I feel obliged to defend the Mayans somewhat. The whole end of the world thing was due to people realizing the Mayan Long Calendar was nearing its end. What does that mean? Well, when it happened before (twice, I think) during the Empire's run, the Mayans threw a party and started a new calendar. That's it. We know this, incidentally, both due to written records that none of the doomsayers bothered to read, and the word of Mayan descendants throughout Central and South America who were shouting this stuff at anyone who would listen during the 2012 panic.

also, as i understand, the mayan calendar was actually off by quite a bit because while they got the order of events right, the slight imperfections in the earth's tilt and orbit meant their calendar was way off of where it should have been. obviously this sort of adjustment could have been made in the process of using the calendar, but since the mayans died out, the long calendar never got updated and just got increasingly wrong over time.

1. The mayans performed very few, if any religious sacrifices. They were content to live in peace most of the time. You're thinking of Aztecs. 2. The mayan calendar NEVER signified the end of the world. The surviving maya have explained this numerous times. The calendar was simply made so that it ends at this point and has to be made anew, much like our calendars every year.

To be fair alot of people confuse mayans with the aztecs. Even during the 2012 craze they constantly used pictures of the aztec calendar instead of the mayan calendar. That's mostly because mayan and aztec culture were very similar with the only difference being those notorious human sacrifices the aztecs loved to do.

Also recall some note that, because this week technically didn't exist, nothing you did in said week would be legally held against you. Granted, I am not 100% on the veracity of this claim, so take it with a grain of salt...but it does fall into that "too stupid that it might actually be plausible" category.

the problem with 2012, is that everyone entirely misinterpreted the mayan "prediction" people saw the end of the mayan calendars cycle and said "welp that must mean they thought that was the end of the world!" when in reality it just meant their calendar cycle was going to start a new, if they had still been around until 2012, they wouldve been having partying and celebrating the start of the new cycle. they didnt actually think the world was going to end. 2012 was just a bunch of people saying "well the calendar ends here so it must be the end of the world to them!" nah it wasnt.

And while there were _some_ sacrifice due to religious beliefs, they were by and large simple (non-lethal) blood offerings to keep the world from literally ending (according to their deep beliefs). The Aztecs were the motherfukers that nobody liked, that were known to use an obsidian knife to cut open their victims and pull out their heart, and kicking their dead carcass down the steps on a routine basis. Their religious beliefs may have differed, but don't put disrespect on the Mayans like that.

Thank you for pointing out that the Bible specifically says the date of the Rapture is unknown even to Jesus. The "prophets" claiming to know the date are presuming to have more Scriptural insight than God Himself. Edit: I wasn't familiar with Robert Camping's name, but when his calculation came up in the video and the clips played with him talking, I realized I'd actually heard him explain it during an evening radio show years ago. His explanation for how he arrived at his numbers was utter nonsense; he could have contrived vastly different results with a variety of arbitrary changes.

I was raised Christian, can't remember which branch. And I believed it. Till I found an alternative theory that made more sense, and I found I didn't have an answer to... why there had been, and were, so many religions all equally certain they were right... why was this one supposedly better? I look at people, like the folks here, and I see... people who, just like all the different evolved branches of Christianity, chose a faith, chose something to believe, and stuck to it no matter what. In that way, I see no difference. Is it faith if they don't commit to believing it... I never know how to feel. Sympathy because they sincerely believed it and thought they were saving people from their "hell"? Or condemnation for humans who deliberately choose to put such unyielding, confident faith behind something that sums as, so and so told me so?

I was also raised Christian, Evangelical Lutheran to be precise, and was being groomed from an early age to be a pastor. Never believed a word of any of it though, played along until adulthood because the consequences of declaring myself an unbeliever as a child were not good. It was easier just to pretend. The most afraid I've ever been in my life was that day in 3rd grade when I finally realized that the adults around me actually believed all the nonsense Christianity espouses is real and true. It frightens me still that seemingly intelligent people can take seriously that garbage.
