Honestly, I've only ever beaten the first game, and there's WAY too much content in these games for me to ever play them for very long. It just gets overwhelming after a time.

I've played and beaten 1-3, but have 4 and 5 too and I completely agree. I love the series but I can understand how the reviewer felt it would get stale towards the end because Disgaea games do keep it going for a little too long. Like the fact the upped the level csp higher then 9999 is both confusing and overwhelming. I never did like the item world even though I consider myself a fan. Anyways yeah, I couldn't have said it better myself. Overwhelming.

The exclusivity is probably due to Disgaea not selling well on PlayStation here, 5 was originally gonna be the final game till it got ported to the Switch then sold way more than the PlayStation version, or so I’ve heard

Also apparently they mess up again either in making mobile gacha disgaea or somewhere else but they're making budget cuts once again so this may be the last Disgaea even though they do want to make Disgaea 7

@@Mao0039 yeah. I don't know why they felt that they HAD to do the 3D thing. It ended up being too expensive AND did not run well on the Switch. I was more then happy to play on performance mode. But yes, Disgaea 5 was a much better game overall. Purely looking at the story, I liked it better then DD2, and D3.

I will wait on the PS4 version. This is what they get for going with the weakest of the 3 consoles. This series started on a Sony console, it should have never abandoned it (here in the states). 🤦🏽

Solid review! Pretty much sums up the feeling that if you already love disgaea games then you’ll love this one too since it’s more of the same but if you don’t then you just won’t (performance issues are still a bit sad tho)

So...I just picked this up for us (fiancee and I) as we're both games and while we're looking forward to playing it we do have a slight problem with it. Why in God's name is Disgaea 6 a Switch exclusive here in the states?! Now, I don't take issue with it being on the Switch just that thousands of PlayStation fans have largely been cut off by a series they drove for years. We should have had the choice of playing this on our PS5 via backwards compatibility or our Switch on day one. With the performance issues the PS5 would have been a no brainer. What a wasted opportunity...

I think Disgaea games are tricky for some to get into. If you don’t like foraging through dozens of menus or can’t appreciate the zany characters/storylines. Then they will probably disappoint. I love all that stuff so I look forward to playing through the Disgaea series as well as get that NIS classics volume 1.

I usually enjoy Disgaea games but the performance issues... just no. If a tactical turn based game can't maintain 30fps then something is wrong. I can't justify purchasing this at full price as is, which sucks because I was really looking forward to another Disgaea.

I'm sure NISA brought it to Switch only because Sony in the west has been increasingly hostile to anime games like this, particularly anything with even a faint hint of lewdness. Nintendo does not care about it anymore, and won't do anything to censor it like western Sony has been doing.

I'm baffled at how you think the sprites look bad, especially with the hi-res ones we got with 4 onward. They look way better than this and even with their limited animation they have vastly better visual impact in combat animations & most didn't drag themselves out in D5 vs D6 where they can't seem to stop showing off they're in 3D- and running poorly. A shame but like what you like. I don't think 3D is a good replacement for 2D in many cases, including this. As for the game, I have no idea how this runs so poorly. Considering how it struggles this bad with less characters in battles when in D5 have have far more characters on screen. "oh they're in 3D, DUH." Low poly 3D models with simple cell shading with no normal mapping? Switch runs DOOM Eternal fine, Monster Hunter as well, but can't handle this? Doesn't make sense. They screwed up somewhere. They also removed so many classes & mechanics from earlier games that this feels like it's well lacking.

Haven't completed the game yet. I'm at chapter 10. I feel as if the game is lacking in a number of areas. The core mechanics are there still for sure but what the game lost and what the game gained just didn't seem like a good trade off for me. I could go on about this but I'll just leave it at that. This is an entry I would have been okay missing out on. If not for my love of the series, I'd have waited for reviews. Despite my complaints though I do feel as if I should at least finish the story. Will I come back to this one like previous titles? Who knows. I can only hope for a "complete" version on ps4 or ps5 in the far off future.

I've been a fan of Disgaea since the very first release and I've never missed a single mainline game, infact I typically buy multiple versions of the same game, for D5 I have switch, ps4 and ps4 JP... this is the first time I'm genuinely considering skipping a mainline title. I have been playing the switch Demo and the performance is unfortunately so poor it ruins the entire experience for me, flipping it to performance /balance looks like smeared vaseline on my screen, while putting it on graphics makes the game Run at 15 to 20 FPS and makes the game feel like I'm playing a slideshow. I might actually just buy the Japanese PS4 version since PS4 is not region locked

It is totally not weird that what hooked you is the progression system. Disgaea is all about the progression system. And btw, Disgaea have not been a pixel art game since D3.

@@TheGamingShelf Hand drawn 2D. It is heavily aliased though and it seems to be on purpose. I guess they want to sell the ridiculousness of some animations by upscaling sprites to look pixelated and messy. (Flonnezilla, team attacks or skills like that) It should be on purpose since they pretty much use the same drawings in the same style for the sprite and the animated avatars in the cutscenes (so they definitely have higher res sprites and could use them if they wanted to).

I am, too, and I was so disappointed by this entry. I hope you enjoyed it more than I did...Never even finished the main story, I found it so boring, and there was really nothing to strive for, since you couldn't do much developing of your characters in any meaningful way. Everything is instant gratification in this game. It's far too easy, and for me, that makes it boring.

To be honest I wish this came to PC, I've been mostly playing on PC lately and considering how the demo runs on the Switch. It would have been nice, however I really do like the Auto Battle system when it comes to grinding levels (seeing Disgaea is known for god levels). Personally I think they should go back to the 2D format because the 3D art style I think is taking up too much memory and affecting performance.

just switch to performance mode, as it fixes those issue's. and it actually looks ok on the TV in performance mode isn't as Blurry as you claim it to be.

What kills it for me as a Disgaea fan is quite notable. 1. The awful performance vs a blurry nightmare. 2. Progression is much more stilted given your starting stats. 3. There’s less than half the available classes from Disgaea 5. This game just feels lacking in so many areas.

Thanks for posting this honest review. I'd considered giving this a try but I'll probably pass for now and get into Dark Deiry instead. Or maybe fire up Ys IX: Monstum Nox. But TBH, it's going to be HARD to top Lacrimosa of Dana. That game was so damn good.

I've always been interested in this series but just never brought myself to play it. I think Colin Moriarty hit the nail on the head saying that the crazy damage numbers are off putting. I don't like how games have become inflated with numbers, bring back the days of getting 5xp for a kill in COD instead of 500

Thanks for the review, I can't get over how well the old disgaea pixel art translates to 3d models. everything looks so lovely. While I do like the series quite a bit I feel like with each entry it becomes a little more forgettable. I still plan to get it but probably not for full price especially if it's just more of the same. maybe i'll hold out hopes that they'll eventually bring the ps4 version over since yeah I dont think I could handle those frame drops (normally i don't care but seeing them in the review was pretty jarring) Keep up the good work!

I gotta admit while I loved the first Disgaea back in the day, every subsequent game has fallen flat for me and I'm not sure why. I've tried 2, 4 and 5 and just never ended up fully beating them. The gameplay is fun to a point but I think that it just being a numbers game without much strategic planning throws it off for me. Much more of a FF Tactics or Fire Emblem guy now.
