Replacing an Accord Wheel Bearing
Ok, here it is finally. A few of you have requested this procedure so here it is. As I said in the video I normally use a different method of removing the hub from the bearing assembly by using a slide hammer. I also normally use a press to reinstall the hub into the new bearing instead of hitting it with a hammer. Life is not perfect and we sometimes have to improvise as I did here. I know a few of you will ask about the size fasteners that I used to hammer the bearing out, I used hardened (8.8) 10x1.25 bolts to do the job. Ever had a problem with the bolts the four that go into the knuckle and bearing going in to far and not clearing brake disc stud bolts on Honda , use a washers had this happen

As a machinist, I have learned a very easy way to get the bearing race of any hub or axle with no damage to the hub or axle.. You run a bead of weld around the race, in the center of course.. The heat and weld will expand the race to the point of it just falling off.. Works every time.

My "special tool" when doing this job is a trailer hitch ball. I keep the nut on the trailer hitch bolt when separating the hub assembly/rotor from the bearing / knuckle. Then I take the nut off when driving the bearing back into the hub. Also, a standard Dremel grinding wheel (non-reinforced version) will cut through a stuck bearing race. The grinding wheel is just small enough that you can cut through without even grinding into the hub. Eric, thanks for starting this channel--it's awesome

Two incorrect wheel bearings later... Make sure that what you are buying is what you are getting. ABS wheel bearings have a magnetic side that the ABS sensor uses. A lot of wheel bearings 'look' right, but are not. To make sure you actually have ABS equipped wheel bearings prior to installation, dangle a paper clip near the either side of the wheel bearing. If the clip is magnetized, good for you (that is the side that faces the abs sensor). I, however, went through two sets of 'ABS wheel bearings' that did not have any magnetized sides and thus, the DREADED abs light on the dashboard. Needless to say, the company did not reimburse me for the installation (only replacement/refund) of two bad sets. So, the lesson, once again, is to make sure the parts you are installing match the parts you are removing. The pain of it all, is that all three sets 'look' the same (3rd set was right), only doing the magnetic test was I able to make sure the 3rd set was right. One wrong set came from amazon, and one bad set from Rockauto.

@97shobra Thanks for your comment I really appreciate it. Normally I slide hammer the hub out before I remove the knuckle from the car but in this case the car came in with a broken ball joint so that was not possible. Do it that way and you won't need the special tool. I hope to make another video showing this at some point.

They fixed it. On my 01 Accord the rotors go over the hub and are held in place by a couple of little Philips head screws so the rotor doesn't come off when you pull the wheel off. And I'm definitely in the "change the bearing and hub as an assembly" camp. Much less work that way, and I'm all about much less work. :D

I just changed my bearing a couple weeks ago on my '96 Accord. I replicated much of your previous vid, except I applied a generous amount of PB Blaster where the bearing meets the knuckle. I put in the sacraficial bolts to hammer out the bearing, but as I was clamping the knuckle down in the vise, the whole hub/bearing assembly fell out of the knuckle. Put in the new bearing/hub assembly and the ride is smooth as butter now. Thanks for the tips Eric!

Thanks Eric! I wish I would have seen your video before I began replacing a broken lug nut stud on my 1990 Honda Accord! Because when doing that I realized my rotors needed to be replaced. I did not know the rotor was "captive"! After destroying the ball joints, using a pickle fork, I googled and found your video and got through the project of replacing the rotor and hub bearing while I was that far. Home Depot had the M10x1.25 80 MM lag bolts and your special tool XD45 is actually a follower bolt for a mechanical joint for assembling Ductile iron pipe (used for water lines. Now to replace passenger side! Thanks again!

Literally pulled this video up in while i was in the junkyard. I found an Accord that had a steering knuckle with a brand new lower ball joint already installed. Had to strip it down so I didn't spend too much since all I needed was the knuckle with the joint. taking the hub out worked like a charm on the spot.

@Oozingmachismo24 The only reason I took the knuckle off for this was because I was also replacing the ball joint, mostly I do this while it's still in the car. Those complete assemblies are much easier to deal with but your still faced with getting the old one out which in my opinion is the hardest part. Thanks for your comment.

Eric, with the help of this video, I was able to replace both front wheel bearings on my 98 accord 6 cyl. although i must say, the local honda shop was more than happy to use their machine to press out old bearing and push in new for 50 bucks, which I felt was worth it for the saving of hassle and stress. Total job cost = 80 bucks. Done. Thanks!!!

Another fine "how to" from Eric. Thanks. Did this same job on my Rover 620ti ( English Accord variant from the Honda-Rover partnership from way back ) some years ago for the first time. Was disappointed to see that inner race left on the hub. Thought about it and used the same method to cut and chisel the inner race away. Worked a treat. That Honda Hub over Disc/Rotor design means a lot more work than Brake Disc/Rotor over Hub used on most other Rovers and MGs.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, the process is similar. The differences are that the bearing is pressed into the knuckle and is held in place by a large snap ring. Also as I said in the description it's a good idea to slide hammer out the hub assembly with the knuckle still on the car before you remove it, I couldn't on this one because the ball joint was broken. Other than that it's pretty much the same, just make sure you get the bearing back in correctly, the rubber side goes toward the hub.

I'm not always the most inventive with tools. Your demonstration of the cut-off blade then chisel will help a lot when I fix Mom's Civic this week. I paid $55 each side for bearing press work on my Contour. No question the shop earned their money, but keeping that $110 would have been nice. Thanks!

Thanks for showing me how to keep my old Honda on the road! I've successfully used your videos for several different repairs. Interesting the way you pulled this bearing. I've done it with a bearing puller and used a torch to cut that annoying race. Then pressed the new bearing in place (with a press). Your method makes it possible for the "average Joe". The Honda front end Is a little trickier than the Ole American muscle im use to working on, your video's made my day of the lady 94 accord front end rebuild much much easier than i had originally anticipated especially that damn wheel bearing hub assembly! I used a vice and a piece of 1x1 wood for the bearing side to press it on to the hub assembly the majority of the way and then hammered it down the remaining length of the hub. A little different, but it worked, YOU THE MAN!

Eric thanks for what you do --- your vids on the accord wheel bearing replacement enabled me to be able to do this myself even down to cuttiing the race off the hub and grinding the rotor to get it back on---the most trouble was pressing the hub into the new bearing without a press. I used some 3/4 treaded rod with nuts and washers on both sides and got it to within 1/16" before the rod broke ====the sledgeamatic got it seated . I used some wood under it to protect the bearing ---thanks again

@phobia1961 I actually remove the hub before removing the knuckle with a slide hammer while the lower ball joint is still connected normally but this car came in with a broken lower ball joint and that was not possible, I hope to make an amended video to cover this part of the procedure in the future. I think the ball joint should have had a snap ring on it, if the new one came with a snap ring it would have been a good idea to install it. Thanks for your comment and update.

@michaelovitch No, I don't always use impact sockets with my impact wrench, I should but I don't. In this case I used the chrome socket for 2 reasons, first, I didn't have a 12pt socket that was an impact socket and second the socket that I was using has a lifetime warranty so if it breaks I can get a new one. I love your techniques. I'm all about the BFH method! I did the same job years ago and I seem to remember using the axle and axle nut to press the hub back onto the bearing. I didnt know about the notch trick to get the old race off. I gave the whole knuckle to a shop to press it off. Gotta do another one soon on my Saab, so this video was a key refresher course!

Thanks for helping me out with this video.I had to replace a toyota sienna front wheel bearing and it was pretty similar. it was a press in style with no bolts to hold it in. I had to use a press to press it in.I would have never figured out how to get the bearing race off of the hub if I hadnt seen your little trick with the cut off wheel and chisle. You're video on this was EXTREMELY helpful! It inspired me to fix my '94 Honda Accord LX. It is a great guide. I even found my own XD45. You should patent that. My whole suspension was gone and I went further in replacing my upper and lower ball joint assembly, rotors, break pads, etc. It was a dirty job but I loved it and had the satisfaction of doing it myself. I've changed wheel bearings before but usually scrap the flange when the bearing race is stuck on it. Had it off in two minutes with your saw in and crack it trick. Thanks for the great videos!

To answer your question the slide hammer will not harm the ball joints, the suspension suffers way more abuse just driving over a bumpy road. At least I've never seen it be a problem. Hey eric this video helped me immensely! I couldnt figure out how to get the bearing off of the assembly without damaging the hub too badly in the process. The design on this car's brake and wheel assembly creates a potential for the owner to get stuck paying a shop a lot of money.

@tmackinator No worries. Yea, my grandfather used to do stuff like that, i just wish I had the time to play like that these days but that does sound like a great project. Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate them.

@tmackinator I agree on the press part, in fact I hope to get one and show it's operation but the heating I don't agree with as you will temper the metal of the hub and in my opinion takes a lot more effort. I do appreciate your input however and like you said, six of one and half a dozen of the other.

@EricTheCarGuy You are not confrontational at all. I liked the discussions. Seems I came off bad which was not my intention. Your vids are great. I installed two new axle shafts in the GF's 97 accord this past weekend and we were discussing just how good your vids were in showing a step by step and why you were doing it the way you were doing it. Thanks for the replies, the discussions were fun. BTW, I made my own shop press, possibly a guy of your skill level would find that a good project!

I've worked with guys that were too lazy to walk to the press in the shop and hammered all their bearing jobs in and out. The only difference with the Civic set up is that you have to press/hammer the bearing out of the knuckle. Make sure you remove the snap ring first.
