I just wanted to say THANK you so much! We have been without a light in our bedroom for .. many months! the fan worked, and we resorted to closet lights and bathroom lights when it was necessary to add light to the room. We didn't want to pay someone to fix it, and knew we could, but, well I was intimidated. I watched a video way back then, when it broke, a different one, and it was thorough, but it kind of scared me. Yours was short, concise, to the point and exactly what I needed to feel more comfortable so I could try it. First thing I did was turn off the breaker, then unscrew everything so that I could see the switch (so I knew I would buy the right one). My fan had a blue wire and a black wire which threw me. I went to the hardware store, and the guy said that the blue and black meant they were both hot wires (they only had 2 black wire switches) he said it should work, so, I brought it home, positioned the switch the same as the old one tried to line up the wires just in case) turned on the power to test, and VOILA! to be honest, changing the switch for a newbie, it only took me about 5 minutes to get that done - it took longer to put the darn thing back together than it did to change the switch. for me - about 15 minutes or less total. This is long a long post, but I am just thrilled and had to say THANKS! I turned everything off and am waiting till my husband gets home so I can surprise him with the fix :) hurray!!

This looks good. I pulled the chain and the bloody thing came right out of the housing unit. Initially looked like the chain just separated, but upon further inspection, the little chain 'catch' in the unit broke. Tiny little plastic piece. So got to replace the whole switch. Fun times.

Very good information, however there is one thing that I never saw after watching several of these types of videos. I bought a 3 speed double capacitor fan switch at home depot. It went in real easy, and then when I turned on the fan it worked. However, the fan would not turn off, so I figured that it was faulty. Well when I got back to the store and was about to select the same switch, I notice that there was another switch of the same size but I noticed that it said single capacitor. I asked the guy who was in that department and he said more than likely, this would be the switch for your fan. Well he was right, and now it works like new. So be sure to know which capacitor your fan is set up for.

@funbro15 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are smelling, it is possible that it is dust that was shaken loose when the new switch was wired in. Run it for a bit then turn off the electric and take it back apart, feel around for anything that might be warm/hot. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.

love the video, but still confused since the hardware store has a three way pull chain switch and a pull chain switch. I bought the single pull chain switch, but not sure if it is correct. My fan works fine on all three speeds, but my 2 lights are blinking like Christmas tree lights. both are operated from a single wall switch. Thanks, if you're still monitoring this.
@funbro19 жыл бұрын
lulu Yep I'm still monitoring this :-) The hardware store will have several different types of switches available for fans, some are for the fan itself and some are for the light, your best bet is to take your old one in with you and match it up with a new one. Look for the number of wires coming out of the new one to match the old one, IF you can find someone in the store that knows anything about electric they should be able to assist you with a new switch. Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Is it okay to use a normal copper to copper wirenut on aluminum wire? It seems that's what he did on this video but I'm not sure.
@funbro14 жыл бұрын
In the video the wires are not aluminum but to answer your question, when going to aluminum wire you should use no-ox or an anti oxidant. Ideal makes a purple wire but that can be used to go from aluminum to copper. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

@@funbro1 oh okay I thought it was stranded aluminum? I have a ceiling fan chain I'm replacing it looked like aluminum wires to me so I wasn't sure if I could use wire connectors. Sorry I'm not an electrician.

I just turned the switch off for this one BUT always make sure that the power is OFF first. Thanks for the question, and Thanks for watching.
@ellesnyder9423 жыл бұрын
My problem was slightly different. I have the 4 light fan and it has a separate area above the fan that has a night light in it. The unit is attached to a wall switch. If the switch is on, you could operate the fan and lights by pull strings (one for the fan, one for the lights.) By pulling the string you could turn the main lights on or off as well as the night light. Separately. So for years now, if the wall switch was on so were the main lights. The pull string did nothing. The night light quit working altogether. So I still figured it was a pull chain switch issue but having just done the change, it didn't affect it at all. I didn't have to run the wire up to the top- just use the wire nut to where both ends were attached in the main area below. At least they still work with the wall switch.

+funbro1 but what if part of the chain is in the hole where you put the chain at?
@funbro19 жыл бұрын
As long as you can get a connector onto the remaining piece of chain and add additional chain you should be able to save the switch and time wiring a new one.

Could you have used the short wire that was cut off when you replace the switch instead of cutting the clip with the three black wires. Will that work. thanks. Great video.

Eugene Bedka Yeah that would also work fine. Good question. Thanks for watching.

How do I take the pull chain switch off mine doesn't just pull off
@funbro17 жыл бұрын
Look for a nut on the back side of the switch, inside. Different manufacturers have different ways of attaching the switches. Hope this helps.

The switch to turn my cooling fan on came off when i went to turn it on after a shower. Is replacing the cooling fan chain faster than the chain to turn on the light?
@funbro17 жыл бұрын
They are done about the same way and the location is close so I would say the time is very similar. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching

I have replaced ceiling switches on my ceiling fan before, and I looked at the wiring, but this time the light fixture fell on the bed, and of course all that is left hanging from the fan is a blue, white and a black wire. I hooked up the blue wire to the black on the new switch, and the white to the white coming from the fan, what do I do with the black wire coming from the fan? The lights work, but not the fan? Help
@funbro16 жыл бұрын
It sounds like it needs to go to the motor the way you describe it?
@hestheMaster6 жыл бұрын
White to white . Then the blue ( fan)and black(light) get connected together and go to one side of the switch. The black from the fan goes to the other side of the switch(hot always). The switch will turn both on or off then.

is this what i have to do if the chain is stuck? it won't move when i pull on it so the light wont' come one
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
It is a quick enough fix so I would go ahead and change out the pull chain switch, chances are it is bad.

Power off at the switch or the box?
@funbro16 жыл бұрын
You can start with just the switch but make sure to test it first. Thanks for watching.

Do you have to turn off all he power in home or just make sure light switch is off??
@funbro110 жыл бұрын
Well that depends on how comfortable you are with working with electric. I know people that would do this type of thing without turning the power off at all, but to play it safe it is always better to turn the switch off and do a test at the fan to make sure there is no power to it. It wouldn't hurt to turn the breaker off just in case someone enters the room and tries to flip the switch thinking they are going to give you more light but instead "light" you up. Best bet is to check the power at the fan before proceeding. Thanks.
