 жыл бұрын
@@calvincarlson8783 I've got all of the manuals, so if theres something you dont find, let me know. I would wager if you have an injector not firing, it would be the plunger being stuck in the distro block on the top of the pump. If you crack the injectors and they're all getting fuel, that would be a good start. Does it seem to pick up the cylinder at high speeds? Every one I've picked up has had a sticky plunger and I run a real healthy dose of cleaner through it. Hope this maybe gets you headed in the right direction

@@reeseholler92Thanks for the great video. I have 3 tractors with the same pump, B type. 2 leak fuel into the sump, 400D and 600D, 650D not much. I think the 600D also leaks fuel into the crankcase if the fuel is not turned off when sitting. This comment/question will help me fix those issues. I love these gas start diesels. One question I have, is: what to do if the butterfly valves don't trip over center when switching to gas? I simple push on the control makes them trip and close all the way. Adjusting the linkage that opens the third valve is the only way I can see to adjust that, but then that changes the clearance between the valve and the control arm. I did have the intake manifold apart to clean. Is it possible I put the over center spring mechanism in wrong causing it to need to be pushed further to trip? I stumbled on this problem when trying to start it on gas, and there was enough vibration from trying to start it by putting gas in the in take manifold. Either that it is just sticky. Should I try shortening that linkage so it has to push up further to open the valves? I am thinking that arm has gone as far has it can go, and can't open the valves anymore. Thanks for the tip on those seals being on ebay. Do you have a link to them you can share, or search terms to use?

My md won’t run on diesel. It dies instantly when switched over. Runs fine on gas and the gauge on the diesel pump reads good pressure. Also when running on gas I can move the throttle any way I want and no white smoke at all. Thanks for and help. Seems to be not getting and diesel fuel

not sure if you will see this but i bought an old farmall 400 md gas start diesel but the head is cracked any ideas where i can get a new one or if theres a different head i could swap on there?
@reeseholler922 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, it seems as though the later heads are more desirable. A later 400/450 head are backwards compatible to an md. I've gotten all of mine fixed at midwest cylinder head in Nevada Iowa. Great folks to work with and they ran me about 1100 a piece to get fixed. Pricey, but its the cost of bringing life back to these old machines. I've had 3 of them done so far and each has exceeded my expectations.

I've got a 400D and it will start and run on gas just fine. When switching over to diesel she completely dies. If the throttle is held wide open when you switch to diesel she will run wide open. As soon as you back the throttle off it dies. Any suggestions?
@reeseholler923 жыл бұрын
It sounds like an issue with the rack. If it runs on diesel at WOT its not a diesel to pump supply problem. If possible, I'd look through the fill tube and look for free rack movement.

If you're lucky, you can get at the rack through the oil fill tube. If you're unable to get it to move through there with the help of some penetrant, itll have to come apart unfortunately. I guess I'm making an assumption that the governor arm on the side of the pump moves freely
