If one's definition of "true bodybuilder" includes "no tatoos, hair cut like Reg Park's, dresses like Reg Park, able to speak like Reg Park, behaves like Reg Park", then, yep, Reg Park is a "true bodybuilder". However...as someone who's been a bodybuilder himself for fifty years (I'm age 65, began at age 15 in 1971), who has no tatoos, who has always tried to be well-dressed and well-groomed, tries to be articulate, and has always sought to behave subduedly in a public gym out of civility toward others there... and, as someone who has always appreciated Reg Park's physique... that description doesn't define "true bodybuilder" for me. For me, a bodybuilder is anyone seriously committed to developing a proportionately-muscled and relatively lean physique, period. However that person otherwise behaves, speaks, dresses, or appears is beside the point. I might not share or might even despise his lifestyle preferences, his behavior, and his character, but, to me, he's nonetheless a "true bodybuilder" since the goal of bodybuilding is exactly that, "building the BODY." "Physical culture" is what it says, "culture of the PHYSICAL." The ancient Greek "sound mind in a sound body" philosophy is, I've agreed for decades, commendable, but that philosophy isn't "true bodybuilding" nor does it define "true bodybuilding". Bodybuilding can be utilized as a tool to achieve the "sound body" aspect of that philosophy, but bodybuilding does not equate to being that philosophy.

If he did, he may have experimented with them in the 60's or only used them near the end of his career. Jerry Brainum has an excellent video on Generation Iron on why bodybuilders likely didn't use steroids before the 1960's. It probably gets a little iffy after 1955 but from everything I have come across, they hadn't become common until the mid-60's.

Steve Reeves had the greatest physique - in my humble opinion. Reg Park is number 2 overall in my book, only because I don’t believe, he was natural. I have a poster of him standing between Dave Draper and Arnold, hanging in my home gym. I had posters of Reg in my home gyms for almost 25 years. If he somehow achieved that physique naturally, than he indeed would be the best ever, because all the other guys had to take steroids, to be able to compare to him. I find this to be very unlikely.

I think some people find it difficult to believe that Reg Park was a natural because they failed to make great gains like Reg. What these people might not know is that people like Reg and Steve Reeves were 'naturals" what some bodybuilding experts call mesomorphs. In my over 80 years of life I've met dozens of men in Sarawak (Malaysia) who despite having never lifted weights were much bigger and stronger than me. A few that did take up bodybuilding in the 1960s went on to make much better gains than my 30 lbs in three years. Indeed, even before they took up weight training they were bigger and stronger than me because I'm very light boned (6" wrists) with narrow clavicles, etc., a classic ectomorph. Having read that Reg from the very beginning trained extremely hard and with his superior genes, diet, bodybuilding knowledge, etc that he weighed 225 lbs I don't find this hard to believe that he did it without steroids. I don't how how much he weighed when he first started training but I guess his weight would certainly have been more than my 150 lbs (a gain of 30 lbs albeit not all of it muscle after three years training) probably around 180 lbs? Why anyone find it hard to believe that Reg could gain 45 lbs after training for three years escapes me. I've seen photos of him weighing 240 lbs. Although he was huge, today's fans would say he was smooth. Would he have been smooth had he taken steroids? Just my two cents ... .

He must of been in his late 50’s early 60’s here. Still built like a beast. He’s 6’1 even if he never lifted he would be lean 190 to 210. Combine that with weights, if I can gain 40/50 pounds natural and still stay around 14% bf. And my genetics are subpar I’m 5’10 on a stretch. If I can achieve that. They what can this guy this specimen achieve, though I have taken gear now. I have a foundation. But some what regret it. Don’t sell yourself short. Eat plenty of beef milk cheese butter and eggs. LOL, 100% fiction. Only a child would be that naive. And you don't know Reg and his competitive nature if you think this is true. Reg did find out that competitors were using Steriods and he felt justified in taking them or he would not have been able to compete with those who were taking them, that's just common sense. Reg also felt justified in not speaking about it because his fellow competitors who were using were hidden this fact from the public. This interview was done in the early 90s today you could not get away with it as they did then. The truth is out there now.

@@gopherstate777 Searle released Nilevar in 1956 and Ciba released Dianabol in 1958. So nobody was using synthetic anabolic steroids before 1956...they didn't exist. Most likely only the very highest level US West Coast bodybuilders knew of them by 1958. Park weighed 226 when he won Mr. Britain in 1949, 214 when he won Mr. Universe in 1951, 215 when he won it the second time in 1958, and 216 when he placed 3rd in 1971. @@gravitationalconstant not entirely true there, John grimek has admitted to experimenting with synthetic testosterone back in the 40’s
@gravitationalconstant
@gravitationalconstant 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrdealx He had expressed interest in it in the 40s, but had no access to it as it wasn't FDA approved until 1950. Even then it was only made in small batches for research purposes. The only test that he would have had access to was that mail-order stuff marketed as oral testosterone which, as you know, was totally ineffective. John Ziegler, doctor for the US weightlifting team (York), learned about test injections from the Soviets at the 1954 World Weightlifting Championships in Vienna. He then persuaded York lifters John Grimek, Jim Park, and Yaz Kuzahara to try it. Not sure what the initial effects for them were but apparently they weren't significant enough to continue to use it as they ceased any further test experimentation for the rest of the 50s. Ziegler started experimenting on his team with Dianabol in 1958 and by the early 60s it had spread to the bodybuilding world. So most likely, the first anabolic steroid use by western bodybuilders began with Dianabol in the late 50s/early 60s rather than test.

He was a LIAR. No human being can put on 30lbs of muscle in wait for it THIRTY DAYS. In 1949. Had he stayed at 196 at his height YES. Believable even 210 in top condition. But going from 196 to 226 in 30 days. Forget it. All the beef and hard training in the world will not do that.. Once you do something impossible like that NO. Your natty status goes up in flames. To anyone like me who has studied human Physiology. And knows what is and what ISNT possible naturally. I dont believe he took much. None of them did in those days. He had great genetics and a big natural structure. But again no human being can put on 30lbs of muscle in 30 days. It's that simple. That's what outted him.

@@fender1000100 First off, he never claimed that he put on 30 pounds of muscle in 30 days. Keep in mind that in 1949 steroids were virtually unknown. Sure, there were crude versions of them since the mid-1930's. It was rumored that the Nazis gave them to some of their soldiers. And, more than likely, the Russians were developing them by war's end. But 1949 Britain was still coming out of the war, very few people had money, and doubtful Park could have procured anything experimental. CIBA didn't develop Dianabol until 1958. So, you're making a claim you can't back up. I think that if Park DID put on 30 pounds in 30 days, damn sure it wasn't all muscle. Probably a fair amount of fat, but Park had the frame, the genetic potential, and the will to shovel food down his throat to pack on the pounds. He was one of the first power bodybuilders of his day--Grimek and Ross came before him, but Park was far stronger--and heavy training was something he favored. In any case, Park was one of a kind and one of the greatest builders ever.

@Jason Stewart I'd probably have to agree with you.. The only reason I may give him the benefit of the doubt is because his body was big and muscular but not very defined.. It is possible to gain some decent muscular bulk without drugs.. But no way in hell can you be massive and lean at the same time without drugs, that just ain't happening, not even if you have the best genetics in the world..

Reg made unbelievable progress between when he won the Mr Yorkshire and the Mr Britain. He moved to London to train and he exploded in months. Testosterone Prop was also being used in London a lot by doctors for all kinds of ailments since it had just come out. It was in fact being hailed as a miracle drug at the time by many.

Samson was not mythical. Hercules was.. not Samson. This guy wants to get rid of anabolic steroids. Not sure what to think about that(?). I know, bodybuilders of today abuse the Hell out of steroids.. while, ditching symmetry for size. During the Golden Age, many *"used"* steroids.. and some were using quite a lot.. but, they always maintained the Classic Physique look. Today---- most cannot do a 'vacuum' to save their lives.. with their huge insulin guts and being 5-10 or so and weighing 300lbs. That mess started in the mid-1980's and escalated really quickly to what it has become, today.

looking at his pics when competing he wouldn't even place in a local show in the middle of nowhere ,we have come a long way with nutrition equipment how important rest is .Yes and of course the steroids well it doesn't matter how much juice you stick in your ass if you don't train right eat and sleep nothing is going to happen.We as Humans want to be bigger better stronger faster its in our nature to compete to push things to the limit, So Reg was from an era with no gear and looks like shit compared to todays standards. l wonder if he was born 30 years later he would have taken gear well it depends on how much he wanted to be Mr Universe or Mr nobody
