A short video on how to diagnose and replace an outer tie rod end on a 2008 Ram 1500. I can't stress enough about having the toe-in reset when you are finished. IT IS IMPORTANT! A tape measure will only get you close enough to drive to and alignment shop.

I love your idea of marking your brake rotor and a point on your vehicle frame to get a toe measurement, in addition to counting turns. When I replaced the tie rods on our 05 Ram 1500, the right tie rod was completely seized with rust, so much so I had to use a torch to get it off, thus counting turns didn’t really work here... but when we went to Les Schwab for a professional alignment, it was done in 20 min and the tech said the alignment was only slightly off! Thanks so much Eric!

Seeing the difference between 2014 and 2019 videos is great! Production and editing is a different level now but the instructions and commentary is still second to none.

Great vid and many thanks for posting your clear, detailed instructions. I took my Ram for an alignment, but the shop said they didn't want to do it because my outers were shot and the alignment would be pointless. Makes sense -also feels good to know the shop didn't just take my $ and send me on my way.Watched your vid and ordered some greasable tie rod ends. Seems pretty straightforward and DIY-able. $23 for a set of ends and a tube of anti-seize; can't beat that. Thanks again!

Just learned from this (all other vids just count thread spins) toe in = thread in. Toe out = thread out. Right?

I use a compass, you know the ones used for drawing circles.spread it out to the jam nut, stick the pointy end in the grease fitting and lock it.use it to measure the new one.Somewhat accurate....

If you happen to miss the hole for the cotter pin after tightening, continue until it lines up again. Don't ever back it off to line it up. It could wallow out the hole in the spindle causing noise, looseness, or play in the steering. In some cases the tie rod could break and then really bad thing happens...

So I got the nut loose, and rod out, but I can't unscrew it, it's twisting the whole tie rod in past the boot where i cant see because it's rusted, I've tried heat and lots of pb blaster, but I can find a good spot to grab the tie rod to stop it from twisting. Any tips? (Edit) after 4 heat soak, and pb cycles it's finally loose!

FYI for the DIY'ers out there- when changing all your own chassis and steering parts, tighten all your own nuts and bolts! Don't assume the guy at the alignment shop is going to check all of your work. We've had guys rebuild the entire front end of their cars (ball joints, tie rods, pitman and idler arms) and just run the castle nuts on finger tight and shove in a cotter pin! They said they assumed we needed it all loose to adjust the alignment. LOL

Changed the outer tie rods, control arms, and sway bar links on a Dodge Neon a couple weeks ago. Wish it was that easy. Stupid OE design outer tie rod ends are made with a thick sheet of metal folded into a cylinder and have a large gap in the metal on the bottom which allows salt and water to get in and corrode the threads. Pain to remove. Even more of a pain to install a cast tie rod end over the old threads. Should have recommended replacing the inners too.

Also, jam nuts were so tight on both sides that I had to push as hard as I could with my right leg on the end of my 22mm wrench to get them loose. No way I would have been able to get those loose using my arms.

Are you asking about the jam nut? It's all still righty tighty. Lefty loosey. The jam nut is screwed onto the inner tie rod first (right-tighty) and then the new outer tie rod end is screwed on (again...righty-tighty). The jam nut is then backed down (lefty-loosey) against the tie rod end and jams against the back-side of the outer tie rod. To break the jam nut loose in the beginning, the jam nut is run further up the inner tie-rod by righty-tighty (only by a thread or two but just enough that it's no longer "jammed" up against the back side of the tie rod end).
