@Bartonovich524 жыл бұрын
@ Glassback 40. Debunked like a decade ago. Electric cars.. the only cars where people seem to be so concerned about where the materials it’s made of came from. As if somehow we are just imagining that it’s tons of iron ore and coking coal and bauxite all smelted with gigawatts of electricity that makes the material for internal combustion engines..... which themselves are useless but for the fuel that just magically appears in the tank every week (no seismic exploration, drilling, pumping, piping, refining, cat cracking, or distribution... that’s all imaginary too). Any wonder they have to lie and show photos of Chilean copper strip mines as “lithium mines” for batteries that require barely any of the 100% recyclable material.
@Bartonovich524 жыл бұрын
@ Adam Smith. Buy a 40 foot motorhome instead and tow the EV with it to charge the batteries. I don’t get why people buy huge trucks to tow trailers that they then have to daily around town for something they only use for towing a few days out of the year. Almost everyone drives less than 100km a day except for the rare exceptions. It’s like the OP said.. EVs are an attack on manhoods that trucks validate... all those pretty pavement princesses that never haul or tow anything.

They're usually generared by AI based on trending/popular keywords from social media, so you're almost guaranteed to be specific enough to sell a shirt or two. Due to how diesel and gasoline are taxed relative to each other here, they end up being similarly priced (but varies by state/province), so you'd either have to drive extremely long distances, or have something with a massive engine to offset the initial cost premium of buying a diesel engine vehicle. As a result, diesels are mostly associated with pickups, and commercial and industrial vehicles. I'm not sure it's even possible anymore to buy a brand new diesel passenger car.
@klaspeppar56194 жыл бұрын
@@DeLorean4 Sweden (where I live) has some F:ed up penalty tax for diesels too, in Sweden we have a yearly vehicle tax, a XC70 D5 would cost an equivalent to $700 (USD) every year to keep it registered, while a 2.4T or T5 would only cost an equivalent of $240 (USD). My V50 does actually get hit by the penalty tax (or at least not as bad) as it is classed as an "environmentally friendly" car ("miljöbil") with it's low fuel consumption and "revolutionary" start stop technology (which is very primitive by today's standards), it only costs me about $110 (USD) in yearly tax. I have average an impressive 4.2 liters per 100Km (about 56MPG US) mixed driving. New cars have straight up ridiculously high yearly vehicle taxes the first 3 years.

And in Ireland we get taxed on CO2 emissions... also our insurance costs are stupid. I've a 2.0d4d, and it is €380 tax per year. Still, most cars on Irish roads are diesel.

Pretty much all diesel owners proselytize those who own gasoline powered vehicles... bragging about their fuel economy, how reliable they are, how they save them money, the torque, etc etc etc. Truth is, very little of it is based in reality. The total extra cost of a diesel vehicle.. purchase price, interest, taxes, etc.. is considerably higher than a petrol vehicle. The cost of operation is no longer as low as it once was with diesel often being more expensive than gasoline, plus DEF, plus reduced fuel economy from emissions systems (the whole raison d’être for Dieselgate) meaning that you are well over 200,000 km before you’ve amortized the extra upfront cost in fuel savings. Even more if you consider what that extra money could have been doing for you in investments or debt reduction in the meantime. And about the time you break even is when the expensive repairs come in. Injectors, glow plugs, HP fuel pumps.. and annoyances that will instantly send a petrol vehicle to the scrapper but are somehow tolerated on diesels like oil burning and difficulty cold starting. Diesels don’t really last any longer, either. People see that they last long because other people keep them long or they have been highway driven all of their lives and assume theirs will last long as well. Well.. any car will last long if you take care of it. Lots of gasoline powered cars with over a million km on them. It’s just that people scrap them because the repairs are worth more than the vehicle.. and somehow having paid more for a diesel mean it’s worth it to put several thousand dollars into it. Even though it’s only worth a few thousand more than the gasoline powered car and with purchase price, interest, and taxes has lost way more money overall. They aren’t better for the environment, either. Low fuel consumption does not mean it’s better. If it did.. we’d all be driving two stroke cars. No.. the emissions are terrible. They are still terrible even with all of the junk added onto them. Add some oil burning and an EGR delete in places where they either don’t know or don’t care.. and they are rolling environmental disasters. Rolling coal isn’t that bad.. it’s just particulates that settle quickly. It’s the NOx that’s the real killer. So no.. I don’t and will never own a diesel regardless of what diesel apostles tell me.

@@Bartonovich52 i disagree, Diesels can actually make economic sense despite being more expensive to own, it all depends on how much you drive. Think about it, if it is truly uneconomical 60% of the heavily taxed Swedish Market would not be Diesels. Diesel engines (apart from the expensive "add-ons") are generally more reliable than petrol engines, due to the lower revs putting less strain on the engine. Particle filters are now being added to Petrols too. The modern Diesels are ridiculously good and pretty clean, the NOx is an issue one which has been taken seriously, that is why new diesels feature "urea" systems running whet DPFs and that is why most new cars are mapped to be able to run on HVO100, the "urea" system is yet another thing that will eventually break but it cuts down NOx like nothing else, apart from HVO-100. The 1.6D PSA power train was the first Volvo to feature "urea" and the low emissions is why it got the "miljöbil" stamp in the overly environmentally concerned country that is Sweden. I don't really care what you think, if you change your mind or not. But you definitely won't change mine, this stubborn, missfitt of a mechanic who spent half a year building engines. I like diesels, and i think that there is definitely a place for them, because of the higher torque you can make them smaller but still powerful enough to keep up with traffic.

Having grown up around the corporate world of Cummins, the cult of personality that has grown around the brand once Chrysler adopted it into Dodge/Ram Trucks is one of the most hilarious things ever. Even that "Crap" take on the logo is funny.
