If only it was that simple. I saw a programme yesterday where an MP was questioning a top civil servant and asking why the boats were not being turned back as they landed, as you rightly say. Of course the answer was absolute gobbledygook. The civil servant huffed and puffed and spoke for 10 minutes and didn’t actually say anything! It was all “the correct protocols have to be followed” and “it isn’t possible to take certain actions at this time”. Did you ever watch “Yes Minister”? Sir Humphrey was a master at never giving an answer.
