Today's video is not really a how to or DIY. More like hanging out in the shop with me. I am separating the engine from the transmission on the GTI. Also taking a few questions from a Facebook live!

If I wanted to do something crazy like use this engine in a RWD configuration. With the transmission separated off from the engine, it would basically be a matter of fabbing up an adapter plate and some other bits?

It was driving me crazy trying to figure out what everyone was saying. I went back to watch and see what I messed up. I was not tightening that bolt. The socket I was using is meant for wheel bolts. It has a plastic sleeve on the outside to protect the wheels. You were seeing the sleeve rotate. The socket never moved. HAHA

just pulled the trans off my mk3 golf 2.0. I had issues getting it out..... it gave my a hard time clearing the sub frame. the area the driver cv goes into kept getting stuck on the subframe and I couldn't rotate the trans as easy as Bentley recommended. I managed to get it out by just saying forget using the Jack to drop it on, and let use my muscles and chest to get it out. it weighed about 60-something pounds.

For daily driving, do you prefer a single or dual mass flywheel? Are the dual mass flywheels failure prone?
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
+edgeofvamp I really like DMF. But they are more prone to fail.
@edgeofvamp
@edgeofvamp 8 жыл бұрын
What would your opinion be on swapping the DMF for a SMF in a 98 audi a4 avant wagon? The wagon in question has had the secondary air injection and egr system deleted, along with a haltech 550 elite ECU putting out a respectable 240hp for the wife to daily. The current DMF is already making the annoying noises of starting to fail through first gear and needs to be replaced soon. The cost is not a factor in deciding SMF vs DMF, i have never dealt with a DMF in a car and do not know what limitations they have on a slightly moree powerful daily driver (190hp to 240). I appreciate your input and look forward to hearing your opinion.
@HumbleMechanic
@HumbleMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
Generally a SMF may make a little more noise, but it is probably not too bad. I find DMF to be a little smoother in most cases. I have driven some cars with a SMF conversion that are awful, and rattle like crazy. But many are also perfectly fine.

You mentioned the RPM sensor which was white, what is the black connector positioned directly below the RPM sensor in the same bracket, mine has been separated and has got all broken. Hope its not the a/c fan. Do you have to remove the motor to dismantle the gear box?. If I were to turbo my R motor what should I do to the box. Cheers from Australia.

I’ve thought of doing things like the cardboard thing you did and putting bolts in baggies and writing where they go Also maybe numbering sensors and the clips they belong to with like a matching number and tape where i know where they plug in to but i always thought it was like a stupid thing to do like it was a noob thing. But seeing you do this (and you do this every day) makes me feel like its a good thing to do! Ima do that from now on 👍. Specially now im getting ready to build my R32 bottom end for boost (never built an engine before) wish me luck!

It is very important to remember where the trans bolts go,...story time...I had been replacing my clutch on my 01' VR6 and after a long day of wrestling with the trans I was putting all the bolts back in and as I'm cranking on one of the bolts I hear a pop followed by a rush of coolant, turns out the coolant path way was on the other side of the bolt hole and I put the wrong bolt in, which was too long and punctured the engine block dumping coolant all over my face.

I can get a kit with drill and impact driver drill for stupid cheap at Home Depot right now. Only thing is it comes with the 2.0 batteries.. Is it even worth it? I want to eventually buy a Milwaukee high torque 1/2" Impact

Depends on the price. You can always upgrade the battery.

Not sure what price they're offering, but i haven't had any issues with my 2.0 batteries. Love my 3/8 M18 impact.

$199 Canadian for the Drill, Impact, Charger, Two 2.0 batteries and carrying bag. Might not be cheap by US standards but up here that's a steal. Normally go for $320
