Turn your volume all the way up, hold the speaker right next to your ear, and when someone nearby transmits into the repeater you'll be able to hear the tone. It may take some experience to distinguish the sounds of the tones, so practice often until you get them all memorized.

HA HA! Great Video Randy... As a Ham with a few "expensive" Radios, I can tell you that a lot of such Ham Radios does not allow for scanning of repeater tones. The same with a lot of "Bubble Pack" GMRS/FRS Walmart Radios. Only radios like the Baofengs and its many clones (B-Tech, Radioddity, etc), Quansheng and a few others would allow Tone scanning. I can tell you that none of my Yaesus, Icoms and Kenwood radios does not do Tone Scanning. Its great being a Sad Ham! Also, I do not know about GRMS Repeaters but when I got my Ham license so long ago, anyone making a repeater must register that repeater with the FCC. I do not know if it is still true today but 20,, 30 years ago, it was so. Between the FCC and the ARRL they took that information and sold a Repeater Directory, and every registered repeater was on that book with input/output, Offset, and Tone specifications to get on any Ham repeater in the USA. Now you can find that information online, I think it is RepeaterDirectory.com/org/net or something like that. And hey include some GRMS Repeaters as well. Thumbs up to you.

The first and hardest step for sad ham recovery is admitting you are a sad ham. Therefore, sir, you are well on your way and I applaud that. Here are your next steps: 1. Any comment with "as a Ham" in it is a sad ham comment - try to avoid 2. A humble brag about the cost of your equipment is a sad ham thing - try to avoid 3. An additional mention of your ham license and when you got it is a VERY sad ham thing - definitely avoid 4. Any "back in the day" comment is about as sad ham as it gets, especially if things have changed since then - take this stuff to a ham forum Keep working on it and someday you wake up and won't be a sad ham anymore!

(TYPO) Hello, I just noticed that in the video description, you appear to have neglected to include the word "how", after the word "explain", in the first sentence. Thank You for an informative video on a very interesting topic, in this video, and other recent ones as well. Recently, I have only been tinkering a tiny bit with CB radio. Although I have acquired a very inexpensive R/S HAM that was previously used, that appears to operate adequately, with only minor display LCD bleeding, I was derailed from my plan to go to Boston to obtain my HAM license, so I do not transmit on that band. I found some of your recent "funny" comments regarding the philosophy of HAM radio and it's "users" to be quite humorous. _John_ (-,-)

I found a GMRS CTCSS tone the hard way (yet not so hard) I just started at 100 and tried 103 and that was it I got lucky on that one. I haven’t yet asked for permission to use the repeater nor have tried to use it yet as permission is required for that repeater. The CTCSS scan kept stopping on different tones I was thinking it was because I was about 20 miles away not really sure if that was the problem or not.

I glad you mentioned the part about private repeaters. I recently got into an argument with a guy who firmly believes that because he has a GMRS license it gives him permission to access all GMRS repeaters whether they are open to the public or closed private repeaters. Even after showing him the exact FCC rule that states GMRS repeater owners can limit who can access a repeater he continued to say anyone can access a GMRS repeater. His exact words were "I guess you are interpreting the rules different that I am." There is no interpretation since the rules state a GMRS repeater owner can either allow the repeater to be a public use or that a repeater owner can limit who uses it. I stopped talking to him since he clearly is going to believe what he wants.

I have heard about a cheap-ass ham dude (aren't they ALL cheap bastages?) over in New England that owns a bunch of linked GMRS repeaters and charges a monthly “access” fee to play. My buddy was a paying member for a bit and sent me an older copy of the monthly access authorization email he received each month from the clever owner. The guy required you buy a specific brand /model of radio that allows the user to ENTER their own non-standard PL frequency via CPS. He then provides that unique frequency on the “access card” emailed out monthly. Think that’s nuts? You can also forget the the +5 GigoloHurts repeater offset for the input. The dude uses a monthly FRS (non-GMRS) frequency that makes it more difficult to do the Bao- Fag tone scanning guesswork to gain access.
