REJECTED TAKEOFF! United 757-200 RWY 28L at SFO

What happened? An issue with the engine bleed air system on the 757. There is a light in the cockpit that illuminates if air is not flowing properly into the engines. The air bleeds into other parts of the aircraft and is used for other functions such as air conditioning and pressurization. These critical functions must work and as a result, the takeoff was rejected. If you would like to learn more, I would recommend looking at this slideshow (starting on slide 9): www.slideshare...
Here is the full trip report showing what happened afterwards: • United 414 SFO-EWR | T...

It happened to me once, in Guatemala... International Airport "La Aurora", 2009. We were leaving in a plane towards Panamá, it was raining, and the plane began to takeoff. Suddenly, the plane activated its airbreaks and shut down the engines, it began to slide on the runway... it felt violent. Once the plane stopped, on the runway, the pilot told us he felt a weak acceleration and a definite lack of speed. Even though his company obligated him to takeoff, he decided not to. We were taken to a hotel where we would wait for a place in other flights... We were later informed that indeed, they found a problem in the plane and it would be impossible for it to mantain flight. I don't know if this pilot is ever going to read this comment, but thank you for stopping and saving us all...

B.S. The pilot has a list of things that he is required to abort a takeoff for. The "airbrakes" were deployed by the pilot to help slow the plane and I'm quite sure the engines were not shut down. Your take of the event is completely inaccurate.

Reminds me of a really weird landing at Paris (CDG I think). I was going to Paris from JFK with my GF right before her birthday along with some friends. My GF's sister decided to surprise her sibling by saying goodbye at airport yet managing to take another flight ahead of ours to Paris. (They had never been apart for my GF's birthday, and my GF's sis didn't want the streak to end!) We landed in Paris to the surprise welcome of my girlfriend's sister, but things got really weird then for both me and my GF. My GF was in a jet lag sleep fog and thought we were back at JFK, since she had seen her sis there just not that long ago. She thought our flight had aborted while she slept, and we were missing the vacation! But wait! You get two stories for one! I was even more confused. I literally thought, "What?! We're back in JFK? I don't even remember my trip to Paris! How horrible. What a total wasted trip! I will never remember it!" Then, for good measure, my GF's sis tried to hug me and I spilled coffee on my brand new light-colored running shoes, permanently staining them. I swear, it took me the better part of a minute to figure out what was happening, because all the other friends were so excited about the surprise so nobody was explaining to my jet lag-addled mind where I was. That was supremely bizarre, and even kind of scary. I don't look forward to old age and not knowing how I got somewhere!

The pilot did a great job. Like a Qantas pilot once said, '...I do not apologize for taking everyone's safety seriously,' when he aborted his take off.

Na5iR11 I've never heard this despite knowing about Qantas accidents, but I agree with him/her saying that. The pilot made a wise decision on not taking off & keeping all the passenger's safe on the ground. The guy recording this video was a bit startled by the boom that happened when the engine's were spooling up. I would of been relieved if I was there on that flight. The fact that it happened in the tarmac, and not in the air.... I prefer a delay, than crash landing with little hope of survival any day. Cheers

Mike Petitti look at any airline with Aussie pilots at the core, QF, EK, CX are all the safest. Im a pilot for a regional airline here in Australia and the standards of slight training, flight operations, maintenance are written into Commonwealth legislation to be the highest standards on the planet. Lots of US, UK, European pilots I've met got straight into regional flying without any experience (but they have worthless degrees). To be a pilot just for a regional here in Aus you need thousands of hours bush flying or medivac work before any airline will look at your resume.

This happened to me also at SFO, when on takeoff one of four engines power dropped to 80%, and the pilot came on and told us that the plane could have easily taken off of just 3 engines, but why risk it? We skidded to a stop, turned back and ran that engine full power for 5 mins to make sure it would work. We then took off without further issues.

On another video I commented that in several videos of air accidents I've seen, there was an "insignificant" glitch - one was a warning light that would got out if you reset/rebooted it (and they did that three times before the plane crashed.) The plane has to be functioning exactly right, and the Captain makes that determination. The gauges and lights are there for a reason.

+Wolfie Its real, I can see the tiny vibrations on the camera. As a passenger travelling from time to time since childhood and playing simulators in parallel I would know its the real thing. Also check the link in the description, 2004 graphics and physics cannot mimic vibrations of the real thing. In short, don't take everything internet throws at you as reality. :) You have to cross reference a lot and look from multiple sources, glad this pilot is very experienced that he had put passenger safety in front of anything else. See you around mate. (I am hoping to enroll in a flying school in the future when I dealt with my weight problem @_@ aaand probably the costs per flight hour xD )

This happened to me at Budapest airport about 8 weeks ago. But we were just about to leave the ground. Very strange and very lucky. The pilot had a message from Gatwick to reject the take off. We skidded for a while but stopped on the edge of the grass. Nobody screamed which surprised me. First one and hopefully only one! There was a problem with a part and they had to get it from Budapest and replace it. Waited for an hour and a half then were on our way after 2 hours. Some people were freaked out and left the flight. I was just glad that Gatwick were looking after us enough to stop us in time. Thats enough reassurance for me.

just that the circle of the nose cowl and the shadow of the wing 'looking' to come together. instead of looking at the engine/nose cowl, concentrate for a while on the relative position of the winglet. nothing seems so wrong with the landing gear as to make the body go so low as to let the engine scrape.

The applied braking and the reverse thrusting caused the abrupt jolt. And the debris you saw came from the down exhaust cowling. We have seconds to make decisions, pilot did good. His initial ramp up of the engines was very slow. There was definitely issues before the take off...

I am recently retired UAL 757 Captain. I am surprised that the captain did not make an announcement to the passengers when it was appropriate to do so. I would have. The rejected takeoff is something we practice religiously in Denver annually. A lot is going on during and after the abort. After all the procedures are followed and I am safely off the runway, I would have spent 10 seconds on the PA telling the passengers what happened, something to the effect, "Folks, this is the Captain. We rejected the takeoff because of a warning lite that came on during the takeoff. I will get back to you shortly. Please remain seated." I am sure the Captain did make an announcement later on, I am only saying that I would have made it sooner.

The standing people didnt hear or see her... Eventually she gave up.... Fun fact.

I was on a Continental Express EMB-145, IAH to MEM, when the captain rejected the take-off and slowed on the runway but didn't stop. He applied take-off power again and again rejected the take-off and used the next turn off the runway to return to the gate. He had a false indication that the spoilers had deployed. I was sitting behind the wing and they didn't but he didn't know that. Took about a half hour to replace a sending unit. Got to MEM and he had to reject the landing because of a truck on the runway. Interesting trip. But I gotta tell'ya -- I did love flying those EMB jets. Very quiet and comfortable.

In addition to a warning "light" in the cockpit, I wonder if an engine failed to produced expected power? The take-off roll here seemed languid compared to other take-offs, especially for a 757 which has a slightly higher thrust rating / pound of aircraft than every other airliner.

I would suspect a compressor surge. A partial loss of airflow on one blade of the compressor. It might not affect the thrust if there is still enough air, might not affect combustion but it can lead to less cooling air going through the engine causing pressure differences or higher temperatures. Just a guess though :)

So yeah, stand up, just to make sure you go flying down the isle if something does occur. frigg'n idiots!

I will have everyone know the nightmare rejected takeoffs can be. I fix KC-135s for the USAF and if there is a rejected takeoff we must change all 8 main landing gear tires and any brakes that may be bad. The nose tires will rarely have to be changed but it can happen too. So imagine changing 8 tires and possibly 2 brakes all because of a 30 second span.
@oscarb9139
@oscarb9139 6 жыл бұрын
Dreaded_Pegasus this reject occurred at or below the speed where a pilot would have applied brakes on a normal landing. The tires suffered no more wear than they would have on a landing and the brakes were barely used, so no new brakes or tires would have been necessary.

Tax dollars wasted, A simple inspection from ground maintenance would have made sure everything was in good order. If you shit in the bathroom do they remove the toilet and put in a new one in after every guest. I dont think. 40 years USAF... never heard of such a stupid thing. Forced landings...in remote locations... yeah It happens but not an aborted take off... you just roll back on down the runway and back to the gates.

Just an FYI the remain seater call is a standard call to the cabin crew from the flight deck. if there was a serious issue that may of strongly promoted an evacuation then the flight deck would of called attention at stations or something to that effect the crew would of then be ready and waiting at the doors to evacuate if the command was given to do so or they would wait until told to stand down.

Off subject, but the most annoying thing to me is how the overhead bins are used. They normally seat the rear passengers first which makes sense, but many of these assholes store there luggage in a bin toward the front of the plane rather than over their own seats. If I am sitting near the middle I find that ALL of the bins to the front of the cabin are already full, and I have to store mine in an overhead bin five or six rows from my seat toward the rear of the plane. These selfish people do this to gain an advantage when deplaning. They get up and walk to my row or further forward and retrieve their bags that are occupying someone else's overhear bin. Meanwhile I have to wait for these assholes to go by before I can walk back to get my luggage. GRRR....

So in the description it says that an alert came up that said high temperature and or pressure. It could have been the oil temperature and pressure. On takeoff, the pilot and first officer must check for “engine instruments green” which has to do with everything within the engine. So there actually was a potentially dangerous encounter and the choice to abort takeoff may have saved all the passengers’ lives

I was on the runway control staff on Christmas morning 1975 ( I even remember the time it was 0630 - I had just come on for the day I took it since I had no kids and was single, after all it was Christmas Morning) at Castle AFB when I heard over my head set ABORT, ABORT, ABORT and sat the chute pop on a B52 G, Well the buff taxied back in and was met by me, the chute crew, and base commander. Well the captain made up some lame excuse that there was a vibration so a new chute installed and at 0800 [plus or minus 2 or 3 minutes] he was back on the hammer head again. (anyone who has ever been around the BUFF knows a chute recovery -repack - and reinstall is a FULL 90 minutes or more) these guys were good that morning they wanted to go home to their children for present opening time Well at 0800 SHARP he began his roll again, this time though he rolled past the point of no return and as he did guess what I heard ABORT, ABORT, ABORT the brakes smoked the chute popped and you could hear all 8 pressure relief valves go off on the engines as he them back fast and hard. Well this time we rolled the fire trucks and they brought him back waiting for the mag wheels to flare up because they get so hot on these buffs that I have seen that happen and no amount of water will stop the fire. (try putting magnesium out some time all water does is make it spread and flair...but it sure is pretty) Well again as line officer and as it was a safety officer the same day since everyone was off I rolled up along with that one star (guess he had no family either but he and I kind of) only this time that captain NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO POP THE LOWER HATCH. I swear till the day I leave for the great flight line in the sky I will remember the face of that one star! It was like there was a good think we had the trucks there because I thought he was going to catch fire. The one star had that hatch open and I don't think he touched the first 5 feet of stairs into the belly. I had the chute crew (who was also the same face color of the one star start removing and rolling up the chute to take it back to their shop to refold and pack again. But as the story of Santa goes with a touch of his finger he slid down the hatch and there rose suck a clatter I had to see what was the matter. Well I will be damned if the one star walked over to me and suggested that I have the fire trucks removed and put on the hammer head, the chute crew crew could go home to their families and that the captain had decided to NOT TAKE FUEL or WATER for the injectors and "wanted" to take the plane as is and "without" the parachute for stopping use. They "asked" to leave IMMEDIATELY and at 1300 hours they would be returning and at that time I was to be sure the were on spot and to escort them and the crew bus across the base to the command office and to the generals office. Well after all was said and done I can say that was the best tasting ham sandwich and chips I ever had AND shared with the general at the chow hall. He had cooled down by them and we both had a great laugh at the reason the "crew" had decided to go light a chute, no water and was determined to make that flight fly....in other words it was the generals way or jail for insubordination for not taking the flight so THEY could be home with their families

The pilot is the guy saying ‘Remain Seated Remain Seated’. This also tells the flight attendants that there isn’t an emergency. At my airline it’s ‘Cabin Crew At Stations’.

I was on an AerLingus flight departing From Shannon at 6am. We’re flying down the runway at speed. ready to lift when the air breaks and wheel disc breaks activate. The plane lurched abruptly and violently , the overhead bins open spilling stuff out onto people, passengers struck their faces on the seat backs in front of them, the plane turned sideways and kept hurling down the runway, the pilot is screaming over the PA system “F**k! F **k! Keep your seats, keep your seats!” People are crying. The plane goes off the runway slightly and has to be dragged back on. The pilots explained that there was a problem with the computer system and that we would be going back to the terminal. On the taxi back to the terminal it happened again. In the terminal, I saw the captain and first officer and I asked which of them was the one using the F word because it really didn’t do much to keep the passengers calm. Neither would fess up.
