Poor Reggie Miller. Or alternatively, depending on your fandom, take that Reggie Miller! The guy was 38, running out of chances to win a title, and this night did not go his way. But there's so much more going on in this series.
We've got Rick Carlisle coaching the Pacers, against a Piston's team that fired him a year prior. We've got a classic Reggie Miller three pointer to win game one. We've got Rasheed Wallace guaranteeing a game two win for the Pistons. And we've got the surprise ending of this game...should I say it or leave it for the video? If you've read this far, you probably know what happened. And, I mean, it's from 2004... top 10?? there are only 2 other blocks/sequences of blocks I can think of that are even in the conversation as being "best" of all time: 1) Lebron... 2) Pippen's 3 straight blocks on Charles Smith. In terms of importance, I'd rank them: 1) Lebron 2) Pippen 3) Prince But in terms of its impressiveness, Tayshaun's is the most spectacular block of all time. The dude made up 20 feet of ground in two strides, sent it 20 feet away from the basket so that no trailer could get the putback, and kept it in bounds. Incredible

I saw Reggie Miller play at the old LA Sports Arena against the Clippers when I was 9 years old. This was probably 1991-92 season. At one point, He shot a 3, got fouled, landed on his knees and he swished it. He instantly became one of my favorite players!!

i lived through that era and still watch religiously today. the games back then were more intense on a regular basis then they are now. every possesion was critical, games were close and grinding. today there seem to be a lot more blowouts and wasted possessions. i understand the love for more scoring, but i prefer the intense grind.

I remember watching this live and I thought Reggie was going to for sure lay it up and Indiana would eventually take the game in OT, but then I witnessed the greatest block in NBA history up until LeBron's Finals block on Iggy. This entire playoff run by the Pistons was my introduction into basketball and just thinking about how the team was back then, it makes me feel so nostalgic. This Pistons team was magical and so unique, and I'm glad they get the respect they get.

When the Pacers lost this series, I was so heartbroken for Reggie. I loved seeing that core play and I was hoping Reggie could retire in glory. Pacers haven't seemed that fun to watch ever since. People are so nostalgic for this period of the NBA but don’t even realize that it’s bc of the defensive changes around this time (illegal defense to 3 seconds, no more hand checking) that the scoring was so low. One of my favourite champion teams of all time is the 04 pistons. Such a well rounded, highly skilled starting 5 in Billups, Hamilton, T Prince, Sheed, and Big Ben. All of them brought something different to that team that I don’t think any other players could replicate in the nba at that time. Billups was one the better All Around Point Guards in the league at that time, Rip was A scoring machine, T Prince was arguably one of the best 2 way players at the time (which stats don’t do him enough justice) Sheed in his prime was one of the most talented big man in the league, and Big Ben to this day is that 1 in a million type defensive player that would absolutely bruise you to bone on every play. Such a great well rounded team, they didn’t have one superstar or a super team just 5 highly skilled killers who all simultaneously perfected their craft that season

T Prince doesn’t get enough love man, the guy was an absolute beast on both ends of the court. Although he never cracked above .9 blocks a game he was an extremely pivotal piece in that 04 pistons club, with career highs in Points, Blocks, FT%,FTs made, 2P%, FG%, and most importantly He played and STARTED in all 82 games in the regular season ontop of an impressive 23 playoff games played and started as well. In the span of 03-09 he accomplished that feature 5 times again ( in 03 he had 80/82 starts) followed by another two times in 07-08, 12-13. Guy was an absolute animal and deserves his Flowers. 4x all defensive and we’ll deserved !!!!

Except the viewership of those games was often incredibly low which is why the league doesn't want to see those games very often. Similar to the 90s in years Jordan wasn't in the Finals, ratings took noticeable dips so while it's fun to glorify the defenses of those days in reality the viewership showed fans weren't going to watch in huge numbers.

Every time Detroit won the NBA finals, they have upset a smooth transition of power from the east to the west. It looked like Toronto finally took that spot, but we’ve yet to see if the pistons can put it all together again. When Lebron retires, there might be a team preventing Taytum and the Celtics from being so dominant.

Thanks for the recent Pistons love, Clara and co.! Just random thoughts from a Pistons fan who loved this era: This is probably my single favorite play in Pistons history. In the history of Detroit sports coaches in general, Carlisle may have gotten the rawest deal. Who knows how the Pistons fare in an alternate timeline where they keep him: Do they win a title at all? Do they manage to stay relevant longer? Do they win multiple titles? It's hard to argue with the results the very season after he left, but he had a basement-dwelling team trending in that direction anyway. Just a weird thing with those '00s Pistons: They won the Central Division title 6 times in 7 years. Ben Wallace won DPoY 4 times in 5 years. The only year both of those things didn't happen...was the year they won the championship. I have nothing but respect for Reggie Miller...always seemed like a cool dude. I'm obviously thrilled that the Pistons won the title in '04 and got back to the finals in '05, but I don't take any particular pleasure in those being Reggie's last two seasons, and on some excellent Pacer teams. Aside from Reggie's career ending vs. Detroit...his very first playoff appearance was going up against the defending champ Bad Boys, who swept the Pacers in the first round en route to a repeat in 1990! From Reggie/Pacer fans' perspective, I imagine that one doesn't hurt as bad...they were an 8-seed and not expected to be any kind of serious contenders. But it's just kind of interesting to see the Pistons' most recent three finals appearances go through Reggie, and that the first and last of those series were Reggie's first and last playoff games. Oh, and to follow up on Rasheed's "guaranteeing victory" moment, that did indeed get printed. As with a lot of sports bars nationwide, you'll see a lot of the most iconic Michigan sports-related headlines and photos put up around the walls of local establishments, and "GuaranSheed!" is one of the staples.

If one is a basketball fan one has to atleast respect Reggie Miller. He was loyal to the end to his team, never jumped ship or ring chased. He is also one of the best shooters of all time! Without Reggie the Pacers wouldn't be what they are! When someone says 'Indiana Pacers' on the street randomly Reggie Miller is the name that always comes to mind instantly.

I was watching this game on TV when it happened and I jumped up outta my seat. What a great block from tayshaun that saved that series.. I was 17 in 2004 when they won and was a big fan.. Ben wallace is my all time favorite player. Undersized at center but still was a beast. But tayshaun played his role perfectly and doesn't get enough credit for guarding kobe during our championship run. Tayshaun was also 6'9 like Ben but tay had a reach of 7'2"

I grew up where my teenage years were right in the thick of this. I'm from Cleveland, so seeing this Detroit lineup year after year was devastating. Sheed, Ben, Rip and Billups all were East starters in '04 and Tayshaun should've been right next to him. I also want to say Prince finished high in the DPOTY ranking in '04. Haven't looked it up, curious if anyone calls me on that.

You should do a rewind of Game 1 between the Lightning/Blue Jackets 5 OT Game. I'm a sucker for hockey rewinds and this game had so much significance. I believe it was the first game of round 1 of that playoffs in the Toronto Bubble. Tampa Bay overcoming their demons from last playoffs after being swept by Columbus in 2019. The beginning of the Lightning dynasty as well as an incredible individual performance by Brayden Point. A game so long that under the circumstances of playing in one arena it postponed the Bruins/Hurricanes. Would be a great episode. Also I'd like to see a retrospective that goes into details about all the outside factors going on that year outside of sports.
