The US doesn't have the best testing in the world at all. In fact their UVA tests have not been updated for over twenty years. The EU has the best UVA tests. They do however have the best water resistant testing. When Australia rejigged our SPF testing because we have a huge hole in the ozone layer directly above us, we used the EU standards for UVA and the US standards for water resistance. Which is good because we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

I’m Korean, and I remember being shocked when the scandal broke, especially since it seemed that barely any domestic news sources seemed to be paying attention to the issue. …And then I went to look up the list of brands affected, and I couldn’t even recognize a single name. 🙄 Unfortunately a big part of problem seems to be the fact that many of the so-called “k-beauty” brands popular in the west aren’t actually established companies with a proven track record who own actual labs and make their own formulas, but more newer brands founded by people with no experience in cosmetic chemistry just hoping to cash in on the buzz.

I have lived in Korea since 2018, and I have never heard about brand purito 😅 I think a lot of things that are popular as korean brands in the West are marketed JUST for the West. Take Beauty of Joseon for example. No one used it or even was able to buy it here until it got so overwhelmingly popular, and only then could you actually get it online in Korea. Now it's available in stores - but Koreans have 'their' brands, and rarely go for this one. So there is also that there are two markets, the 'k-beauty' and actual cosmetic used by Koreans.

I feel like people in the west generally don't understand the depth of beauty culture in Korea. Both men and women are pretty heavily scrutinized if they dont look within a certain margin of "attractive" to the point that being chubby or tan might be the literal barrier between you and your dream job(companies often REQUIRE a photo with your resume). Many Korean women wear SPF arm covers and hats in long car rides/in the sun, on top of having their spf on them and reapplying often. Koreans are also super ready to let bad actors of many forms crumble and fall. If purito hadn't been that transparent about the process they would have lost all trust in the korean general public.

I think that K-beauty was bolstered by the sunscreen issues eventually, and a lot of the credit for this goes to Purito for showing just how a company should handle a problem product - honesty, refunds and transparency. Add to that the deeply felt love for K- beauty products by influencers large and small, and it wasn't long before KB bounced back and became even bigger. With the exception of shaving products, I've used and reviewed KB products exclusively for several years. I honestly can't imagine ever going back to a European or American brand again. 90% of UV radiation can pass through clouds! You’re not necessarily protected on cloudy days. Thick clouds do reduce the amount of UV getting through but the density and even different cloud types can affect how much gets through! Check the current UV level where you live online if you’re outside - don’t rely on clouds as any indication of what the UV is or which sunscreen to use (just use the bloody good one,lol). I’m in Australia and had melanoma when I was 22 so I’m probably a -bit- lot more gung-ho than most people. Gung-ho when it comes to UV is just sensible really! And don’t forget other indirect UV reflecting off your surroundings like sand and buildings etc etc.

Most of the korean sunscreens manage to get SPF>50 values with only 7-8% total filter content, which is a super high filter efficiency, I wonder wether other coscmetic chemists are not curious, maybe jealous, how they do it, it's about half of what the average sunscreen EU and AUS uses, so far Ive never seen an EU SPF50 sunscreen with 60, while these Korean sunscreens have SPF values around 50-55. Even in advertising here they are promoted as being "SPF50+", which they are not. I do think that there is still a problem that many brands have no to little knowledge about cosmetic chemistry themselves. Just recently Beplain claimed to have an SPF105 and UVAPF65.9, proven by some tests, even though it was just a repackaging of a product with SPF50 and UVAPF17.28. Later it appeared this was incorrect. Its nice that they are transparent, but that doesn't mean its correct what they claim. This is what Odile told me: "when I interviewed the Korean regulatory professional for the video on the SPF controversy, he straight-up told me that this type of incidents happens all the time with fast beauty brands in Korea because most of them are started by people with no background in cosmetology and no prior industry experience, so the manufacturers that sell them these ready-made formulas can effectively tell them anything they want to close the deal and they'll just believe it, no questions asked. I've heard the same thing from several industry professionals over the years. When Korean beauty started to gain momentum a few years ago, the institutions decided to lower the barrier to entry for starting a beauty brand so now anyone can basically start a beauty brand in Korea with a small initial investment. There are tons of national programs and initiatives created to put in contact manufacturers and brand owners so it doesn't take much expertise to launch a product on the market nowadays. It might sound great on paper because it’s a system that helps forster young entrepreneurs in a way, on the other hand I find that this phenomenon led to less innovation, a flood of copycat products with nearly identical formulas and questionable marketing practices, possibly stemming from genuine ignorance / lack of experience."
@amandak.4246Ай бұрын
why would a sunscreen need to be over 60 spf to say 50+? that's not what more than 50 means lol
@peterkloostermannАй бұрын
@@amandak.4246 In Europe and Australia a sunscreen needs to test at SPF60 or more to get the "SPF50+" label, an SPF50-59 would be labelled as "SPF50" www.tga.gov.au/products/medicines/sunscreens/interpreting-sunscreen-labels and this taobe.consulting/european-regulations-sunscreen-products/ in america and asian countries the "+" only means its over 50.
@peterkloostermannАй бұрын
@@amandak.4246 Yes that is what the "+" in Europe and Australia means. For a sunscreen to get the SPF50+ label, its needs to have a measured SPF of at least 60. A measured SPF50-59.9 would be labelled as "SPF50". So technically the Korean sunscreens sold in Europe as "SPF50+" do not comply to the minimal requirements to get the "+" according the EU and AUS rules. You can look it up in the tga or colipa guidelines. That why the UVAPF of an EU sunscreen that has the UVA seal also needs to be at least UVAPF20, one third of 60. In America and Asian countries the "+" indeed only means a measured SPF above 50.
@kool2btrue28 күн бұрын
It's worth pointing out that EU and AUS sunscreens also require a minimum UVAPF factor of 1/3 their stated SPF. Essentially an SPF 50 sunscreen must be at least PA++++. that is not a requirement for Korean sunscreens, most of which I assume barely meet the PA++++ factor if at all, with those low concentrations. The higher concentrations help beef up the UVAPF factor. An SPF 50+ sunscreen requires a UVAPF factor of 20, which a surprising amount of Korean sunscreens would probably fail. Again, there is an absolute 0% chance Korean brands beat Loreal at making the thinnest sunscreen with the least filters. It is not about jealousy or laziness. Loreal is a billion dollar corporation that can fund unparalleled research and has found many of the modern filters, it's the simple fact they operate in a more regulated market.

i loved that purito sunscreen so much so ngl i just wanted it back. that AND the klairs airy fit one. so since both were gone, i was so sad. i didnt really care all that much abt the scandal at the time. but by the time they came back, i think i didnt care for the reformulations. i had already moved on and i think i found other sunscreens that i liked better by that point. i think i retried the reformulations for both and i just didnt like them the same. still love purito and klairs but they were also some brands i started out my k-skincare journey with, so within that year, i had already moved on to other brands and found new favorites. still love both purito and klairs a lot tho and im glad that purito is having a bit of a rise again as deserved !!

I'm a Fitzpatrick 2 and took an 11 day beach holiday to Crete this year. I used Makeup Prem as my all over sunscreen with no burning or tanning; the only colour I came back with was a few more freckles 😊 So I'm happy with that 👍 maybe the scandal really did benefit us

This is interesting. I think about how some anti sunscreen people kept saying sunscreen causes cancer however I wonder if it’s more a matter of some products not actually being up to the actual spf and ending up with cancer as a result. I mean if you’re buying a 50 spf and it’s only an 18 or 19 spf that’s terrible. For many years a 25 or 30 spf was considered good so what spf were those in reality. 🤔

I paniced when I saw this fearing another scandal. I did love the Purito sunscreen that started this. I didn't get burned, because if I went out in heavy sun I used a less elegeant French Sunscreen (Bioderma Photomax). I am back to using Korean sunscreens - Klairs and BOJ and Scinic Mild. I like that they are unscented and no alcohol. They won my trust back.

people always rail against our system in the us but this is the risk of low regulation of sunscreens. i think it's more of an issue with the korean government and not of purito or the other companies specifically.

Ngl when it comes to sunscreen I always use the ones I can find in store in my country and are well known. Sunscreen is important and you need to do your research on it if you’re wearing it for its intended purpose - protect you from harmful sun rays. But this is also an issue of different regulations in different countries. In Canada korean sunscreens aren’t approved bc of the standard procedures of testing products and bc sunscreens are considers a non-prescription drug. The companies need to apply for testing if their ingredients aren’t in the approved lists, and it seems that there’s no plan for these companies to try and get approved. Maybe for good reason after this video

I just want to say that I LOVE Purito daily soft touch sunscreen! I personally think this is one of the best sunscreens. I do trust them now and their sunscreen has become my daily go to sunscreen all summer long.

I can't wait to finish my baby's Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen to try a Korean sunscreen. They're somehow even more affordable than popular high-end western brands and I'm glad they're now available where I'm from! I wasn't even interested in them because of the Purito scandal some years ago so it's good to know kbeauty is trying to improve. Also, being the korean face masks evangelist I am, there's no way I'm not trying one of their sunscreens, knowing korean brands have topnotch reputation among us rosacea sufferers.

I wouldn't say Krave (Liah Yoo) handled the controversy well. They were very shady about it, and then made a mediocre sunscreen with old filters.

I be one of those people that can't use mineral sunscreen on my face - it breaks me out - and would be so frustrated trying to find something affordable to protect my skin - so Korean sunscreens were my saviour because frankly it's either this or nothing. Pleasant to apply, absorbs so easily aaaaaaaaaand don't break the bank.
@razzrasy554629 күн бұрын
I can’t use mineral sunscreens either. I don’t break out but it irritates my skin, I would feel slight burns. I only use chemical sunscreens.

Back then my favorite sunscreen was the keep cool one and they had the absolute worst reaction to all of this. They were threatening to sue youtubers and other people who questioned their sunscreen. Then of course they revealed their sunscreen also wasn't what was advertised and took their time offering refunds.

This is why I've switched to Japanese formulated sunscreens from Korean sunscreens. Japanese formulations are so much more reliable and more lightweight -- none of that gimmick Korean formulations have. I've used Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Essence for 4 years and I've never looked back! Please try it 🙏 A lot of dermatologists on youtube prefer Japanese sunscreens too

I jumped the k-beauty wagon with missha and skin79, Holika Holika etc. But in the end, I always went to japanese or tai sunscreens since they are REALLY waterproof + I could get very fine powder formulas, or whitening aspects with it. I am a NW10 on the MAC scale and I live in the Amazon forest, umid and 37ish celsiu all the year. Never got burnt

@@jaciecarter7482 just be careful with the delivery company. Lovely to see that plane use a similar legislation system to Korean functional skincare, if it’s close enough in how it works then they don’t need as thorough testing…one was discovered as to not work whatsoever unfortunately due to the loss of life (RIP to all those that lost their lives and the friends and family effected) and now Korean Sunscreen (as well as some American brands) luckily not due to mass sudden damage done but still damage to people’s skin especially where cancer is a potential so indirectly (as in over time prolonged use of the product as their only sunscreen, which is possible with the Korean Sunscreen craze in the 2010s) still loss of life. It just truly makes you think what else could be going on with products that we use and what legislation they follow especially if they have a similar system to the two mentioned above cause it makes sense for businesses to use this model and as Korean Sunscreen shows that even the companies themselves might not be away of the issue, obviously some of the businesses might be aware but it was obviously due to the use of a middle man for making and testing the products which is an obvious conflict of interest that increased the chances of corners being cut to save money! Just another story to prove that Greed and especially the corporate kind is truly a SIN!!!

I’ve been using k sunscreen for years. It’s just more gentle on my extremely acne prone skin. Because of medication I have to wear it daily and completely cover up due to photosensitivity. Won’t ever go back to western sunscreens.
