As much as I enjoyed a classic RCR review I think the final verdict missed the mark… a base AWD hybrid that gets 50mpg for $25000 is insane value and for people that just want a car that they can drive care free for years I don’t think it can be beat. Sure you could spend 3-4k more on a Prius.. but why would you if you don’t have to?
@Mikeyridesit Жыл бұрын
For my 86-90 mile RT commute every day this is the way to go. Kitted out with all options and accessories I wanted was 28,778 vs a up trimmed Prius that is over 36,000. If you can live without AWD, the MSRP drops to $22,800 - only a $1300 premium over the regular Corolla. That's where this makes the most sense. This is the best car for getting from point A to B. Its 100% Japanese as in components and assembly, its cheap, it has a high quality interior albeit not fancy, has all the good safety features that make it almost self driving on the highway, and the driver seat is relatively comfortable and spacious, also it should be noted it gets better than 50 mpg I get closer to 60 if I do the speed limit, and over 80 if I hyper mile. They have now added all wheel drive which makes it even better for commuting. This the best car you can buy if you just need to get to work everyday reliably and cheaply. You undersold it.

@Acoustic_Theory Жыл бұрын
It also has the least total lifetime environmental impact, because the battery pack is smaller and the rest of the car can be made from common materials that don't need to be highly refined in an energy-intensive process. It's a way to have the convenience of a gas car with better overall economy. (Was it a PHEV? I missed that part, but if you don't want to be left out of plugging your car into wall juice like a Good Person does, a PHEV is what you want.)

Meanwhile back in reality, more hybrids can be built with the resources it takes to build one EV so which one really reduces emissions and energy consumption the most? Probably hybrids. 10:18 It can accelerate up to 70 kph/44 mph quite easily under it's own power. It will hold its speed at 90 kph/57 mph in electic at even ground. The ICE can turn off at up to 120 kph/75 mph, but the electric motor doesn't have enough power to stay at that speed, but it deaccelerates the car a little bit less (compared to just keeping your foot of the gas pedal). The easiest way to drive this car on electric power alone is to accelerate up to chosen speed (be it 30 or 45 mph) using ICE, keep your foot off the acceleration pedal for a second, then gradually apply throttle to keep the speed and drive on electric only. I've driven at 115 kph/72 mph for like 20 or 30 kilometers going downhill on an autostrada in Italy just on electric, so it's doable, but in everyday conditions, its best to accelerate using petrol, then using electric to stay at whatever the speed you prefer. Seeing 3-4l/100km (or 60-80 US MPG) that way is not a rare sight in my hybrid CHR (which uses the same drivetrain), I would believe the Corolla to be even better since I would assume it creates less drag.

I have a 2021 Camry Hybrid LE, and they're great cars. The hybrid system works almost flawlessly, and the gas mileage is excellent. My best tank was 57 MPG, and over the 11,000 miles that I've put on it, I've averaged 50.7. Winter the MPG drops into the high 30s, usually because you have to run the heat or defrost almost all the time. Summer is when I get the best gas mileage. I've driven some Corollas over the years, and they're okay. They feel cheap though. I bought my Camry Hybrid for $27,200 out-the-door, in April of 2021. So, for not much more money, you're getting a lot more car. The Camry still has some cheapness to it, like the door materials, and the steering wheel. But I live with it.
@whette_fahrtz Жыл бұрын
You get worse gas mileage in winter because they change the gas formulation for cold weather. Running the heater costs almost nothing, just the few milliamps needed to run the fans. Your engine is making heat all the time.

Fun fact. The transmission is both a regular automatic and a CVT. It has an actual 1st gear. Once it shifts into second it's a CVT. Thus the shift cable.
@xenotiic8356 Жыл бұрын
Interesting! I gotta wonder why they did that.
@TheRealRyanWood Жыл бұрын
@@xenotiic8356 They did it so the car accelerates off the line better and drives better at low speed. Then once you're moving the more efficient CVT takes over.

The mechanical shifter linkage could be so you can put it in neutral if the battery dies. I had a Prius that blew a fusible link and you couldn't move it without replacing it.
@Ozark221 Жыл бұрын
Towing too. I worked at a big car auction and the electronic trannies would need a jump just to move 20 feet out of the way, even if it was downhill. People would get locked in cars with electric door latches, though they all have a mechanical backup hidden somewhere. Old tech has its conveniences.

Only problem I have with hybrids is the brakes. Their brake force curve is vertical at low speeds. You can't creep forward without the brakes suddenly grabbing and stopping you.

I wish Hybrids and Electric cars had a button or paddle on the steering wheel for regen only braking.
@letour32rr Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Hated that about my Chevy Volt. You had to use alot more force than a regular ICE Chevy to keep the brake pedal far enough down not to creep.
@takenpictures Жыл бұрын
@@letour32rr It is kinda the opposite with the Toyota hybrid system. You'll be coming to a smooth stop with only light brake pressure, then it switches from regen braking to normal and it is quite abrupt at times. Inching into my garage is the worst lol.

This is the future of awd for anyone not employed by the forestry service. I want a drive wheel in the rear for 5% of the time I drive my car. I don't want to pay a 20% fuel penalty all the time for it. a low speed awd that packs it in once on the move is perfect.

Great fuel economy and no range anxiety because you can fill it up in three minutes in any human settlement. There's a reason why Toyota is still going all-in on hybrid and only made an EV compliance car because they had to.

I do think hybrids and electrics (from established manufacturers) should just be current gas models retro fitted and made a trim level. Instead of a brand new model.
@PlatinumNath Жыл бұрын
That's kinda a problem actually, for some reason. Apparently retrofitting cars for those stuff is more expensive than just making a new car
@WiaderkoPiasku Жыл бұрын
That's a bad idea, as proven by BMW's hybrid 3 series and electric 4 series. Oh, and Volvo hybrids too. ICE cars have completely different layout to ground-up electrics for a reason. Batteries are heavy but can be put into the floor to get a low center of gravity and save space. With retrofits you usually get comically small trunk and terrible driving dynamics.
@Gnerko123 Жыл бұрын
@@WiaderkoPiasku the current volvo hybrids aren't that bad, they were designed witht he hybrid powertrains in mind
@WiaderkoPiasku Жыл бұрын
@@Gnerko123 but those are not retrofits anymore. Early ones were and they suffered for that. Now everyone started creating universal platforms for ICE/hybrid/electrics to use across the range, which only means that both electrics and ICE based on those will be compromised
@Gnerko123 Жыл бұрын
@@WiaderkoPiasku yes retrofits are usually not as good. You could argue that any standardisation leads to some compromises. However, those can be offset by other benefits, for example in construction costs. Thus it is a bit too simple to say that standardization only leads to worse EV’s and worse ICE cars

Kind of weird cause back in January 2021 like a month or so before used car prices went crazy I bought a 2014 Lexus ES350 with 23,000 miles on it. I could have spent that same $21,000 on a brand new Corolla. Or bought an off lease 2019 4 cylinder Camry for about $20,000. Or any number of used Prius variants for the same $20,000. Decided that the older but barely used Lexus was a better buy, nicer interior, WAY WAY WAY more engine under the hood with that 2GR-FE V6, has about 270hp, gearing that makes it MOVE from 60 to 100mph.
